Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many races did Secretariat lose in his career?

Answer: 5

The fact that he actually lost lends an almost human quality to him. I also wanted to show that being undefeated doesn't constitute greatness.
2. What was the name of Secretariat's sister?

Answer: The Bride

It was part of an agreement that was made between Meadow Stable and Claiborne Farm. Meadow Stable sent mares to be bred to Bold Ruler at Claiborne. Each year a coin was flipped to determine who would get the horses born. The Farm took The Bride and next year Meadow Stable got Secretariat.

Some prize for losing a coin toss, huh? He also had another sister who was a stakes winner herself named Syrian Sea.
3. Did Secretariat win his first-ever race?

Answer: no

He finished fourth after a rough start. It was a five and a half furlong maiden race at Aqueduct. He was bumped from both sides coming out from the gate and nearly went down. He composed himself and came flying into fourth.
4. What time did Secretariat run the Kentucky Derby?

Answer: 1:59.2

He was the first to run a sub 2:00 Derby.
5. Which race did Secretariat lose which caused many to think that his earlier wins had been flukes?

Answer: Wood Memorial Stakes

He lost this race to Angle Light and Sham (his greatest rival). It has been said that he had an abscess on his lower lip that was causing him problems before that race and that it caused him to lose. The abscess popped before the Derby and then...well the rest is history.
6. By how many lengths did Secretariat beat Sham by in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes?

Answer: 2 and a half lengths

In both races he flew ahead of Sham by two and a half lengths and won. In the Belmont, however, he won the race by a remarkable 31 lengths from Twice A Prince, with Sham finishing 5th some 40-45 lengths behind Secretariat.
7. What did Secretariat die from?

Answer: Laminitis

Sadly, Secretariat had to be put to sleep due to complications of laminitis, an incurable hoof disease. He died on October 4, 1989.
8. Prior to Secretariat's win, how many lengths was the previous record winning margin in the Belmont Stakes?

Answer: 25

Count Fleet had set the previous record for his win in the Belmont by 25 lengths in 1943. Secretariat shattered that with his 31 length romp.
9. Where is a bronze statue of Secretariat located?

Answer: Belmont Park, NY

The statue stands as a memorial to the greatest racehorse who ever lived. There are also bronze statues of Secretariat at the Hall of Fame in Saratoga (New York), and at the Kentucky Horse Park.
10. By how many seconds did Secretariat beat Gallant Man's track record at the Belmont Stakes?

Answer: 2 and three fifths seconds

Just to add one last finishing touch to Secretariat's incredible resume, I thought that the fact that he beat a track record by almost 3 seconds would help explain his magnificence. Along the way, he also beat his own record for the mile and a quarter.
