Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening match in Group B saw co-hosts Canada take on Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto. Down 1-0 at half-time, Canada dominated the second half and probably deserved to win on the balance of play. The point earned from this match was Canada's first point in how many World Cup Finals matches?

Answer: 7

Losses to France, Hungary and the Soviet Union in 1986, were followed in 2022 with defeats by Belgium, Croatia and Morocco. The Canucks would have reasonably felt they were due for some good fortune and when Cyle Larin equalised late in this match, they grabbed a deserved point.

Kerim Alajbegovic became the youngest player to appear for Bosnia and Herzegovina in a World Cup Finals match.
2. Qatar faced Switzerland in the second match of Group B. The Qataris equalised four minutes into stoppage time to leave the final result at 1-1. What was notable about this goal?

Answer: It earned Qatar their first ever point in a World Cup match

The Swiss scored from a Breel Embolo penalty in the first half and were well in control for most of the match. They had a number of chances (25 attempts!) to increase their lead but could not convert. During stoppage time, a cross into the far side of the penalty area was met with an unstoppable header into his own goal by Swiss defender Miro Muheim.

This last-gasp equaliser ensured the Qataris their first ever point in Finals matches, following their three defeats as the host country in 2022: 2-0 to Ecuador, 3-1 to Senegal and 2-0 to Netherlands.
3. Los Angeles saw Switzerland take on Bosnia and Herzegovina in each country's second match in the group. With all countries in the group having drawn their opening match, a win here today in the earlier game would see the victor on top of the group. What was the end result?

Answer: 4-1 to Switzerland

In the 74th minute, Johan Manzambi opened the scoring with a sharp volley from near the penalty spot, only three minutes after coming on as a substitute. At 20 years and 247 days, Manzambi became the youngest Swiss player to score at a World Cup Finals since 1950. Shortly after, Bosnia and Herzegovina's Tarik Muharemovic was shown a straight red card for a DOGSO (denial of goal scoring opportunity) when he scythed down Breel Embolo. Muharemovic became the fourth player to be red carded at the 2026 Finals.

Seven minutes from the end, a slick passing move took advantage of the extra man, and Ruben Vargas firmly side-footed the ball into the corner for 2-0. Manzambi added a third in the last minute of regulation time. 3-0 to Switzerland. Ermin Mahmic struck a wonderful volley through a veritable sea of players in stoppage time to reduce the deficit to two. 3-1 to Switzerland.

It was all happening! In the last minute of stoppage time, the Swiss captain Granit Xhaka converted a penalty to make the final score 4-1 to Switzerland. Four out of the five goals in this match were scored by substitutes.
4. Canada and Qatar faced off in Vancouver, knowing that a win would take them to equal top spot in the group. Neither country had ever won a World Cup finals match before, so that was an extra incentive. What DIDN'T happen in this match?

Answer: An assistant referee suffered a pulled hammy and had to be replaced

In the 16th minute, Cyle Larin pounced from close range on a parried shot to put the Canadians up 1-0. In the 29th minute, Jonathan David volleyed in from 10 metres after the ball was deflected up into his path, 2-0. In the 31st minute, the referee awarded a penalty for a push on Tajon Buchanan. After VAR intervention the decision was changed to a free kick, but as a consequence, as the offence took place outside the area, it became a DOGSO and the Qatari defender, Homan Ahmed, was sent off.

In the third minute of first half stoppage time, Jonathan David was first to react from close range after the Qatari keeper Mahmoud Abunada had made a sharp save from a Cyle Larin header, 3-0. In the 51st minute, Assim Madibo kicked through the back of Ismael Kone's leg, and was given a yellow card. It quickly became obvious that Kone's injury was very serious. After some minutes of Kone being treated, the referee presented Madibo with a straight red card, without any indication that he was rescinding the yellow. After this, the television graphic indicated that a VAR review was considering whether the card should be upgraded. All very confusing. To add to the confusion, as Kone was being rolled off the pitch on his stretcher, he sat up and gave a thumbs up, which prompted the commentator to say: "Hopefully his injury isn't as bad as it looks". Perhaps they missed his lower leg hanging at an un-natural angle following the challenge. A broken leg is bad by any measure... It was later revealed that Kone has a broken tibia and fibula.

Back to the football. After 62 minutes, Qatar's Ahmad Fathy is booked for yet another crappy tackle just outside the area. Nathan Saliba curled the kick around the wall and in off the post, 4-0. In the 75th minute, after a goalmouth scramble, Jacob Shaffelburg thought he had scored but it was awarded as an own goal to Mohamed Manai. In the 2nd of nine minutes' stoppage time, Jonathan David completed his hat-trick when he was in the right place to block Nathan Saliba's shot and then slot it past the keeper. It was the first hat-trick scored by a player from a host nation since Geoff Hursts' three goals for England in the 1966 final.

