No, in fact they were sisters. Mrs. Garret was the elder of the two.

Mrs Garret, or Mrs G as many of the girls called her, was a good cook. She was especially known for her strudel, which was mentioned in several episodes.

Mrs Thornwell was the oldest-living graduate of Eastland. She was in her 80's and wanted to leave her fortune to someone or something worthy and she chose Jo. When Mrs Thornwell began demanding that Jo make huge personal changes, Jo balked and the former decided to change her will to not leave it to Jo after all.

The Eastland and Bates schools had several social events together, such as dances and camping. The boys from Bates were featured in several episodes and mentioned in even more.
