Now wheelchair bound, he was offered the position of special department consultant.
The series ended in 1975. Several, now well known actors/actresses have appeared in the programme, including Harrison Ford, David Carradine, William Shatner, Ingrid Pitt and Susan Saint James.

The Lieutenant has a scruffy appearance, wearing a dirty overcoat and in general looks untidy. His character has us believing that he is a bit thick or not too bright in the brain department. However we soon learn that the detective is not what he seems! The programme produced seven seasons and ran until 1978. "Columbo" also had a run of TV movies and a TV special. One of the best crime dramas on TV, and a world wide hit.
