Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At what point in this episode do the authorities finally catch Jimmy/Gene/Saul?

Answer: At the start

The moment "Gene" has feared for months has finally arrived. The police know who he is and WHERE he is. All his own stupid fault. He dashes home, grabs a shoebox containing diamonds, family photos, and other things. Then he hurries outside...but the police are everywhere! He runs, dodges, hides, but it's no good.

Then he sees a dumpster and hides inside...ignoring the stench. Stuck in smelly muck, he retrieves a cheap mobile phone (the same kind he used to sell). He is desperately trying to phone a certain vacuum-cleaner guy in New Mexico.

But then...he accidentally spills all his diamonds! Before he can retrieve them...the police bang on the dumpster. And McGill/Goodman emerges - hands up. (Presumably local garbage-collectors got rich later...)
2. Which of the following people do NOT appear in Jimmy/Saul's flashbacks?

Answer: Marco

During his "holiday" in Omaha, "Gene" has had plenty of flashbacks from his misspent life. Especially - for obvious reasons - the eventful days of 2002 - 2004. But all this episode's flashbacks have one thing in common: time-travel. Or, as Walter White put it, "regrets". Saul/Jimmy had asked Walt and Mike at different points what they would do with a time machine. Mike finally admitted he would go back to the day he took his first bribe (not least because turning dirty led to the murder of his son). Walt said he regretted leaving a company he'd founded with friends (they eventually became billionaires).

But Chuck (who supplied his brother's copy of "The Time Machine") had said something different. "If you don't like where you're heading, there's no shame in going back and changing your path." (This, of course, was back when the brothers were getting on.) From 2002 onwards, Jimmy had every right to despise his brother.

But now those wise words may finally do him some good...
3. Which "Breaking Bad" character confronts Saul Goodman?

Answer: Marie Schrader

Poor Marie lost her husband Hank about 10 months ago. She looks to aged 10 YEARS since. She has accompanied the DEA top brass to Omaha to finally meet the lawyer who made Walt's misdeeds possible.
Goodman never actually met the diabolical Heisenberg's sister-in-law. But he recognises Marie, so he probably saw her on TV. Face-to-face with her least-favourite person, she remarks "They tell me they found you in a garbage dumpster. Well that makes sense."
Even though her husband's body was finally found and her despicable brother-in-law's dead, Marie is far from happy. She adds that neither is Steve Gomez's widow Bianca. Marie does NOT want the prosecutors to negotiate. But crafty Saul has a trick up his sleeve.
4. How does Kim find out her ex-husband has been arrested?

Answer: Ericsen phones her

After her tearful visit to Albuquerque, Kim has been considering her old vocation. She goes into a legal clinic and asks for work. She performs their tasks very well, despite not being a lawyer for years.
But one night she gets a call from the Albuquerque DA of all people. Susanne fills her in. Jimmy/Saul has been arrested in Omaha and is on his way back to New Mexico - in handcuffs. And he claims to have incriminating information about Kim!
Goodman is expected to get off easy. He lied to Marie and the prosecutors. He described truthfully the night Walt and Jesse kidnapped him and threatened to kill him unless he got their friend Badger out of trouble. We know that's true...but then he insisted he only ever worked for them because he feared for his safety. Even though Walt's dead, "Gene" stayed in hiding because he was afraid Jesse and co might still find him.
The Albuquerque DA scoffed, "You expect jurors to buy that?"
Saul's misery suddenly turned into a crafty smirk. He reminded them he only needs ONE juror to believe that, and he goes free. The ADA hadn't thought of that...
5. Which lawyer Albuquerque from Saul's past does he contact for help?

Answer: Bill Oakley

Last month, "Gene" learnt his old "friend" Bill the prosecutor is now a defence lawyer. Bill more or less took over Saul Goodman's criminal law monopoly. When Oakley hears the voice from his past on the phone...he drops his papers. The stunned attorney eventually agrees to come to Omaha to represent his old rival.

As it turns out, Oakley will be present at one of the most memorable trials of his career. Once in Omaha, we see why Goodman wanted Bill. Bill can provide inside info about the prosecuting Albuquerque ADA Castellano. For instance: he's never lost a case. So once Castellano is reminded only one juror needs to believe Saul's lies, his confidence drops.

It looks like they WILL have to negotiate with Goodman after all. Marie angrily storms out.
6. What dark secret from his past does Saul Goodman try to use to reduce his sentence?

Answer: Howard's murder

Saul adds "As Steve Jobs used to say: one more thing."
[NOTE: since it's December 2010, some consider this a plot hole; Steve Jobs the founder of Apple Computers actually died in 2011. But when Saul said "used to say", he didn't speak in the past tense because he thought Jobs had died. He was simply repeating a decades-old celebrity quote.]
Goodman starts telling them about a prominent Albuquerque attorney who disappeared years ago...but the prosecutors and DEA just snort. "You're talking about Howard Hamlin!"
The defendant's cocky expression vanishes. How did they know?!
They tell him not to bother; his ex-wife Kim already confessed everything last month. "You've got nothing left to sell." they growl impatiently. He now has no choice but to sign the paper in front of him. It states he will serve a seven-year jail sentence. But it's better than a life sentence, he muses.
7. What becomes of Jeff the crooked taxi driver?

