Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening match of Group C saw Brazil take on Morocco at the New York/New Jersey Stadium. In what regard was Morocco's goal a 'first' for the tournament?

Answer: It was the first goal scored from outside of the penalty area

The last time these two countries met in a Finals match was in France 1998, where the Brazilians won 3-0. This match was a different story, Morocco showed that the performance they put in at Qatar 2022 by reaching the semi-finals was no fluke, as they held Brazil to a 1-1 draw. Morocco's Ismeal Saibari scored the opening goal of the match when he ran onto a perfectly weighted through ball, took one controlling touch, and 'dinked it' over the advancing keeper from just outside the 'D'. Brazil equalised in the 32nd minute via Vinicius Jr's strike.
2. In the second match in Group C, the perennial under-achievers Scotland faced Haiti in Boston. The Scots took a first half lead though a deflected shot from John McGinn, but Haiti hung in there and had much the better of the second half. What was the end score?

Answer: Scotland won 1-0

In their previous nine Finals appearances, Scotland had never made it past the opening round (group phase). Haiti, in their only previous finals appearance, in 1974, had lost 3-1 to Italy, 7-0 to Poland and 4-1 to Argentina.

A few observations from the game: Scotland did little here to suggest that their woeful record will change, considering the quality of football served up in the earlier group match by their upcoming opponents, Brazil and Morocco, it is hard to see where another point is coming from. The ghosts of Zaire 1974 may come back to bite - then, they only defeated Les Grenadiers by 2 goals, and that lack of goal difference saw them leave the tournament on that basis.
3. Scotland vs. Morocco -the Atlas Lions of Morocco were determined to show that their draw with Brazil in their first group game was no fluke. How many goals were scored in this match?

Answer: 1

In the second minute, Moroccan Ismael Saibari latched onto a through ball from Brahim Diaz and rifled a cannonball past Scotland's keeper Angus Gunn. 1-0 to Morocco. What more is to be said? Not a lot else happened. Scotland dominated the last few minutes of the game but by then it was too little too late. Has Scotland's World Cup Finals malaise returned to haunt them yet again? Not to worry, they have a match remaining against Brazil to make things right... Saibari's goal was the fastest at this World Cup Finals up to this point.

It was also the earliest goal Morocco had scored at a World Cup Finals tournament.
4. Haiti and Brazil squared off in Philadelphia. Knowing that Morocco had beaten Scotland earlier, Brazil needed to win to join them at the top of the group. What was the final result?

Answer: Brazil won 3-0

A slow start but a comfortable victory for the five-time champions. In the 23rd minute, Vinicius Jr created the first goal by firing a shot that Haitian keeper Johnny Placide fumbled. Matheus Cunha accepted the gift and tapped in from close range. 1-0 to Brazil. In the 36th minute it was Cunha again, being fed with a through ball from Vinicius Jr and slamming the ball into the top corner. 2-0 to Brazil. Just before half time and Vinicius Jr was the goalscorer this time, after receiving a pass from Lucas Paqueta and sliding it past Placide. 3-0 to Brazil. In the second half there were no more goals, they came close though. Gabriel Martinelli's effort hit the bar and Endrick had a goal chalked off after being flagged offside.

This result moved Brazil ahead of Morocco on goal difference, meaning that their destiny in finishing top of the group lies totally within their hands. Haiti is pointless and goalless after two games and their chances of finishing as one of the 8 best third place countries for progression to the next round are extremely slim.
5. Matchday 3 - Morocco vs. Haiti in Atlanta. Morocco is looking for a good result in the hope of topping the group and automatic qualification for the Round of 32. Haiti are looking for their first point or goal. How many goals were scored in this match?

Answer: 6

The match started at a frantic pace. In the 7th minute, Haiti's Jean-Ricner Bellegarde fizzed a long range free kick just over the bar. In the 10th minute came the moment most of the world had been waiting for: Haiti's Lenny Joseph backheeled the ball in (via the keeper, Yassine Bounou) after it was crossed into the area by Jean-Kevin Duverne. Cue pandemonium in the stadium, 1-0 to Haiti. Ultimately, it was awarded as an own goal, but who really cared (apart from Lenny Joseph)? In the 12th minute, Morocco's Ayoub El Kaabi's shot-come-cross was beaten around the post by Bounou. In the 13th minute, an unmarked Ismael Saibari butchered a gilt-edged chance in front of goal by skying his shot. In the 23rd minute, Saibari's curling low shot was well saved by Bounou.

In the 30th minute, Haiti's Johny Placide pulled off a fantastic double save to block Achraf Hakimi's shot and then recover to push El Kaabi's shot wide of the post. In the 34th minute Joeph did well to jink his way through into the Moroccan penalty area but then blazed his shot wide. In the 36th minute, Morocco's Saibari looped a header over. In the 39th minute, Morocco equalised. A cross into the box was deflected, Placide made a good reflex save to keep that out, but it fell into the path of the airborne Hakimi, who scored despite his attempted kick completely missing, as the ball hit his trailing leg and ended up in the goal with him! Score now 1-1.

More drama to come! In the 43rd minute, Haiti's Josue Casimir won possession outside of the area, fed a pass to Wilson Isidor who hit a screamer into the top left corner of the goal, where the spiders live. 2-1 to Haiti. In the 1st minute of stoppage time, Saibari got onto the end of a low drilled cross from the right to place his shot past the keeper, score now 2-2. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time, Brahim Diaz fluffed his shot across goal when it looked easier to score. In the 59th minute, Placide made a fantastic low diving save to deny Bilal El Khannouss.

