Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hard-hit ball hit on a straight line

Answer: Line Drive

A line drive is a ball that has a high speed off the bat and is hit on a low trajectory. Some of these balls might be caught by infielders before leaving the baseball diamond, and some might be sent straight to an outfielder for an out, but if they are hit in areas where fielders can't immediately field them, they often turn in to extra bases like doubles and triples.
2. List of players on a given team who are starting the game

Answer: Lineup

Lineup is a common term especially used in baseball that lists the order of hitters in order of when they will hit. High on-base players with speed tend to lead off the lineup, while players with power (i.e. players who hit for extra bases such as doubles, triples and home runs) hit in the middle of the order. Players with less of these skills tend to end up further down in the lineup.
3. Line on an American football field that separates the field of play from out of bounds, where coaches occupy during the game

Answer: Sideline

The sideline is the area where all of the coaches and players not currently playing reside; this includes reserve players and team personnel such as trainers, doctors, and the team's starters on whatever side is not on the field (i.e. if the offense is on the field, the defense is on the sideline).
4. In tennis, this is the line that a player must stand behind before serving

Answer: Baseline

The baseline on a tennis court is at the extreme end of the playing area. It runs parallel to, and is 39 feet from the net; it's where the server must stand behind as he or she is serving. The serve is the first action of a tennis game.
5. A boundary set on a tennis court indicating where the ball must land in to begin a tennis point

Answer: Service Line

The service line is 21 feet from the net, and is located at the back end of the service box, which is the area in which the ball from a serve must land to be valid and in play. The width of the service box measures 13.5 feet wide. If the first serve of the game is out of the service box then a fault is called by a linesman or umpire, and a second serve is allowed. If the second serve fails to go into the box, the server loses the point.
6. A baseball batter with a batting average under .200.

Answer: Mendoza Line

The term comes from Mario Mendoza, who played nine seasons from 1974-1982. Mendoza was a good fielding shortstop, but in five of his nine seasons, he hit under .200, which is seen as an offensive liability. Some of Mendoza's Pittsburgh Pirates teammates were joking around with Kansas City Royals' legend George Brett when he was having a slow start to the 1979 season and told him that if he wasn't careful, his batting average would "fall below the Mendoza line." This is thought to be the origin of the term.

Mendoza finished his career with a .215 average, which is still not productive, but nonetheless above the line that was coined because of him.
7. Delineation on a basketball court that awards one extra point outside the line versus inside it

Answer: Three-Point Line

The three-point line is an arced line around the basket, which varies in length by league, but at the National Basketball Association (NBA) level, it measures 23 feet, 9 inches straight away, and 22 inches in the corner from the basket. A shot behind the line awards three points if successful, while a shot inside the arc counts for two points, unless one is shooting a free throw, which awards a team one point if successful.

The NBA first started using the three-point line during the 1979-80 season.
8. Line on a basketball court that divides two sides of the court

Answer: Half-Court Line

An NBA court measures 94 feet in length, so the half-court line is 47 feet from the baseline of the court. After the opposing team scores a basket, the guard of the offensive team starts behind the baseline and passes the ball to a teammate on the other side of the line; once the ball is back in play, the offense has eight seconds to advance the ball past the half-court line before a penalty, which results in a turnover. Also, once the offense advances beyond half-court, the ball can not go behind the half-court line or that also results in a turnover.
9. When you cross this line in American football, you score a touchdown

Answer: Goal Line

Several sports have goal lines, such as soccer and hockey; on an American football field in particular, there are two goal lines, each 100 yards apart at opposite ends of the field. The objective of the game is to advance the ball to the or past the opposing team's defending goal line -- if any part of the ball crosses the goal line while an offensive player is in the possession of the ball, it is a touchdown and is worth six points. If a team's offense is tackled in behind their own defending goal line, it is deemed a safety, and the opposing team receives two points and will retain possession of the ball after a kickoff.
10. Boundary in a baseball game extending from home plate down the first base and third base lines that separates the field of play from dead ball area

Answer: Foul Line

The foul line in baseball delineates the field of play from the dead-ball area. The field of play begins at home plate, and the lines extend from each side of the plate: one straight line from home plate which extends down the first base line and terminates at the wall at right field, and one straight line from home plate down the third base line which terminates at the wall at left field.

In Major League Baseball, the lines are made from white chalk. If any part of the ball touches the white chalk lines, it is a fair ball; any ball to the left of the chalk on the third base side (or the right side of the first base side) is a foul ball, and play is stopped until the pitcher is presented a ball and the umpire declares play is live again.
