Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Group K's first match in Houston TX featured Portugal against DR Congo. Portugal would feel they had always under-achieved in World Cup tournaments. DR Congo certainly had. Could either country put that right today? Portugal scored after five minutes. What happened by the end?

Answer: 1-1 draw

Joao Neves opened the scoring very early for Portugal with a sharp header. This looked like the early inevitable opening of the floodgates, but it was not to be. The Leopards of Congo equalised just before half time with a similarly sharp header, this time from Yoane Wissa. They have come a long way from 1974 - read further below.

As for Portugal: "Houston, we have a problem" (yes, I know, that wasn't the exact statement). If I were a Portuguese supporter, I would've been REALLY ticked off. They scored in the fifth minute and seemed to immediately settle into the mindset that more goals would only be a matter of time. And they didn't appear. Congo equalised. Still, that didn't kick Portugal into action. Did they learn nothing from watching Cabo Verde? Nothing from Egypt? In the end, Congo could very well have stolen the match, they were just as good as their opponents.

DR Congo were appearing at their first finals since 1974, when they were known as Zaire. Zaire's record does not make for good reading, they lost 2-0 to Scotland, 9-0 to Yugoslavia and 3-0 to Brazil.
At 41 years and 132 days, Cristiano Ronaldo, who was playing in his sixth World Cup finals, became the oldest outfield player to participate in a World Cup finals match.
2. In the last game of the first round of matches in Group K, Colombia squared off against WC finals debutants Uzbekistan in Mexico City. Colombia won 3-1. Who scored Uzbekistan's historic first goal in a World Cup finals match?

Answer: Abbosbek Fayzullaev

With the knowledge that in the Group's earlier match, Portugal had only drawn, Colombia would have been further incentivised to get maximum points. Uzbekistan did not make it easy for them, and only a header from Jaminton Campaz in the ninth minute of stoppage time sealed the game. Prior to that, the Uzbeks had pushed them all the way.

After Campaz's goal, Uzbekistan's 18 year-old defender Behruzjon Karimov still found time to hit the underside of the crossbar from 25 metres with what surely would have been the goal of the tournament to that point.
3. Portugal faced Uzbekistan in their group's Matchday 2 in Houston TX. Both countries failed to win their opening matches, so a win here was vital. Portugal won 5-0. Did Cristiano Ronaldo score a hat trick?

Answer: No

In the 3rd minute Bruno Fernandez's turn and shot for Portugal was deflected over. Two minutes later, Cristianao Ronaldo just failed to connect with a great cross and the chance was gone. One minute later again, Ronaldo executed a sharp shot on the turn when he met a cross first time to put Portugal up 1-0. At the 17 minute mark, Bruno Mendes shot a direct free kick low into the far corner to make the score 2-0. At this point of the game the White Wolves of Uzbekistan seemed to have no answer at all to the onslaught they were facing.

However, in the 29th minute (what would have been) one of the goals of the tournament was scored by Azizjon Ganiev when he drilled an unstoppable shot into the top corner from outside the area. Except VAR correctly determined that there was a foul in the lead-up play, and the goal was disallowed. In the 39th minute Ronaldo was played through by Fernandez on the right and shot into the far corner for 3-0. In the last minute of stoppage time Ronaldo looked odds on the grab his hat trick, but his attempted flick over the keeper did not come off. Half time: 3-0 to Portugal.

Just after the second half started, Joao Felix stole the ball outside the area and shot narrowly over the bar. In the 52nd minute Abbosbek Fayzullaev broke down the left, cut inside the area and shot, but straight at Portugal's keeper Diogo Costa. Three minutes later Otabek Shukurov had a shot from a more central position, but it was deflected wide. In the 58th minute Ronaldo's clever run through to meet a 'dinked' free kick over the wall was blocked by keeper Abduvohid Nematov. From the resulting corner, an untidy scramble resulted in an own goal score by Abdukodir Khusanov. After 74 minutes Ronaldo spun and turned in the area but the keeper blocked his first time shot. Eldor Shomurodov shot over with a half volley from the edge of the area. In the 84th minute Fernandez's drive was saved by the keeper.