In the 78th minute, Morocco took the lead for the first time, when substitute Soufiane Rahimi controlled and turned well, and his shot took two slight deflections on the way in. 3-2 to Morocco. Then, a moment of contention. In the 88th minute, Rahimi fought to keep the ball in play. The Haitian goalie and defenders all stopped. Rahimi played the ball across goal to Gessime Yassine who tapped the ball into the net. The whistle had not sounded - schoolkid error. VAR confirmed the ball had not left play. 4-2 to Morocco. In the last minute of stoppage time, a long range piledriver from Duckens Nazon was saved at full length by Bounou. Full time, a bridge too far for Haiti but what a performance, and what a wake up call for Morocco.

With this result, and Brazil's win over Scotland, Morocco are confirmed as Group runners-up behind Brazil and both countries move forward to the Round of 32. Scotland had to wait on other results to see if they are one of the 8 best third-placed countries. Haiti, for all their entertainment value, still didn't have a point at World Cup Finals tournaments, but they now had two goals. Haiti is eliminated.
6. Scotland face Brazil in a blockbuster (for the Scots, anyway) on Matchday 3 in Miami. Brazil needed a sizeable victory to ensure top place in Group C on goal difference. A draw would enhance Scotland's chances of progressing to the KO rounds. What happened in the end?

Answer: Brazil won 3-0

The first thing of note to occur in this match came in the 7th minute, with Scotland's Scott McKenna dallying too long on the ball, being dispossessed by Rayan, who passed to Vinicius Jr, who wrong-footed Angus Gunn to roll the ball into the net, 1-0 to Brazil. In the 19th minute Vinicius Jr shot across the goal rather than feed Rayan, and the chance was gone. In the 22nd minute Jack Hendry thought "Anything McKenna can do, I can do better". With that, he dawdled on the ball with his back to goal, got robbed by Vinicius Jr, who then rolled the ball between Gunn's legs. However, upon VAR review, the goal was chalked off due to the slightest of contact in the challenge. Would Scotland learn from stuffing up not once, but twice?

In the 33rd minute John McGinn crossed into the box but McKenna's header was wayward and got cleared. In the 38th minute, McTominay was dispossessed in midfield and Brazil attacked, only for Rayan to shoot wide. In the 42nd minute Matheus Cunha also shot wide. In the 45th minute a slick passing move from Brazil saw the ball flashed across goal by Cunha, it was cleared off the line by Nathan Patterson but into the back of Gunn - luckily it deflected away for a corner. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time, the tartan dalliances returned, Andy Robertson won the ball in the penalty area and immediately gave soft possession back to Brazil. Bruno Guimaraes' cross was sent to the far post where the waiting head of Vinicius Jr nodded it home. In the very last minute of stoppage time, Lucas Paqueta did really well to feed Rayan, whose shot was kept out by Gunn's block. 2-0 to Brazil at half time, and I suspect the teapot and hairdryer treatment awaits Scotland's players in the dressing room during the break.

Scotland started the second half brightly, Kieran Tierney's long cross from the left being met with a powerful header from Scott McTominay, unfortunately, straight the keeper, Alisson Becker. In the 51st minute Vinicius Jr was on the claim his hat trick but his attempt was easily saved by Gunn. In the 61st minute, Brazil scored again. A sharp passing move saw them transition from halfway to the penalty area, Guimaraes dummied to shoot but passed the ball to Cunha, who scored at the near post. In the 64th minute, Lewis Ferguson tried a cheeky direct free kick towards the far corner, but Alisson was awake to it and palmed it away. In the following minute, and another Tierney cross was met with another McTominay header, this one better placed which brought a good diving save from Alisson.

In the 72nd minute, McTominay put a difficult half chance over the bar. In the 79th minute, Gunn denied Vinicius Jr his hat trick with a fingertip save at the near post. In the 81st minute, Vinicius Jr again was on the end of a low cross, but got his feet mixed up. In the last minute of stoppage time, McTominay connected on the turn with a low cross, but his effort was smothered by Alisson. Full time, 3-0 to Brazil.

With this result, and Morocco's comeback win over Haiti, Brazil were Group winners and Morocco joined them in the Round of 32 as runners-up. Scotland had to wait on other results to see if they were one of the 8 best third-placed countries. Haiti, for all their entertainment value, still did not have a point at a World Cup Finals tournaments, but they now had two goals. Haiti is eliminated.

Vinicius Jr became the fifth Brazilian to score in all three games of a World Cup Finals group stage, following Jairzinho (1970), Romario (1994), and Ronaldo and Rivaldo (both 2002). Each time Brazil went on to win the tournament.
7. Which country finished last in Group C?

Answer: Haiti

This group finished spot on according the bookies. Haiti never looked in the hunt, Scotland were Scotland, Morocco looked to be continuing their form from the last tournament 2022 Qatar, and then there was Brazil!
8. Which player had scored the most goals in Group C?

Answer: Vinicius Jr (Brazil)

Vinicius Jr came out of the traps firing in the first match, scoring Brazil's equaliser against Morocco. He then nabbed one on the stroke of half time against Haiti and knocked two in against Scotland for good measure. Cunha and Saibari got three each, in Saibari's case, one against each country in the group. There was one own goal in this group, scored by Haiti's Yassine Bounou for Morocco.
9. Which country had scored the most goals in Group C?

Answer: Brazil

Group winners Brazil looked more or less in control scoring their seven, Runners-up Morocco got six, Haiti who lost all three games still scored two, and then there was Scotland, who massively failed to achieve, scoring just a single goal.
10. Which country had conceded the most goals in Group C?

Answer: Haiti

Haiti's return after 52 years didn't go well (their first appearance was in 1974), as they allowed eight goals past the keeper. Perennial underachievers Scotland only conceded four but crucially they were in two losses. Morocco shipped three and group winners Brazil just the single goal.
