Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the main characters in 'Blockbuster' is a lady most comedy fans will recognise as being Amy Santiago in Brooklyn 99. Played by Melissa Fumero, which character is she in 'Blockbuster'?

Answer: Eliza Walker

Melissa Fumero plays Eliza Walker in 'Blockbuster'. In the show, Eliza is a forties-something, extremely dedicated mother. Once an attendee at a prestigious university, she dropped out to marry her high school sweetheart. After raising her family, she goes back to work, finding employment at the last Blockbuster store in the world.

Melissa, who was born in America in 1982, made her professional acting debut in 2004 after attending New York University, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama. From 2013 to 2021, she played Amy Santiago, the love interest of Jake Peralta, in 153 episodes of 'Brooklyn 99.' Melissa has also appeared in several movies as well as 'The Mentalist,' 'CSI NY' and 'Gossip Girl.'
2. When Timmy Yoon, the manager/franchise owner gets behind in rent, what local award does he try to win?

Answer: The Itsy Bizzie Award

The character of Timmy Yoon is played by Randall Park, a man you might be familiar with if you are a fan of 'The Office,' since he was 'Asian Tim,' Jim Halpert's prank replacement.

In episode 4 of 'Blockbuster,' we discover Timmy owes a significant amount of back-rent on the business because corporate has cut all ties with the store. Not only are Timmy and his staff in danger of being evicted, but unfortunately the person Timmy owes rent to is his best friend, Percy Scott (played by J.B. Smoove). Percy, who owns the entire strip mall the Blockbuster business is located on, doesn't want to upset Timmy, but explains he has bills of his own to pay, so Timmy has to either pay up or move on.

In a desperate attempt to raise some funds, Timmy tries to win the Itsy Bizzie small business award, because the award comes with a $5,000 prize. Spoiler alert: Timmy doesn't win, in fact he gets blacklisted. He ends up selling his car to keep the business afloat for a few extra months.
3. What happens to the character of Timmy when he gets overly stressed?

Answer: He gets a white streak in his hair

Every time Timmy gets overly stressed he develops a thick white streak in his hair, which necessitates him having to wear a hat. The streak appears to come and go during the series. (I am unable to find any medical information regarding a condition where hair develops a white streak which then disappears. Timmy might have a condition called poliosis, which is caused by an absence of melanin in the hair.

However, my understanding is that poliosis is a permanent condition, so perhaps we will simply put it down to 'creative license'!).
4. We discover early on that Timmy has a huge crush on Eliza. To try to get Eliza out of his thoughts, Timmy is encouraged by Percy to go out on a low-pressure date with a woman they both know: Rene. How many women though, end up on the date with Timmy?

Answer: Three

As mentioned, in a desperate attempt to get Eliza out of his thoughts - primarily because Eliza is already married - Timmy ends up agreeing to go on a very low pressure date with his hairdresser, Rene. They are to meet up at a trivia contest at a pub, something Timmy is more than happy to do, since he is a fan of trivia quiz nights.

He and Rene are winning the trivia when two more women turn up, claiming they have a date with Timmy. Confused at first, Timmy sees his friend Percy and Percy's daughter, Kayla (who is also one of Timmy's staff members) chortling in a corner booth. He realises what has happened and has to explain to his 'dates' that his friends have set this all up, and that he is actually not yet ready for dating.
5. Carlos Herrera, a young, male bisexual employee, has hopes he can emulate Quentin Tarantino's career trajectory by working at Blockbuster. Hoping to earn a degree, what subject matter is he actually studying?

Answer: Accounting

Carlos, played by Tyler Alvarez, works at Blockbuster because he wants to be a film director. Though he is a film aficionado, he is from an immigrant family who have big dreams for his future. As such, and despite his dreams, Carlos decides to try and get a degree in accounting in order to make his parents proud.

Tyler Alvarez is perhaps best known for his role as Diego Rueda in Nickelodeon's sitcom 'Every Witch Way.'
6. Timmy is forced to leave doing inventory/stocktaking at the store to rush over to the retirement home his divorced parents live in. When he gets there, what does he find his mother sitting in?

Answer: A stolen wheelchair

Timmy, who is just starting on a big night of doing inventory with the rest of the team, gets an urgent call to see his parents. He rushes to the retirement home to find that the 'emergency' is that his mother has ratted out his father for trying to make a revenue stream by selling ill-gotten ice-cream. Timmy then notices his mother is sitting in a wheelchair.

When Timmy asks about this, she claims she is unable to walk as a result of the years of emotional duress her husband has put her through.

She also claims the wheelchair is hers, even though it has the name 'Sheila' on it. In the next scene we see an old woman, clearly Sheila, crawling painfully across the floor.
7. Eliza went to Harvard University. How long did she attend the university?

Answer: One semester

Eliza did attend Harvard, but only for one semester. She dropped out of the uni to start a family with her husband and high-school sweetheart, Aaron, who is played by Leonard Robinson. She then starts work at Blockbuster, where she works alongside her long-time friend from high-school, Timmy.

Despite only completing one term at Harvard, Eliza is quite keen on dropping the 'H' word at every opportunity.
8. Kayla, Percy's daughter, decides she wants to move out, since living with her mother is apparently like living in a 'police-state.' She is immediately scammed by a ruthless person who gets her to send US$100 by Western Union as a pre-deposit for what?

Answer: To see an apartment

Kayla Scott (played by Kamaia Fairburn) starts to look at moving somewhere on her own, because her mother is always on at her: eg. asking how her day is, and commenting on Tik Tok with a star-eyed emojii. When Kayla informs her co-workers that she's already paid the pre-deposit of US$100 to see an apartment, her co-workers are alarmed.

They tell her that she's being scammed and that no-one is charged for simply looking at an apartment. Kayla responds to this by saying she isn't going to let 'jealous-haters' get in her way of living in a really cool apartment.

She later discovers, of course, that she has, indeed, been scammed.
9. It's episode 10, it's Christmastime and Timmy has big plans. Timmy's plans go very awry, but eventually the store is overwhelmed with customers. How does this happen?

Answer: A solar storm knocks out the internet

At the beginning of episode 10, we see a news report saying that a solar storm is expected that could potentially knock out the internet and cell phone service. The storm does hit later that night, turning the sky a vivid blue/green colour. Timmy, who has had a rough day, decides enough is enough and leaves the store to go and drown his sorrows.

When Timmy returns, there are cars parked haphazardly everywhere. It turns out the storm has taken out the internet/streaming services. Timmy suddenly realises that, tonight at least, he is sitting on a goldmine, since the general populace now has no choice but to watch DVDs.
10. In episode 10, Aaron decides he is going to re-propose to Eliza, asking her to re-marry him. He does this at Blockbuster in the break room. Who does he hire to help with the ambience of the moment?

Answer: A trio of a cappella singers

Aaron hires an a cappella group called Jingle Bills. The three men in it are all either called Bill, or have changed their name to Bill, since this is a prerequisite apparently of being allowed in the group. They sing 'On Bended Knee' by Boyz II Men as Aaron gets on a bended knee to re-propose to Eliza.

Spoiler alert: Eliza turns Aaron down as she has realised that she has feelings for someone else: Timmy.