In the 78th minute the score went to 5-0 when Rafa Leao got on the end of a cross from Nelson Semedo to place his shot into the top corner. In the last minute of stoppage time Ronaldo had one last chance to seal his hat trick but his tired stretch to meet a low driven cross just came up short. End result, 5-0 to Portugal.

Ronaldo's opening goal meant he became the first player to score in six different World Cup Finals tournaments. It also meant he became the second oldest player behind Cameroon's Roger Milla to score at a WC finals tournament. His second goal meant he had overtaken the legendary Eusebio to become Portugal's leading scorer at World Cup finals tournaments.
4. Colombia and DR Congo were the opponents in this group game in Guadalajara, Mexico. A win to Colombia would see them at the top of the group. Who scored the winning goal in this game?

Answer: Daniel Munoz (Colombia)

In the very first minute, DR Congo's Edo Kayembe hit a thunderbolt just wide from outside the area. In the 4th minute, Colombia's Daniel Munoz missed a semi-open goal after Congo's keeper, Lionel Mpasi, had parried a Jhon Arias shot into his path. Then in the 6th minute, Munoz's diving header was brilliantly saved by Mpasi, but the ball was parried upwards and Munoz got to it first to put it into the net. However, it was not to be, as the VAR proved Munoz had been offside by a shoulder. In the 11th minute, James Rodriguez's shot from outside the area was saved at full length by Mpasi. From the resulting corner Jhon Lucumi put his header over the bar. in the 14th minute James was again foiled from range by Mpasi. In the 16th minute, Luis Diaz's shot was saved by that man Mpasi again. Mpasi was having an inspired match and the game was only 16 minutes old!

In the 19th minute Mpasi was at it again with a full length dive to deny Gustavo Puerta from outside the area. In the 42nd minute Congo's Axel Tuanzebe just failed to get his head onto a cross. The rain was pelting down as half time arrived, 0-0. DR Congo had their keeper well and truly to thank for that scoreline. In the 50th minute Mpasi saved at close range from Diaz, and the rebound was shot wide by Arias. In the 74th minute Congo's Yoane Wissa had a shot blocked. In the 76th minute, Colombia finally scored. Munoz's shot went in at the near post but it took a huge deflection off Steve Kapuadi on the way. Mpasi had been beaten at last. 1-0 to Colombia. In the 79th minute Diaz was put through the centre and calmly chipped Mpasi, however the effort was disallowed for a foul in the build up. In the 71st minute, Diaz cut inside and scored but it also was disallowed as he was clearly offside when he received the ball. In the 86th minute, Puerta's shot was deflected over the bar. From the resulting corner, Puerta had another shot, this time from long range, which was smartly saved by Mpasi.

In the 91st minute, a long range shot from DR Congo's Nathanael Mbuku was pushed away by Camilo Vargas. From the corner that followed, Chancel Mbemba's header was saved. With one minute of stoppage time remaining, Wissa tried a 35 metre direct free kick which gave away possession away. Being only one goal up, I wonder how his coach felt about that? No harm done in the end, the full time whistle was blown, Colombia won 1-0. Colombia's second win from two games meant they progressed; and qualified for the Round of 32.
5. Portugal and Colombia battled it out in their final group stage match in Miami, Florida. Colombia needed a win or a draw to cement top spot; Portugal had to win. What was the final score?

Answer: 0-0 draw

Within one minute of kick off, Colombia attacked down the left, Luis Diaz's shot was blocked, and the rebound bounced up for Jhon Cordoba whose reflex header went just over. In the 7th minute Bruno Frenandez's cross for Portugal was just too high for Pedro Neto at the far post. In the 8th minute a James Rodriguez (Colombia) cross fizzed through the area and out. In the 17th minute Cordoba's fierce strike was well saved by the Portuguese keeper Diogo Costa, the rebound was recycled but eventually went behind for a corner. In the 22nd minute a shot by Jhon Arias was cleared off the line by Portugal's Ruben Neves.

After 23 minutes, Cristino Ronaldo's free kick from distance was easily gathered by the Colombian keeper Camilo Vargas. In the 38th minute a Luis Diaz (Colombia) cross was overhit. At the other end Joao Cancelo overhit his cross. In the 39th minute Fernandez' shot was saved by Vargas, and Ronaldo's overhead kick was blocked. In the 40th minute a long range thunderbolt from Neves went just wide. In the 42nd minute Joao Felix (Portugal) shot just over the top. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time a Rodriguez drive was pushed away by Costa. At half time the score was still 0-0.

