Oh come let's Ohio's praise
And songs to Alma raise
While our rebounding thrill
With joy which death alone can still
Summer's heat or winter's cold
The seasons pass the years will roll
Time and change will surely show
How firm thy Ohio.
These days of priceless worth
By far the days on earth
Soon will pass and we not know
How dearly we Ohio
We should strive to keep thy name
Of fair repute and spotless fame
So in college halls we'll grow
And love thee better Ohio.
Though age may dim our mem'ry's store
We'll think of happy days of
True to friend and frank to foe
As sturdy sons of
If on seas of care we roll
Neath blackened sky or barren shoal
Thoughts of thee bid darkness go
Dear Mater Ohio.
The song "Carmen Ohio" is the oldest song sung at Ohio State University. It was penned by Fred Cornell, an Ohio State freshman, in 1902. There is some speculation on the origin of Cornell's writing the song. Some of the stories say that Cornell wrote it after watching Ohio State lose spectacularly to Michigan that year. After watching the Buckeyes lose 86-0, it is said that Cornell penned the song to emphasize devotion to Ohio State, no matter what may come. The more reliable records of "Carmen Ohio" indicate the song was written by Cornell during his time with the Glee Club.
The Glee Club performed the song the following year in 1903, and it became Ohio State's Alma Mater in 1916. The Ohio State Buckeyes football team began singing it with fans and the Ohio State Marching Band in 2001. Head coach Jim Tressel required that his players join together in singing "Carmen Ohio" after every game, no matter the outcome. It was meant to instill a greater appreciation and respect for the history of Ohio State. It has been an Ohio State tradition ever since.
