Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First up in Group I was France versus Senegal in the New York/New Jersey Stadium. Les Bleus got off to a great start by winning 3-1. When were the goals scored?

Answer: Every goal was scored in the second half

With the game locked 0-0 at half-time, the goals flowed in the second half. Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring after 60 minutes and substitute Bradley Barcola added a second after 82 minutes. Senegal drew one back though Ibrahim Mbaye five minutes into stoppage time, but Mbappe replied with his second one minute later.

France's only opening game defeat in their previous eight global tournaments had come in the 2002 World Cup Finals - against Senegal! Kylian Mbappe's brace made him France's all-time leading scorer with 58 goals, surpassing Olivier Giroud's record.
2. In their opening match in Group I, Norway played against the group minnows (as most viewed them), Iraq in Boston, Massachusetts. Which individual was a multiple goal scorer in this match?

Answer: Erling Haaland (Norway)

Erling Haaland, almost predictably, opened the scoring when he got on the end of a cross from David Moller Wolfe. Iraq scored a quality equaliser through Aymen Hussein ten minutes later. A couple of minutes before half-time, Haaland pounced on a soft back pass with the keeper, Fahad Talib, almost stationary and asleep, and scored when the keeper's clearance bounced off his leg.

Norway led 2-1 at the 75-minute mark but kicked on to score two more goals after that to win comfortably by 4-1. Martin Odegaard had added a third after 76 minutes and the rout was completed in stoppage time when Aymen Hussein undid his earlier good work by putting through his own net in stoppage time. Hussein became the first player in this tournament to score for both sides in the same game.

Norway's Orjan Nyland became the oldest player to make a World Cup appearance for his country, at the age of 35 years and 279 days.
3. Matchday 2 for France and Iraq was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. France was coming off a win, Iraq coming off a loss. What was the final result?

Answer: 4-1 France

After a single minute, Manu Kone put a long range shot across goal that Kylian Mbappe almost got on the end of. After 13 minutes the ball rolled across the outside of the penalty area and Mbappe hit a powerful shot across the keeper, Ahmed Basil, into the far corner. 1-0 to France. Iraq spent the majority of the first half sitting deep, hoping to hit on the counter attack (which wasn't happening). In the closing minutes of the first half, the heavens opened and the rains came down. During the break, the weather got worse with lightning and heavy rain - as a result, half time lasted 130 minutes!

In the 54th minute, Iraq stuffed up a simple goal kick, when Basil wasn't watching as the ball was passed to him by Zaid Tahseen, he missed it, Ousmane Dembele pounced on it and passed it back across goal for Mbappe to pass it into an unguarded net. 2-0 to France. Iraq had suffered a similar mix-up because of inattention from their then goalie Fahad Talib in their first game against Norway. Shortly after Michael Olise chipped the ball onto the top of the crossbar. In the 59th minute, Dembele had a shot well saved by Talib, the parry went to Adrien Rabiot, but his reflex header went wide. In the 66th minute Dembele put a shot into the side netting, and straight after play resumed, the same player was put through by Olise and scored in the far corner, 3-0 to France.

To this point, France had been almost exclusive in their domination of the game. Iraq won a corner in the 73rd minute, Rebin Sulaka put his half volley attempt over the bar. In the 76th minute Ali Al-Hamadi slid in at the far post and his connection went just wide. In the 80th minute Mbappe appeared to be blocked inside the area but the referee waved his claim away. Later in the same minute Mbappe shoe wide after running onto a looped pass from Rayan Cherki. In the 89th minute it was Mbappe again, but his shot was straight into the arms of keeper Basil. In the 90th minute it was Mbappe yet again but this time he blazed wide. Full time, France are 3-0 victors.

As a result of this scoreline, France had qualified for the Round of 32. Mbappe had now scored four goals at this World Cup, one behind Lionel Messi at this stage. Mbappe won his 100th cap for France in this match.
4. Norway and Senegal met on Matchday 2 at the New York/New Jersey Stadium. Norway were keen for a win in this match, so they could progress to the Round of 32. Senegal wanted to avenge their opening loss to France to keep their hopes alive. Were there any yellow or red cards shown in this match?

Answer: No

In the first three minutes Norway didn't let Senegal have a sniff of the ball and had a number or corners and goal attempts, but to no avail. The match evened up after that. In the 14th minute Norway's Martin Odegaard blazed wide. In the 28th minute, Senegal's Nicolas Jackson attempted a curler into the top far corner but got his angles all wrong. After a lot more midfield play from both sides, in the 36th minute Haaland cushioned the ball into Odegaard's path, who controlled and shot on the half volley, but the shot was blocked by Edouard Mendy's legs.

In the 38th minute Senegal passed the ball right across the front of Norway's goal without a touch and then Sadio Mane blazed over when the ball was recycled. After 40 minutes, Lamine Camara tried a long range shot which went harmlessly wide. Then, at last, in the 43rd minute, Marcus Holmgren Pedersen pounced on a poorly directed pass from Kalidou Koulibaly, surged into the area and blasted his shot past Mendy, who could only get a slight hand to it.1-0 to Norway. In the last minute of first half stoppage time, Halland rounded the goalie after he dithered on the ball, but his shot hit the post from a tight angle. The ball was subsequently crossed back in, and Haaland then angled a towering header to the corner of the goal, but it was blocked by a great save from Mendy. Norway leads at half time, 1-0.

Three minutes into the second half and Norway led attack upfield where they had four on two. A beautifully weighted through ball from Odegaard found Haaland in full stride, whose finish was just as good. 2-0 to Sweden. In the 52nd minute, Jackson rose high for Senegal, but his header was saved by Orjan Nyland. In the 53rd minute Ismaila Sarr got the benefit of a couple of lucky ricochets on his way into the area, but his finish to lift the ball past Nyland from a falling position was impressive. 2-1 to Norway.

The 58th minute saw Haaland scoring again. Patrick Berg found room in the area to chip a cross over to Haaland who directed a side foot volley in off the crossbar. In Mendy's attempt to save, he flew so high that he damaged himself when he fell to earth and had to be replaced by Mory Diaw. 3-1 to Norway. In the 84th minute, a goalmouth scramble saw Jackson's attempt for Senegal saved by Nyland. Jackson was subsequently ruled offside.

Haaland was played through again in the 88th minute but his turn and shot was well blocked. In the third minute of stoppage time, Senegal pulled a goal back after Sarr was fed in the box by Jackson. 3-2 to Norway. In the 90th minute a mazy run for Odergaard took him all the way to the goal line, where he cut it back. Oscar Bobb's resulting shot was headed over by Pathe Ciss. There were later chances at both ends but no more goals. Final score, 3-2 to Norway. To confirm the quiz answer, FIFA's website report on this match confirms no yellow or red cards were issued.
