Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Argentina played Algeria in the opening match of Group J at Kansas City Stadium. In a crazy opening, both sides had goals disallowed for offside. Lionel Messi scored the tournament's first hat-trick in the game. What was the final score?

Answer: 3-0

Messi scored with a great curling shot in the 17th minute, and in the second half pounced on a spilled shot from the Fennec Foxes' keeper Zidane (no, not THAT Zidane!), this one is named Luca. He completed the hat-trick with a drive into the corner from the edge of the area in the 76th minute. And it was Messi whose goal was disallowed in the first ten minutes. Those three goals took Messi to 16 goals, equal with Germany's Miroslav Klose's record of 16 goals in World Cup finals tournaments.
2. In Group J's second match, Austria faced WC finals newcomers Jordan at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Austria prevailed 3-1. At this point of the tournament, what was notable about Marko Arnautovic's penalty goal?

Answer: It was the latest goal in a game

Arnautovic's penalty was recorded as being scored at 90 + 12 minutes, being the latest goal to this stage of the tournament. Austria had not been in the Finals for 28 years; Jordan had never been there. Jordan may have lost but their first goal at a World Cup finals tournament was something special. Ali Olwan carried the ball forward, broke inside into the penalty area and bent a perfectly placed shot home into the corner of the net.

Regarding "The kick the was re-taken after Arnautovic accidentally double-kicked it and scored": This did not happen, but if it had, that's was the correct course of action for the officials to take. Prior to July 2015, the ruling would have been an indirect free kick to the defending team from the penalty spot. The key word is 'accidentally' - if a player is deemed to have deliberately double kicked, then the free-kick ruling would still apply.
3. Matchday two for Austria and Argentina in Dallas TX. Both countries went there off the back of a win, so a win for either in this match would see them through to the Round of 32. Lionel Messi started this match on 16 goals, level with Germany's Miroslav Klose for goals scored in World Cup finals tournaments. Did he break the record in this match?

Answer: Yes

Well, he didn't have to wait long for a chance! In the 6th minute of the match, Lissaqndro Martinez appeared to be fouled in the area by simultaneous tackles, but the referee waved play on. After a VAR check, a penalty was awarded. Messi stepped up and missed; he put it wide of the post. Then, in the 19th minute, Messi was played through, but his effort was saved by the foot of the Austrian keeper, Alexander Schlager. The 39th minute of the match was when it finally happened. Facundo Medina cut the ball back in from the left, and Messi was waiting near the penalty spot to side foot the ball home, to set a new record at 17 goals.

In the 55th minute, Sabitzer had a direct free kick saved at full length by a diving Emiliano Martinez. After 67 minutes, Michael Gregoritsch put a header over the bar under pressure from the defence. More half chances followed at both ends without result. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time Alexander Prass put a header just wide of the post. Straight after, Argentina made their way to the other end and after a series of blocked shots, Messi finally claimed his second for the match. 2-0 to Argentina at full time. A place in the Round of 32 was theirs.

Messi's goal made him both the youngest and the oldest scorer for Argentina in World Cup finals tournaments. After this match, he was the leading scorer in the competition and had scored all his country's goals. Messi joined France's Just Fontaine (1958) and Brazil's Jairzinho (1970) as the only players to score in six consecutive World Cup matches (be it across multiple World Cup tournaments or at a single tournament).
4. Jordan against Algeria for Matchday 2 at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Both countries lost their opening matches, so a win here would be highly desirable. What was the final score?

Answer: 2-1 Algeria

In the first minute, Jordan's Nizar Alrashdan had a free header which he put well wide. In the 3rd minute, Algeria's Amine Gouiri shot into the side netting. In the 12th minute, Jordan's Mousa Altamari had a shot saved. In the 21st minute, Algeria's Fares Chaibi had a shot blocked. After 23 minutes, Jordan's Ali Olwan had a long range shot saved. In the 29th minute, Gouiri had another shot saved. If this all sounds a bit repetitive, it was. None of these attempts on goal had any quality to them.