ZERO sympathy for Qatar - their problems in this match were entirely of their own making. Their opponents were strong, scored early, and when 50-50 calls didn't go their way, they lost focus and simply went into whinge/hack/wave-your-arms-a-lot/sulk mode. As an aside, Canada wore their black playing strip at the match - looking at it closely, it made them all look like they had been at a house painting party....
5. Matchday 3, Bosnia and Herzegovina met Qatar in Seattle. With both countries on a single point to this stage, a win was imperative for either side. Which country won?

Answer: Bosnia and Herzegovina

In the 2nd minute Ermedin Demirovic had a shot well saved by Qatar's keeper Mahmoud Abunada. In the 3rd minute, a shot from Ivan Sunjic from the same position resulted in the same save. After 16 minutes, Bosnia's Ivan Basic had a shot from 25 metres which went over the top. In the 29th minute, Kerim Alajbegovic dribbled across the outside of the penalty area until he found the space to shoot, and he arrowed one just inside the post, 1-0 to Bosnia & Herzegovina. Five minutes later, Edin Dzeko attempted to return a cross back into the area, but it deflected into the goal at the near post off defender Sultan Albrake. 2-0 to Bosnia & Herzegovina. In the 38th minute, Dzeko hit the inside of the post.

In the 42nd minute, Qatar pulled a goal back when Hassan Alhaydos had a tap in after Edmilson Junior had squared the ball into the goal box. 2-1. In the 3rd minute of first half stoppage time, Qatar's Pedro Miguel also hit the inside of the post. In the 57th Minute, Qatar's Akram Afif blasted a shot into the side netting. Three minutes later his attempted curler into the top corner went high and wide instead. In the 76th minute, Alajbegovic repeated that scenario at the other end. In the 79th minute, Alajbegovic shot from outside the area, but Abunada saved comfortably. One minute later after a goalmouth scramble Ermin Mahmic squeezed the ball under the keeper, 3-1 to Bosnia & Herzegovina. In the 4th minute of stoppage time, Qatar's Pedro had a shot from distance which sailed just over. Ful time score: Bosnia and Herzegovina 3, Qatar1.

As a result of this match, and Switzerland's 2-1 victory over Canada, the Swiss top the group and Canada finish second on goal difference from Bosnia and Herzegovina, so both Switzerland and Canada advance to the Round of 32. Bosnia and Herzegovina must wait to see if they are one of the eight best third placed teams. Qatar is eliminated.

Kerim Alajbegovic became the youngest player to score for Bosnia and Herzegovina in a World Cup Finals match.
6. Matchday 3, Canada and Switzerland met in Vancouver. A draw would be enough for Switzerland to top the group, Canada required a win. What was the final result?

Answer: Switzerland won 2-1

In the 11th minute Canada's keeper Maxime Crepeau blocked Bree Embolo's shot, and the follow up shot from Johan Manzambi was blocked by Derek Cornelius. In the 13th minute Larin was one on one with the Gregor Kobel but his touch was poor and the keeper got fingers to it and he was subsequently ruled offside. In the 17th minute Embolo shot straight at the keeper. In the 33rd minute Larin cut inside and attempted to curl the ball around the keeper, but his shot was tame. In the 40th minute, Canada's Ali Ahmed tried to beat the keeper at the near post but his shot was also tame. 44 minutes gone and Jonathon David shot wide. 0-0 at half-time.

Less than a minute after the start of the second half, Switzerland's Ruben Vargas found himself in space on the left side of the penalty area, and his shot went in off the post, 1-0 to Switzerland. In the 56th minute, Canada's Larin didn't get enough on his header and the chance was gone. At the other end, the Swiss attacked and Manzambi shot under the Crepeau's body into the far corner, 2-0 to Switzerland. In the 61st minute, Cornelius' shot was deflected away for a corner. In the 68th minute, David turned and made room for a shot, but it was blocked by Nico Elvedi.

In the 76th minute, Canada clawed a goal back. Nathan Saliba controlled the ball well and half-volleyed a cross into the area, for Promise David to score with an outside of the foot volley. It was his first touch after coming on as a substitute. 2-1 to Switzerland. In the 79th minute Cornelius put a header wide which he should have done better with. He repeated that effort with a slightly harder chance in the first minute of stoppage time. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time, Promise David flicked on a long throw, but his header was saved by Kobel. In the last minute of stoppage time, Jacob Shaffelburg's cross was met with a header by Alistair Johnston, but his placement was too deliberate and was saved comfortably. Promise David had one last chance in a scramble but the ball was gathered by Kobel. Full time score: Switzerland 2, Canada 1.

As a result of this match, and Bosnia and Herzegovina's 3-1 victory over Qatar, Switzerland top the group and Canada finish second on goal difference from Bosnia and Herzegovina, so both countries advance to the Round of 32. Bosnia and Herzegovina must wait to see if they are one of the eight best third placed teams. Qatar is eliminated. Switzerland qualified from the group stage for the sixth time in their last seven World Cup Finals campaigns.
