Early in the third quarter, Illinois finally broke through the Ohio State defense and scored a red zone touchdown. Ohio State was able to defend the red zone in six straight games to start the season, a single season record for the Buckeyes. Ohio State would go on to win the game 34-16 preserving their undefeated season.

Following the Tattoogate scandal that saw Ohio State fire their head coach and vacate wins, Luke Fickell was named as interim head coach for the 2011 season. Ohio State went 6-7 in 2011 (losing to the Florida Gators in the Gator bowl). This was the first time since 1966 that Ohio State finished the season with a losing record.

The Buckeyes were heavily favored in this first round matchup and they struggled out of the gate. Miami had a great gameplan that focused on wearing down the Ohio State defensive line. Late in the game, Ohio State couldn't keep up with the speed of Miami's players thus ending the season for the Buckeyes.