In the 33rd minute Algeria's Riyad Mahrez was sent though on goal, but the Jordanian keeper Yazeed Abulaila made a fine block as he advanced. In the 34th minute, Algeria's Rayan Ait-Nouri went down in the area after a challenge by Abdallah Nasib. The referee waved play on. In the 36th minute, the game got the goal it desperately needed. Jordan's Alrashdan scored with the outside of the foot following a defensive giveaway by Algeria. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time the commentator inadvertently made the faux pas of referring to Jordan's first match against Austria as having been against Australia. Being mistaken for Austria has been a running joke in Australia for many years. Half time, Jordan were ahead 1-0.

In the 61st minute, a header from Algeria's Nadhir Benbouali was well saved by Yazeed Abulaila. In the 69th minute Benbouali did better with his next headed attempt, rising to meet a corner and scoring into the far corner. The score is now 1-1. In the 82nd minute, Algeria scored form a corner when Gouiri poked the ball home. 2-1 to Algeria. There were more chances for each side but no further scoring. So, with that result, Algeria live on but Jordan's World Cup dream will end after their next match against Austria.

Jordan's opening goal represented the first time they had ever taken the lead in a World Cup finals game. Conversely, it was the first time that Algeria had won a World Cup finals game after conceding the opening goal. Algeria had only kept one clean sheet in fifteen WC finals appearances, against England in 2010 (0-0).
5. The last match in Group J saw Argentina play Jordan in Dallas TX. Can Jordan restore some lost pride before they leave the tournament - Did Jordan score in this match?

Answer: Yes

In the 7th minute Giovani Lo Celso was played through into the area and finished neatly, but the flag was up for offside. In the 19th minute Lo Celso placed a direct free kick around the wall and into the far corner. In the 27th minute Nicolas Tagliafico delivered a low cross which Lautaro Martinez got a foot to, but his shot hit the bar. From the rebound Julian Alvarez's diving header was pushed over the top in a brilliant reflex save from the Jordanian keeper Yazeed Abulaila. When diving, Alvarez was simultaneously caught in the face by a boot belonging to Nizar Alrashdan. The referee was advised by VAR to go to the pitchside monitor to consider further sanction. The final decision was a penalty. By the time the penalty was taken we were in the 31st minute. Martinez drilled the ball past Abulaila into the bottom left corner. 2-0 to Argentina. In the 38th minute a cross from Odeh Fakhoury sailed across the area. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time Nicolas Otamendi's header from a free kick shaved the far post with Abulaila rooted to his spot. He was called offside. In the 5th minute of stoppage time Alvarez's shot was saved by Abulaila. Half time, 2-0 to Argentina.

In the 48th minute Lo Celso had the ball in the net again but Martinez was ruled offside in the lead up play. In the 51st minute a lovely squared ball from Ali Olwan was wasted when Mousa Altamari blazed over the bar from the edge of the area. In the 53rd minute Martinez's long range shot skimmed the bar. In the 55th minute, a well constructed passing movement for Jordan resulted in Ehsan Haddad crossing low across the area and Altamari sliding the ball home past the Argentine keeper Emiliano Martinez. 2-1 to Argentina. In the 64th minute, Yazan Alarab brought down Alexis MacAllister outside the area. The free kick from Messi went over the top. In the 79th minute Messi was brought down by Amer jamous outside the area. The free kick was dispatched through the wall by Messi and Abulaila did not move. 3-1 to Argentina. That was the final score.

After this match, Argentina were top of Group J; and along with Austria, who drew 3-3 with Algeria, both teams progressed to the Round of 32. Algeria finished third on goal difference but were assured of being one of the eight- best third-placed teams. Jordan was eliminated.
6. Austria and Algeria met in Kansas City on the last day in Group J, Matchday 3. A draw would guarantee Austria second place; because of an inferior goal difference Algeria needed to win, although a draw would still earn them a place as one of the best-eight third-placed teams. What was the score in this match at the end of regulation time, 90 minutes, before any time added-on?

