Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We start off the season in Columbus with the air crisp and clear for this evening's highly anticipated matchup between the Buckeyes and this no.1 ranked team. Who was the team that the Buckeyes defeated?

Answer: Texas Longhorns

Saturday evening on August 30th, 2025, the Buckeyes took down the number 1 ranked Texas Longhorns in a thriller with a final score of 14-7. This highly anticipated matchup was a top 5 matchup as Ohio State was ranked number 3 going into the game. This victory also set a record for the Buckeyes as this game was their fifth victory in a row over top 10 ranked teams.
2. After taking down the number 1 ranked team in the country in their first game, Ohio State's next game was a very easy game and a much-needed breather. Grambling State came to Columbus and soundly lost to the Buckeyes by a score of 70-0. What state did Grambling come from?

Answer: Louisiana

Easy games like this are known as buy games because the larger school often pays to play the smaller school. The larger school will buy the win so to speak, and the smaller school gets national television and media coverage... along with a lot of money. Grambling State is a very small historically black college from the State of Louisiana and they are known for their marching band.
3. The Buckeyes go on the road for the first time, to the great state of Washington. Ohio State defeated the Washington Huskies by a final score of 24-6 in the first conference game of the season. In which conference do the Buckeyes and the Huskies compete in?

Answer: Big Ten Conference

This game was the first road game for the Buckeyes this season. Ohio State continued their stellar defense and kept Washington from scoring over 10 points the entire game. This was the fourth straight game in which the Buckeye defense didn't allow the other team to score more than 10.
4. Welcome to the fifth week of the season! The Buckeyes take on the Golden Gophers from Minnesota, and it has become apparent to all that the Buckeye defense is top notch as their defense has yet to give up a red zone touchdown. While Ohio state racked up 42 points, how may points did the Buckeyes hold Minnesota to in their blowout win?

Answer: 3

Ohio State set a new seasonal record as they had gone 5 straight games now without giving up a red zone touchdown. They held all 5 of their opponents so far to under 10 points. The Buckeyes are now ranked number 1 in the country in defense and overall, after their win against Minnesota.

The defense only allowed 162 total yards and held Minnesota to an awful stat of 1-11 on third down conversions.
5. In the sixth game of the season, this team was the first one to score a red zone touchdown against the stout Ohio State defense. Who was this team?

Answer: Illinois Fighting Illini

Early in the third quarter, Illinois finally broke through the Ohio State defense and scored a red zone touchdown. Ohio State was able to defend the red zone in six straight games to start the season, a single season record for the Buckeyes. Ohio State would go on to win the game 34-16 preserving their undefeated season.
6. Ohio State plays the Wisconsin Badgers. This head coach for the Badgers was also an interim head coach for Ohio State in 2011. Who was this man?

Answer: Luke Fickell

Following the Tattoogate scandal that saw Ohio State fire their head coach and vacate wins, Luke Fickell was named as interim head coach for the 2011 season. Ohio State went 6-7 in 2011 (losing to the Florida Gators in the Gator bowl). This was the first time since 1966 that Ohio State finished the season with a losing record.
7. After knocking off Wisconsin, the Buckeyes returned home to host one of their close-to-home rivals: Penn State. Did Ohio State need overtime to win this tough matchup?

Answer: No

Although the game only saw Ohio State leading 17-14 at halftime, Ohio State pulled away in the second half to win with a final score of 38-14. The last time Ohio State lost to Penn State was in 2016 off a blocked field goal that was returned for a Penn State touchdown. Ohio State now led the all-time series 26-14.
8. The Buckeyes 11th game saw them go up against a team that participated in the very first U.S. college football game ever played. Who was this team?

Answer: Rutgers Scarlet Knights

In 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played against each other in the very first college football game in the United States. Rutgers defeated Princeton with a final score of 6-4. Many rules were different back then (such as no throwing of the ball was allowed).

The sport of American football has evolved to introduce many different styles of play, throwing, tackling, and kicking to make the sport what it is today.
9. The regular season finale is here! This much hated team by the Ohio State Buckeyes is the last team to stand in the way of an undefeated regular season for the Buckeyes. Who is this hated rival and what is the nickname for this matchup that is played every year.

Answer: Michigan Wolverines "The Game"

Ohio State defeated the Wolverines by a final score of 27-9. This win for the Buckeyes broke a 4-game losing streak to "That Team Up North". It is tradition in the city of Columbus to never say the "M Word" (Michigan) during the week of the game. Ohio state also crosses out every M on the campus for this week. Michigan held the overall record 62-52-6.

They had played every single year since the 1897 season. Only once did they not play and that was the 2020 season due to Covid-19.
10. Ohio State was selected as the Number 2 overall team heading into the Playoffs. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes suffered defeat by the hands of this team from Florida. Who defeated the Buckeyes by a score of 24-14 and getting revenge for a 2002 championship loss to Ohio State?

Answer: Miami Hurricanes

The Buckeyes were heavily favored in this first round matchup and they struggled out of the gate. Miami had a great gameplan that focused on wearing down the Ohio State defensive line. Late in the game, Ohio State couldn't keep up with the speed of Miami's players thus ending the season for the Buckeyes.
