Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. UK FOOTBALL - Known more for the transgressions he committed rather than prevented, who was Bury FC's former police officer mascot Robbie the Bobby named after?

Answer: Sir Robert Peel

Introduced in 1997, Robbie the Bobby was a popular fixture at games for over twenty seasons. In 2001, he made national news after being involved in three separate red card incidents where he mooned Stoke City fans, ripped the ears off the Peterborough mascot and had to be restrained by stewards after an intense brawl with the Cardiff City mascot. The Bury bad boy would be replaced by a cooler customer called Peeler the dog in 2018, also named after Sir Robert Peel, the Bury-born founder of the Metropolitan Police force, and not another fictitious club legend.

2. The supporters of which national Rugby Union team have been known to bring live cockerel mascots to matches?

Answer: France

The cockerel is one of France's national symbols, and used as a mascot across multiple sports. A live cockerel on the pitch released by French fans has been a frequent sight at the annual Six Nations matches in Europe. The Welsh bring large models of leeks.

3. Cyril the Swan, the mascot of Swansea City, was known for controversial behaviour, released a record, and also appeared in what traditional British winter entertainment?

Answer: Pantomime

Cyril the Swan became mascot of Swansea City in 1998. He was voted best mascot by the "Match of the Day" magazine. He became known for some controversial behaviour, notably a fight with Millwall's Zampa the Lion, where he removed his rival's head. Cyril released the single "Nice Swan Cyril" in 1998. In 1999 he appeared at Swansea's Grand Theatre in the pantomime "Aladdin" as the pet of the Chinese Emperor.

4. Hartlepool United's mascot, H'Angus the Monkey, came from a story about the locals hanging a monkey they assumed to be a sailor from which country's navy?

Answer: France

There is a legend, probably apocryphal, that during the Napoleonic Wars, a French ship was wrecked near the English north-eastern town of Hartlepool. The only survivor was a monkey, a ship's mascot who the French sailors had dressed in uniform as a joke. The Hartlepool people had never seen a monkey or a Frenchman, and assumed it was a real sailor and hanged it. Hence people from Hartlepool became known as monkey hangers.

United used this legend to create their mascot, jokingly called H'Angus. One of the people who played H'Angus, Stuart Drummond, known for his outrageous antics during matches, ran for mayor of Hartlepool as a publicity stunt and ended up winning and serving three terms.

5. In 2020, which English Premier League club sacked its mascot, Gunnersaurus, as part of a cost-saving initiative?

Answer: Arsenal

The Arsenal official mascot Gunnersaurus was designed by an 11 year old called Peter Lovell as part of a contest. The team's nickname is The Gunners. He designed a seven foot tall green dinosaur wearing an Arsenal shirt and cap. Gunnersaurus made his debut in 1994, and was portrayed by Jerry Quy until October 2020, when the club sacked him along with other redundancies to save money during the COVID-19 suspension of matches attended by spectators. After a public outcry, and with Arsenal star Mesut Özil offering to pay My Quy's salary, Gunnersaurus was reinstated in November 2020.

6. Down to the antipodes and Aussie Rules Football - What is the Marsupialian mascot for the Freemantle Dockers, NSW?

Answer: Dokka the Quokka

Dokka the Quokka is one of the mascots of the Fremantle Football Club, also known as the Dockers. A quokka is a small marsupial found mainly in Western Australia and famous for its friendly, smile-like expression. Introduced in 2022, Dokka was created to give the club a mascot connected to local wildlife and to appeal to younger fans. Because quokkas are found almost nowhere else in the world, Dokka has become a symbol of both the club and Western Australia. That said, given that as of mid-2026 the Dockers are one of the only teams NEVER to have won a premiership, perhaps they should have gone with a salt water crocodile...I mean Dokka the Crockka...writes itself!

Dokka is joined by two other Dockers mascots: Johnny 'The Doc' Docker and Jenny Docker. Johnny is a blond surfer-style character who has represented the club since 2003e. Jenny, introduced in 2012, is Johnny's younger sister.

7. Mascots aren't just random blokes in costume. What real-life majestic creature is the mascot of Italian club Lazio?

Answer: Eagle

While the other three alternative answers might trigger some health and safety violations, Rome-based football club SS Lazio are in much safer hands with Flaminia the eagle, who flies around the stadium before home games and returns to her handler.

Flaminia replaced Olimpia the eagle in November 2025 after her fifteen year reign as Lazio mascot was ended due to her handler, Juan Bernabe, being fired for posting explicit pictures of himself online. He would also be caught making a fascist salute while chanting in support of Benito Mussolini in 2021, proving Lazio clearly draw the line at dodgy pictures and not dangerous ideologies.

Olimpia also made a few mistakes of her own, but none as inexcusable. In one game against Fiorentina in 2023 she landed in the away end, which for some reason really riled up the away fans. If you've never seen anyone flip the bird at an actual bird before... well I have.

8. After the retirement of Hennes VIII due to ill health, Hennes IX debuted as the mascot of FC Köln in August 2019. What is he?

Answer: Goat

FC Köln (Cologne) has had a goat as its mascot since 1950, which was two years after the football club was founded. Hennes I was given by a circus to the club, and was named after FC Köln's player/coach, Hennes Weisweiler. He performed mascot duties until he died in 1966. Successive goats have served the club and been given the same name. Hennes IX is a goat from the German Improved Fawn (Bunte Deutsche Edelziege) breed, born in February 2018 at Cologne zoo.

9. The Brazil football team, reflecting its yellow jerseys, has what sort of creature as its mascot?

Answer: Angry canary

After the national humiliation of losing its home FIFA World Cup in 1950 to Uruguay, by being defeated at its Maracană Stadium, the Brazil football team tried to change its luck by no longer wearing its traditional all white kit. From the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland they wore a new uniform that used the colours of the national flag - yellow jerseys with green trim, blue shorts, and white socks. The team acquired the nickname Canarinho, or "Little Canary", and a mascot by that name. Their luck seemed to change, with World Cup wins in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002.

The next World Cup to be held in Brazil was in 2014, and, once again, the team was humiliated, losing 7-1 to Germany in the semi-final at Belo Horizonte. For the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Brazil redesigned its mascot, Canarinho, to one with a frowning. determined look, which was intended to show how seriously Brazilians take the game. The mascot became a sensation, earning it the popular name of Canarinho Pistola (Angry Canary). A man dressed as Canarinho represents the team at matches, rousing the crowd.

10. If you go to the city of Nagoya in Japan you will have a great time watching their soccer and also their mascot, Grampus-kun...but what exactly IS this mascot?

Answer: A whale

So, Nagoya's Grampus-kun is a whale, an orca to be specific. This is NOT because - like in the case of the Hartford Whalers or the Tayo Whales baseball team in Yokohama - the team was sponsored by a whaling company, but because of the shachihoko, gargoyles that resemble Singapore's Merlions, that are on top of Nagoya castle.

Grampus-kun is the traditional black on white of an orca, but because this is Japan and we simply CAN'T leave well enough alone with our mascots, he has a family.
Grampako-chan - his wife - also black and white, but with a pink bow on her head and dimples.
Grampus-kun Jr. - his son, also black and white, but with a defiant sneer.
and...
Grara - his pink daughter, who has cute eyelashes and a heart on her back.
