Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1976 Montreal became the first Canadian city to host the Olympics (summer or winter).

Answer: True

In the same year, Toronto hosted Canada's first paralympic games. Calgary and Vancouver later hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1988 and 2010, respectively.
2. At age 14, gymnast Nadia Comăneci became the first person to score a perfect 10 at the Olympics, recording seven 10.0 scores and winning three gold medals. She quickly became very famous and remains perhaps the most well-known athlete of these Olympics. Which country did she represent?

Answer: Romania

Clearly the Olympic organizers did not anticipate anyone getting a perfect score. The scoreboard could hold only 3 digits and the score was shown as 1.00.
3. The mascot of the Montreal games was named Amik. Which Canadian animal did it represent?

Answer: Beaver

In the Algonquin language, amik means "beaver."
4. The Montreal Olympics are well-known for costing much more than planned. What percentage over budget were the direct costs of the Montreal Olympics (the competition venues, the Olympic village, international broadcast centre, and media and press centre, etc).

Answer: 720%

Much of the cost overruns are blamed on the Conseil des métiers de la construction union. By comparison, the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro were over-run by 51%, the 2012 games in London were over by 76% and the average over-run for all games (including Montreal) from 1960 to 2016 was 176%.

This memory was not that much fun for Montreal residents as they continued to pay off the debt through property taxes for many years!
5. Taro Aso was a member of the Japanese shooting team ... 32 years later, he became famous. Why?

Answer: He was elected Prime Minister of Japan

While competing at the Montreal Olympics, Aso served as president of the Aso Mining Company, at age 35. In mid-2008 Asō conceded that his family's coal mine, Aso Mining Company, was alleged to have forced Allied prisoners of war to work in the mines in 1945 without pay. Western media reported that 300 prisoners, including 197 Australians, 101 British, and two Dutch, worked in the mine.

He was PM of Japan for one year from September 2008 to September 2009.
6. Greg Joy created a fun memory for Canadians on a Saturday afternoon (July 31), by winning a silver medal. It was one of five silver medals for Canada during the Montreal games. In which sport did Greg compete?

Answer: High Jump

Greg won the silver medal in the high jump at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. This was the highest medal earned by Canada in these games. Canada became the first host country in summer Olympics history not to produce at least one gold medal winner. Greg Joy was later selected to carry Canada's flag at the closing ceremony. Canada won 11 medals - 5 silver and 6 bronze - and finished 27th in the medals table.
7. Sugar Ray Leonard, Leon Spinks, Michael Spinks and Muhammad Ali were all members of the U.S boxing team at the 1976 Montreal games.

Answer: False

Sugar Ray Leonard, Leon Spinks, Michael Spinks, Leo Randolph and Howard Davis Jr. won gold medals in boxing. This has been often called the greatest Olympic boxing team the USA ever had, and, out of the five American gold medalists in boxing, all but Davis went on to become professional world champions. Muhammad Ali did not participate in the games.
8. What were the #1 songs in Canada on the Opening Day and Closing Day of the Montreal 1976 Olympics?

Answer: "More, More, More" and "Afternoon Delight"

1976 was quite the year for memorable songs! "Afternoon Delight" earned a gold record. The song, according to band member Taffy Danoff, made the band a "one hit wonder" and was the main reason they are mentioned with other one hit wonders in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "More, More, More" was recorded by American porn star Andrea True and although it did not make the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was voted in 2000 by VH1 as #45 in their list of "100 Greatest Dance Songs".
9. Montreal was awarded the rights to the 1976 Games over the bids of Moscow and Los Angeles.

Answer: True

The vote occurred at the 69th IOC Session in Amsterdam, Netherlands on May 12, 1970. While Los Angeles and Moscow were viewed as the favourites, given that they represented the world's two main powers, many of the smaller and neutral countries supported Montreal as an underdog and as a relatively neutral site for the Games. Los Angeles was eliminated after the first round, and Montreal won over Moscow in the second round.
10. Who was the only female athlete to not have to submit to a sex test?

Answer: Princess Anne

Princess Anne of Great Britain was the only female competitor not to have to submit to a sex test. She was a member of her country's equestrian team.
11. Hasely Crawford won his country's first Olympic gold medal by finishing first in the 100 meter dash. Which country is he from?

Answer: Trinidad and Tobago

Crawford won the gold medal with a time of 10.06 seconds. After the Olympics, he had both a jet and a stadium named after him. During his reign as the 100 metre Olympic champion, he also appeared on postage stamps and was awarded Trinidad and Tobago's highest honour, Trinity Cross, in 1978. In 2000, he was named the Trinidad & Tobago Athlete of the Millennium.
12. Boris Onishchenko, a member of the Soviet Union Olympic team, was disqualified from his sport. Due to his disqualification, he earned the nickname "Boris DISonish-chenko". Why was he disqualified?

Answer: It was discovered that he had rigged his fencing épée to register a hit when there was not one.

Because of Onishchenko's tactics, the Soviet modern pentathlon team was disqualified. Many suggested that he was a victim of the Soviet "win it all" mentality. Despite this, the Soviet Union won the most medals in the Montreal Olympics with 49 Gold, 41 Silver and 35 Bronze.
13. Which country won the men's field hockey gold medal?

Answer: New Zealand

The New Zealand men's national field hockey team beat Australia 1-0 to win gold, becoming the first non-Asian/European team to win the gold medal in field hockey. It is also the first Olympic games in which field hockey was played on artificial turf.
14. The Olympic Stadium in Montreal was used after the Olympics were over to host Canada's first major league baseball team. The name of the team was Montreal ______ .

Answer: Expos

The Expos played in the National League (NL) East division from 1969 until 2004. Before the Montreal Olympics, they played in Jarry Park. After the 2004 season, the franchise moved to Washington, D.C., and became the Washington Nationals.
15. The Olympic flame was lit by a young Quebec 8-year old singing sensation, Celine Dion.

Answer: False

While this would have been a great memory, it is not true. The torch was carried by 15-year-olds Stéphane Préfontaine and Sandra Henderson, chosen as representatives of the unity within Canada's linguistic heritage. This would also be the first time two people would light the Olympic flame.

The duo would make a lap of the stadium and then climbed a staircase on a special dais at the centre of the stadium to set the Olympic flame alight in a temporary white aluminum cauldron. The flame was later transported to a more permanent cauldron just outside the running track to burn throughout the duration of the Games. After a rainstorm doused the Olympic Flame a few days after the games had opened, an official relit the flame using his cigarette lighter. Organizers quickly doused it again and relit it using a backup of the original flame.
