Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character created especially for this show appears at the beginning?

Answer: Kim Wexler

It's 2010. The scene is black and white (oddly enough). It's Florida. There is an attractive woman standing by a kitchen bench...
It's Kim!
But she is hardly recognisable. Long dark hair, bags under her eyes, not as confident as she used to be. We, of course, know why. Six years ago, the poor woman had a gangster commit a brutal murder right in front of her. And other gangsters threatened her to keep silent.
Kim's been trying to make a new life for herself ever since. She is no longer a lawyer. She works for a Florida sprinkler company. Her work friends often eat with her, but she is not as chatty as they. No one seems to notice she has a perpetually haunted look.
2. Who is the mysterious person from Kim's past who telephones on November 12th?

Answer: Jimmy/Saul

Kim and her work chums have been making preparations for the 12th of November. It's their receptionist's birthday, whom they're very fond of her.
Little does Kim know, someone else with the same birthday is about to telephone. Nor does the man phoning know the receptionist who puts him through also has a birthday today. He says his name is "Viktor St-Claire."
The receptionist doesn't see Kim turn pale at that name.
Kim quickly puts up the shades in her office, and, hands shaking, picks up the phone. Why on earth is JIMMY of all people calling?!
3. What is the unexpected consequence of the unexpected phone-call?

Answer: Kim flies to Albuquerque

Kim cannot believe this! Her ex-husband, an infamous wanted fugitive for months, actually PHONING her? (It's not clear if she recalls it's his birthday, or not.)
Kim whispers nervously, "What...do you want?" Her ex simply replies it's been a while. He is very cheerful, acting like nothing's wrong. No idea poor Kim looks like she's seen a ghost. She is far from pleased to hear from him and is NOT interested in "catching up".
McGill/Goodman brags he is "still getting away it". He acts like he doesn't care about all the people who suffered because of him and Walter White.
Kim whispers "You...shouldn't...be..calling" and she tries to talk Jimmy into turning himself in; her heart of gold giving in. She adds, "I don't know what kind of life you've been living. But it can't be much."
Jimmy/Saul scoffs "YOU preaching to ME?" and makes fun of Kim's guilty conscience. He sarcastically suggests she turn HERSELF in. He reminds her Mike and all the other gangsters are now dead. So why not?
Her loathsome ex is still rambling on, and Kim cuts in. "I'm glad you're alive," and quickly hangs up.
But "Gene"'s phone call has consequences. Kim flies to New Mexico.
4. How did this episode get its name?

Answer: Both these reasons

Poor Kim. After six years, her past has finally caught up with her. She's been spending the day in her old hometown Albuquerque. Now she is sobbing hysterically on the bus ride back to airport.
Why? She returned to New Mexico to confess everything. She went to a very familiar courthouse to see Susanne Ericsen (Ericsen has since been promoted to District Attorney). The DA is no doubt astonished by Kim's written confession. Then Kim went to see someone else she hasn't seen since 2004: Howard's widow Cheryl.
All these years, everyone has been convinced Hamlin was secretly on drugs and took his own his life. But Kim's signed statement reveals the truth. Cheryl gasps. She cannot believe this! "Howard..." she stammers "was MURDERED?"
Far from being happy Howard's name is finally cleared, Cheryl is furious. She threatens to sue Kim for every penny she has. Another reason for Kim's out-of-control sobbing on the bus.
EASTER EGG: At the bus stop, there is a service to Alaska. In the previous episode, Saul was told Jesse Pinkman was hiding in Mexico. But we know Jesse really went to Alaska.
5. What is "Gene" doing in this episode?

Answer: Burglarizing a dying man's home

McGill is clearly still addicted to crime after all this time. He has grown sick of his worthless existence in Omaha. He now thinks of himself as a mini-crime boss, overseeing Jeff and Buddy's scams. So when Buddy refuses to rob a dying man (pointing out they've already made plenty of money) "Gene" gets Jeff to drive him to the man's house, instead.

He breaks in, sees their victim is still asleep, and sneaks upstairs to help himself...then the man wakes up (a toilet flushes). Uh-oh!
6. How does Jeff the cab driver distract the police?

Answer: Drives into another car

Jeff is wishing he hadn't driven their impulsive leader here tonight! Waiting outside of the drugged man's house as ordered, he gulps. A police car has suddenly pulled up! As it happens, they are just taking a break from night patrol. No idea a crime is being committed. But Jeff panics! Thinking quickly, he drives his cab straight into another parked car.
Jimmy/Gene witnesses it. So he quickly runs off and catches a bus home.
7. Saul/Gene knocks a man unconscious with an urn.

Answer: False

He is about to. But (luckily for the poor man!) he nods off just as the unknown intruder is sneaking up behind him. "Gene" seems to have no boundaries anymore. Not only is he robbing an unfortunate cancer victim, he was going to use the urn containing the poor man's dog Rusty's ashes to bash his head in.
McGill has gotten careless. Not only has he stuffed his pockets with the man's expensive watches, he broke the door and left glass everywhere. Evidence.
The victim is played by Kevin Sussman. He plays the morbid comic-book store owner Stuart in the popular "Big Bang Theory".
8. Which arch-criminal from the "Breaking Bad" pilot enters Saul's office after Kim leaves?

Answer: Emilio Koyama

Younger Emilio is no less nasty and intimidating. Case in point, Francesca asks him for his paperwork. He growls "I don't do no paperwork!" She doesn't argue and quickly moves away.
In 2008, Emilio is gassed to death by a rising drug-lord named Walter White. Walt's foolish assistant (Emilio's ex-buddy Jesse) tries to dispose of Emilio's corpse in his upstairs bathtub with acid.
Naturally, the acid eats through Emilio, and the bath, and Jesse's ceiling. VERY messy results! So the two meth-cooks have to clean everything up, including Emilio's entrails. Oh well, at least no one can deny Emilio had guts.
9. Jeff phones his father after he is arrested.

Answer: False

He actually phones "Gene" and calls him "Dad". Although Saul/Gene got away from the crime scene, the poor drugged man noticed the missing watches and broken glass. He calls out to the police officers who are attending to Jeff after the crash. Although Jeff doesn't have any stolen items in his car, the police put two and two together.
McGill promises to call Marion and get this sorted out. For obvious reasons, he would prefer staying away from police stations. But when he phones Marion, he inadvertently reveals he's familiar with New Mexico law. (Marion grumbles Jeff has been arrested once before in New Mexico.)
Marion is puzzled. Didn't her new friend Gene once say he had never been to Albuquerque? Something isn't right here...
10. At the end of this episode, which future member of the Albuquerque drug underworld does Kim meet in 2004?

Answer: Jesse Pinkman

Her divorce papers finalized, Kim sadly steps out of her now-ex-husband's office. It's dark and pouring with rain. Sighing sadly, she reaches for a cigarette. A teenaged boy standing nearby asks for one. Kim thinks "Why not?" and walks over to join him.
It's none other than Jesse Pinkman. He's waiting outside for his good friend Emilio (no idea Emilio will try to kill him in four years time!). Jesse once told Walter White that Emilio had hired Saul Goodman twice. The second time took place in the "Breaking Bad" pilot episode, of course. But this rainy night is Emilio's first visit.
Clever critics have remarked this was Jesse's last appearance on TV. But it's also his FIRST i.e. 2004 Jesse is younger than any other appearance.