Answer: 2-2

In the 8th minute Xaver Schlager blazed over the bar. In the 10th minute Ibrahim Maza brought the ball down outside the penalty area and smashed his volley way off target. 25 minutes gone, nothing much is happening goalmouth-wise in this match, a lot of midfield action. After 27 minutes Marko Arnautovic was sent through on goal, and he got the smallest of touches with his boot to touch it past the keeper. 1-0 to Austria. In the 29th minute Arnautovic was played through again, he put his shot wide but was offside anyway. In the 36th minute Maza jinked his way through the area, but his shot was into the side netting. In the 39th minute Fares Chaibi made space and shot from the edge of the area, his shot hit the post and rebounded back into play. In the 44th minute, when Riyad Mahrez was rugby tackled at the corner flag, the referee played advantage as the ball had broken free to Rafik Belghali. Belghali then jinked his way past three defenders and beat the Austrian keeper Alexander Schlager with a rising shot at the near post. Score was now 1-1. In the 2nd minute of stoppage time Nicolas Sieweld had a shot in the area that was blocked. Half time, score was 1-1.

In the 54th minute Chaibi shot from outside the area but his effort was easily saved by Schlager. In the 55th minute came one of the goals of the tournament. Konrad Laimer was sent flying down the right wing, and his first time low drilled cross was met with a first time bullet of a shot by Marcel Sabitzer from the edge of the area which flew past Oussama Benbot. Score is now 2-1 to Austria. In the 60th minute Algeria equalised when Mahrez got onto the end of a low drilled cross from Houssem Aouar. Score is now 2-2. In the 65th minute Seiweld tried a long range effort from outside the area which went just wide. The score at the end of regulation time was 2-2.

In the 3rd minute of second half stoppage time, a through ball in the area to Mahrez saw him slot it across Schlager into the far corner. 3-2 to Algeria. In the last minute of stoppage time of 4 minutes, Philipp Leinhart put the ball over from inside of the area. Just over one minute past the end of the four minutes of stoppage time, a cross from the left hand touch line sailed to the far post, where it was brilliantly headed back across goal by Austrian Michael Gregoritsch, where it was then headed in by Sasa Kalajdzic. The score was now 3-3 and Austria's great escape was complete because, a few seconds beforehand, they were heading home. Full time score was 3-3.

As a result of this match, Austria came second on goal difference and with Argentina who topped the group, progressed to the Round of 32. Algeria finished third on goal difference but were assured of being one of the eight-best third-placed teams. Jordan was eliminated.

Prior to this match, Austria had conceded at least one goal in their last eleven World Cup finals matches, the longest stretch of any country. The run continued: now it's their last twelve matches.
7. Which country finished last in Group J?

Answer: Jordan

Jordan last? This is where most pundits would have placed them. Argentina on top, no surprise there, the other two were always likely to be a lottery.
8. Which player scored the most goals in Group J?

Answer: Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Lionel Messi - where do we start? On Matchday 1, of course. He notched the tournament's first hat trick against Algeria on Matchday 1. He followed up with two goals against Austria in the second match. At this stage he had scored five, which were all of his country's goals to that point. In the third match, he also got one against Jordan, to make it six in total. A standout leader after the group stage.
There was one own goal scored in the group. Jordan's Yazan Al-Arab put one into his own net against Austria.
9. Which country had scored the most goals in Group J?

Answer: Argentina

Group winners Argentina scored eight, Algeria six and Austria five (each helped by their 3-3 draw); and Jordan got in on the act with three.
10. Which country had conceded the most goals in Group J?

Answer: Jordan

Last placed Jordan conceded eight, closely followed by Algeria with seven and Austria with six - those totals not being helped by their 3-3 draw. Group winners Argentina let in a solitary goal.
