Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which famous television play-by-play broadcaster sent Canada into a frenzy in 1972 with the words "Here's a shot! Henderson made a wild stab for it and fell. Here's another shot! Right in front... they score! Henderson... has scored for Canada!"

Answer: Foster Hewitt

Still sends chills down my back. 16 million Canadians watched Canada defeat the Soviet Union in this game, or 72% of the country's population. This was the game winning goal of the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and Russia in which Canada was losing the series (3 losses, 1 win and 1 tie), but won 3 consecutive games in Moscow to win the series.

Henderson's series winning goal was scored with 34 seconds left in the third period of the final game. Had Canada not scored this goal, Russia would have claimed victory on the basis of goal differential with both teams winning three games. The series is legendary in Canada and opened the door for Russian players to join the NHL in the future.
2. There are a few versions of Bobby Orr's Stanley Cup winning goal in 1970 against the St. Louis Blues. But the most famous was broadcast on CBS "Bobby Orr ... behind the net to Sanderson ... to Orr.... Bobby Orr... scores... and the Boston Bruins win the Stanley Cup!" . Who was this famous broadcaster?

Answer: Dan Kelly

Bobby Orr scored in overtime to win the game 4-3 and the series 4-0. The Bruins' first Stanley Cup since 1941, the call will still give you goosebumps.
3. The United States 1980 Olympic hockey team won the gold medal with the Miracle on Ice team. Who was the broadcaster who described this win by asking "Do you believe in miracles? YES!"

Answer: Al Michaels

36 million people watched the game from USA and Canada, cheering on the heavy underdog USA team. The United States scored two goals in the third period to defeat the Soviet Union 4-3 to win the gold medal. The Americans held on to the 4-3 lead for the final 10 minutes of the game, which seemed like a lifetime for players and fans as the heavily favored Soviets pressed for the tieing goal.

Al Michael's call as the clock expired let the entire country breath a sigh of relief followed by exultation. The game was memorable not only for the gold medal win by an underdog but it was also played during the Cold War with Russia. Similar to the 1972 Canada/Russia Summit Series, it was much more than a hockey game due to political overtones and it also helped open the door for Russian stars to join the NHL in the future.
4. "They're goin' home! They're goin' home! Yeah! They're goin' home!". Who was Bob Cole talking about in 1976?

Answer: Soviet Red Army hockey team

In 1976 the Philadelphia Flyers were known as the "Broadstreet Bullies", often using violence and intimidation to win hockey games. In 1976 the NHL and the Soviet Union agreed to play 8 games under NHL rules as a "friendly tournament". Going into the final game, the Soviets had won 5 (against Pittsburgh, Boston, Chicago, Rangers and Islanders), lost 1 (Buffalo) and tied 1 (Montreal). The final game against Philadelphia (January 11 1976) was considered a "must win" by Philadelphia owner Ed Snider as Philadelphia was the defending Stanley Cup champion and he wanted to prove Philadelphia had the best team in the world.

In the first period with the score still 0-0, Philadelphia defenseman Ed Van Imp charged and cross-checked Soviet star Valerie Kharlamov from behind leaving Kharlamov sprawling on the ice. The referee called it a clean hit and did not assess a penalty. The Soviet Union team left the ice for their dressing room in protest, giving cause to Bob Cole's famous call that they were "goin' home!". The Soviets were later convinced to return to the ice after being threatened not to be paid. The Soviets were assessed a 2 minute penalty for delay of game and Philadelphia won the game 4-1.

Answer: St. Louis Blues

Doug Gilmour scored a spectacular goal from behind the net against the St. Louis Blues in the 1993 playoffs, marking a pivotal moment in the Toronto Maple Leafs' victory. In double overtime, Gilmour set up the play by cutting to his right and then reversing to his left, pulling away from Curtis Joseph before spinning and wrapping the puck into the net.

In 1972, Canada played the Soviet Union in an eight game tournament. The first four games were played in Canada and the last four games were played in Moscow. Canada lost the first game in Montreal, tied the second in Toronto and lost the next two games in Winnipeg and Vancouver.

After losing game 4 by a score of 5-3 in Vancouver, the players were boo'd off the ice. As he skated off the ice, Phil Esposito gave this heart-felt speech, while being boo'd, on national television. The team rallied after this and won 3 out of 4 games in Moscow to win the series.
12. "Joe Sakic... Joe Sakic... scores! And that makes it 5-2 for Canada! Surely that's gotta be it!". Another Bob Cole call in 2002 which marked the first Olympic gold medal for Canada in how many years?

Answer: 50

Canada was desperate for a gold medal in 2002 after being eliminated by Czech Republic in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Dominic Hasek stopped the Canadians in a shootout in 1998, in which the Canadian coach, Mike Keenan, refused to use Wayne Gretzky as one of the shooters.
