4. If a baby is born with simple syndactyly how would it affect them?

5. How many sides does a heptadecagon have?

Answer: 17

A heptadecagon has seventeen sides and its name, like that of most other polygons, is based on ancient Greek words for numbers. It is composed of 'hept' meaning 'seven' as in heptagon, a polygon with seven sides, and 'decagon', the name for a polygon with ten sides. The names of many polygons with large numbers of sides are made up of two separate components in a similar way. A six-sided polygon is called a hexagon while a nonagon or enneagon has nine sides and a hectogon has a hundred sides.

6. The wood of which highly poisonous coniferous tree was traditionally used to make longbows?

Answer: yew

The European yew (Taxus baccata) is an Old World native belonging to the Taxaceae family of the Pinophyta division of plants, commonly known as conifers. While "baccata" (bearing berries) refers to the tree's bright red, berry-like arils (seed-bearing structures), the genus name "Taxus" is very probably derived from the Scythian word for "bow".

Indeed, yew wood's remarkable elasticity makes it ideal for the manufacturing of bows, especially the famed English longbows used with great effect in the Middle Ages. Due to its fine grain and smooth texture, yew wood (one of the hardest softwoods) is also extensively used in the making of furniture and musical instruments.

These medium-sized trees, with their strikingly arranged dark green leaves, are also popular in landscaping and ornamental horticulture. All parts of a yew tree, with the exception of the edible arils, contain alkaloids known as taxines, which are toxic to humans and some animals, such as horses and cattle. All the other trees are also conifers.

7. In statistics and computing which of these is NOT a kind of average?

Answer: Maximum

An average is a value that typically represents a set of numbers. Usually we think of the total of all the numbers divided by the amount of numbers, which is the mean. The mode is the most commonly occurring number in a set. It is useful when a lot of the numbers in the set are the same.

The median is the number closest to the middle when all the numbers are listed in order. This is useful when one number is extremely different to most, like much larger or much smaller, which can result in the mean not really being a good representative of the set.

8. Albert Einstein is perhaps most famous for the equation E = mc[squared]. Most people know that E is energy and m is mass, but c represents...

Answer: the speed of light in a vacuum.

Einstein wasn't the first to find a relationship between mass and energy, but he was the first to actually write it down as a formula. He beat out Poincare who had come up with a similar relation the same year Einstein proposed his formula.

9. The Rafflesia arnoldii is the world's largest example of what type of organism?

Answer: Flower

There are over twenty species of Rafflesia in southeastern Asia, the smallest of which has a flower only extending about 12cm (5in) across. Its bigger cousin, Rafflesia arnoldii, produces a flower about one metre in diameter which can tip the scales at 11kg (25lb).

It has five huge petals, but the flower only lasts a few days, making the plant difficult to spot in the rainforest. You might find one by the smell though. One of its nicknames is the "carrion flower" due to the delightful aroma of rotting flesh emanating from it.

10. Commanded by Walter M. Schirra, what was the first successful manned Apollo mission?

Answer: Apollo 7

In 1967, the crew of AS-204, Command Pilot Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Senior Pilot Edward H. White and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee, were killed on the launch pad in a cabin fire during testing. NASA later renamed the flight Apollo 1, chosen by that crew. Apollo 4 first tested the Saturn V rocket which powered astronauts to the moon. Apollo 7, the first manned mission in the Apollo program, crewed by Command Module Pilot Donn F. Eisele, and Lunar Module Pilot R. Walter Cunningham under "Wally" Schirra, tested the redesigned Apollo Command/Service Module. "We Have Cleared the Tower", an episode of the television miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon", paid tribute in its title to the crew of Apollo 1 which never left the ground.