Answer: We are not told

As the authorities fly their prisoner out from Nebraska to New Mexico, Saul looks out the window miserably. Thinking of all the people whose lives his "fun" has ruined. Including Jeff and Marion. And not just in Omaha...
He asks Bill about Kim. Oakley explains she will probably not be charged for any 2004 misdeeds. But Hamlin's widow is looking for lawyers to help her sue Kim "for everything". (Bill grumbles "Not that she bothered to call me.")
He doesn't notice the wheels turning in Saul's head. Maybe there's something he can do to help Kim? And return to being Jimmy, the nice guy - goodbye Saul the selfish crook.
He tells Bill to tell the authorities he has more to say about Howard's death. To do with Kim. Bill frowns curiously. What could Goodman/McGill mean? But he does as his "client" asks. (Saul's representing himself, Oakley is actually an "Advisory Counsel".)
Saul's admission eventually spreads around the New Mexico legal community. Which prompts Susanne to call Kim. Uh-oh! The latter nervously flies back to New Mexico. Just when she thought things couldn't get any worse...
8. Finally about to sentenced in court, Saul Goodman confesses what about Kim?

Answer: He made up lies about her

For the first time since 2002, James McGill, aka Saul Goodman, is back in court as a defendant. He is led inside wearing his trademark outlandish suit...and sees Kim sitting at the back. They hardly recognise one another at first. Kim is worried what on earth Jimmy is about to tell them about her. She's very nervous but tries not to show it.
Goodman also spots Hank and Steve's widows. The old saying "if looks could kill..." is appropriate here. They are not happy he's manipulated the DEA into giving him a light seven-year sentence.
This hearing is supposed to be just a formality. But Jimmy/Saul has a surprise for everyone. He whispers to Bill "It's showtime." Bill has heard that a lot over the years, but he can't guess what's about to happen.
Judge Samantha Small lets Saul speak. Oakley, the DEA, Marie, and Bianca, and Kim cannot believe their ears! Goodman (who asks to be called "McGill" now) confesses everything. Contradicting the claim he made in Omaha, he boasts about helping Walter White. "I wasn't there when the meth was cooked or sold. I didn't witness any of the murders. But I sure knew it was happening! I was MORE than a willing participant! I helped Walter White run his drug empire, and I made MILLIONS! He couldn't've done it without me...and agents Schrader and Gomez - and a whole lot of other people - would still be alive.
"Oh - I lied to the government about Kim Wexler's involvement in Howard Hamlin's murder. I just wanted to see her today."
The judge warns him he is contradicting his sworn statement about being forced to work for Walt. But the others implore her to let him go on. No one doubts Goodman is finally speaking the truth. Especially about Kim's innocence.
In other words: the Jimmy we used to know and love has fallen on his sword. He has effectively ensured no legal action can be taken against Kim (from Cheryl Hamlin or anyone else). She internally breathes a huge sigh of relief! She looks at her old friend with respect and love, like she used to.
But, needless-to-say, Jimmy is going to jail for a lot longer than seven years.
9. Jimmy confesses everything about his dead brother Chuck.

Answer: True

The judge angrily all but bangs her gavel down. She wants the defendant to sit down and shut up - now! But the DEA assures her they are happy for the confessing felon to continue. This is unprecedented!
Jimmy finally admits the truth about Chuck's 2003 suicide. Chuck was forced to leave his own firm and, shortly after, set his home and himself on fire. Jimmy had "accidentally" told the insurance company about Chuck's imagined allergy to electricity, his breakdown in court, etc. Which eventually led to Howard's getting rid of Chuck, and the suicide.
At the back, Kim's face shows no reaction. But her ex's words only serve to confirm how right she was to leave him! She often wondered why Jimmy wasn't as distraught as a grieving brother should be. He must have considered Chuck's death a just revenge.
At the start of "Better Call Saul", everyone felt sorry for Chuck. Stuck indoors, scared of electricity. But he turned out to be so manipulative and two-faced. Even Chuck's actor Michael McKean has stated "Chuck was a jerk".
Chuck accused Jimmy of stabbing him in the back, being a terrible brother, an amoral lawyer, etc. But was Chuck really in any position to talk?
10. What unexpected person or persons from Jimmy's past visit him in jail?

Answer: Kim

During the Omaha negotiations, Jimmy snorted if he gave them half a chance they would throw him into "Montrose ADX" (nicknamed "The Alcatraz of The Rockies.") Now they have - for 86 years.
On the plus side, it seems Montrose's newest arrival has a cult following. On the bus, inmates chant "Bet - ter - Call - Saul! Bet - ter - Call - Saul!"
Working in the kitchens one day (memories of a certain Cinnabon coming back) Jimmy has another pleasant surprise. Kim's come to visit! She's wearing a familiar lawyer outfit. Apparently she's quit the irrigation job.
She and her ex share a cigarette and say very little. This is her way of saying "Thank you." She knows he will probably be in jail the rest of his life and did it to save her. They won't see one another again. But at least they're parting amicably.