In the 51st minute, Joao Felix's header went over the bar. In the 55th minute, Jefferson Lerma's long range effort was beaten out by Costa. In the same minute, Arias had a long range shot that was saved. In the 60th minute Joao Felix fed Ronaldo through the centre, his shot went wide and he was offside to boot. In the 62nd minute Arias' low cross was met by Richard Ríos whose shot went wide. In the 66th minute Aruis' shot was beaten away by Costa. In the 67th minute, Gustavo Puerta's shot went just wide. In the 73rd minute, Luis Suarez miskicked in the area. In the 74th minute, Rodriguez's shot was deflected for a corner. In the 88th minute, Suarez missed his header at the far post (under pressure from Ruben Dias) and from the recycled ball, Suarez shot over the bar.

In the 1st minute of stoppage time a cross from Juan Quintero (Colombia) was headed in at the far post by Davinson Sanchez. The assistant referee flagged for offside. It didn't look like it in real time and Sanchez was adamant he was not offside (but what goalscorer would say otherwise?) It was ruled no goal by VAR. The subsequent reply showed it literally to be the toe of his boot. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time Portugal's Rafael Leao broke into the area, and his end product was neither a shot nor cross, and the ball went harmlessly across the goal. In the last minute of stoppage time Puerta's shot was blocked. The full time score was still 0-0.

As a result of this match Colombia topped the group and Portugal finished second; they both progress to the Round of 32. DR Congo finished third but seemed assured of being one of the eight-best third-placed teams. Uzbekistan was eliminated.
This match was the first time Colombia played out a 0-0 draw in a World Cup finals match.
6. The last match of the group for DR Congo and Uzbekistan took place in Atlanta, Georgia. The Uzbeks were already gone but DR Congo might finish in third place and progress out of the group stage with a sizeable win. How many goals did the Congolese score in this match?

Answer: 3

In the first 20 seconds Uzbekistan had the ball in the net via Eldor Shomurodov, but Dostonbek Khamdamov was offside in the lead up. In the 4th minute, an Uzbek cross was sliced away by Arthur Masuaku. In the 10th minute Aaron Wan-Bissaka went to sleep in his area and his opponent, Shomurodov chipped the DR Congo keeper, Lionel Mpasi. 1-0 to Uzbekistan. In the 17th minute Nathanael Mbuku scored when his shot went in at the near post. The goal was disallowed upon VAR review, after Mbuku had committed a foul in the lead up play. In the 38th minute Mpasi was forced to claw away a deflected cross. In the 42nd minute a corner was punched away by the Uzbek keeper Abduvohid Nematov. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time, Chancel Mbemba's shot for the Congolese went wide. Half time, score was 1-0 to Uzbekistan.

In the 50th minute DR Congo's Yoane Wissa dragged a shot well wide. In the 51st minute Shomurodov placed his shot on the turn just over the bar. In the 53rd minute, DR Congo's Brian Cipenga put his shot over the bar. In the 54th minute, Mbuku's shot was parried, when the ball came back in, the header was bounced own into the ground and over by Fiston Mayele. Turns out he was offside. In the 60th minute Mayele's shot went over. In the 61st minute Wissa didn't get enough deflection of his headed attempt, and it went wide. After 65 minutes Mbuku's cross into the area saw Wissa get fouled and a penalty kick was awarded. Wissa took the penalty himself and rolled it into the corner. Score was now 1-1.

In the 78th minute Mayele followed in on a deflected shot and got a faint touch to nick it past the keeper. 2-1 to DR Congo. In the first minute of stoppage time Wissa scored into the far corner of the net from outside the area. 3-1 to Congo. In the 6th minute of stoppage time Congo's Theo Bongonda blazed over. Full time, 3-1 to DR Congo.

As a result of this match DR Congo finished third but seem assured of being one of the eight-best third-placed teams. Colombia topped the group and Portugal finished second; they both progressed to the Round of 32. Uzbekistan was eliminated.

A low scoring group, this was. Portugal managed six, Colombia and DR Congo four each and lowly Uzbekistan scored twice.
