Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Every Halloween season, the cop comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" features its annual Halloween Heist episode in which the precinct's detectives successfully steal a designated item before the deadline and thus win what title?

Answer: "Amazing Human/Genius"

"HalloVeen" was the title of the season 5 episode 4 Halloween Heist contest. Andy Samberg's Jake teamed up with Amy (Melissa Fumero) to steal a championship belt inscribed with "Amazing Human/Genius." Captain Holt, however, insists on calling it a "championship cummerbund" because, pointing out that it is worn around the waist with formal wear, not held up like a wrestling belt.

The series finale in the 8th season was a two-part episode, called "The Last Day," and featured one final Halloween heist.

The ending, however, did leave us with the impression that despite the characters going their separate ways, they would resume the traditional heist antics around Halloween.
2. In season 8 episode 6 of the show "Friends" we watched "The One with the Halloween Party," in which Monica and Chandler host a party, and Phoebe finds herself becoming attracted to her twin sister's boyfriend, played by what Oscar-winning actor?

Answer: Sean Penn

Ross dressed up as a potato satellite called "Spud-nik," Chandler was a pink bunny, Monica was Catwoman, Joey dressed like Chandler (a vest and slacks, even doing impressions of Chandler), and Rachel wore a figure-flattering dress to show off her figure before her pregnancy starts showing more obviously.

Phoebe dressed as Supergirl, and meets her twin sister Ursula's fiancé, Eric, a second-grade teacher, played by Sean Penn. Phoebe discovers that Ursula has been lying to Eric about everything, lying about being a teacher, serving in the Peace Corps, and building houses in Uruguay. Phoebe can't help herself and tells Eric the truth, and in so doing, develops a crush on him.
3. "Halloween" is the title of season 5 episode 3 of "Frasier" in which Niles hosts a Halloween party benefiting the Library Association, requiring guests to dress as literary figures. Who did Niles and Frasier dress as, respectively?

Answer: Niles as Cyrano de Bergerac, Frasier as Geoffrey Chaucer

With Niles dressed as the French poet and swordsman Cyrano de Bergerac (sporting an enormous nose) and Frasier as Geoffrey Chaucer, the author of "The Canterbury Tales", the episode was loaded with comedic misunderstandings and mix-ups. A rumor spreads that Frasier's assistant Roz (dressed as O from "Story of O") might be pregnant, which Daphne (dressed as The Wife of Bath from "The Canterbury Tales") overhears, and mistakenly assumes that Frasier is the father. And that gossipy tidbit starts spreading throughout the party. Frasier becomes utterly perplexed by the comments people start making.
4. On October 28, 2010, "Costume Contest" (season 7, episode 6) was the Halloween episode of the American version of "The Office". Who won the costume contest?

Answer: Oscar, dressed as "a rational consumer"

The whole office got unduly excited when they thought that there was a prize of a Scranton-Wilkes-Barre coupon book advertising more than $15,000 in savings. Most misunderstood, thinking the coupon book itself was worth $15,000. Oscar became annoyed over their misunderstanding, and so gave up on a costume and declared that he was dressed as "a rational consumer", essentially not wearing a costume at all.

He wound up winning, though, because he received votes from Kelly, who voted for him because she thought he was least likely to win, thus improving her own chances. Ryan, who votes for the underdog, and Creed, who thought Oscar was wearing a very good Edward James Olmos costume, also voted for Oscar.
5. Season 2, episode 6 of "Modern Family" began the tradition of that show's annual Halloween episodes. This episode reveals to us that which of the show's characters is/are obsessed with Halloween, and creating a spooky Halloween house for the occasion?

Answer: Claire Dunphy

Claire goes overboard getting the house ready to become a haunted attraction and scare the neighborhood's trick-or-treaters. She assigns everyone in the family a task in her carefully planned House of Horrors, but her family members keep running into their own complications.

Her brother Mitchell runs into trouble at work when he arrives in a Spider-Man costume but no one else is dressed up; her husband Phil becomes worried that he's not exciting enough for Claire when he learns his neighbor's marriage has collapsed; Gloria is upset about being teased for her accent, and Cameron dislikes Halloween due to a childhood trauma.
6. A "Cheers" Halloween episode called "Fairy Tales Can Come True" (season 3, episode 4) featured a Halloween party at the bar with Cliff dressed as Ponce de Leon, meeting a woman dressed as what?

Answer: Tinkerbell

It was Diane (Shelley Long) who dressed as Alice in Wonderland, and Carla (Rhea Perlman) as a convict. Postal worker Cliff Claven (John Ratzenberger) meets a woman dressed as Tinkerbell, and they hit it off wonderfully. They agree to meet the following night, but as the time draws near, Cliff cowers in Sam's office, afraid she won't be attracted to him without his costume.

His buddy Norm (George Wendt) talks him into coming out, but it looks like she has stood him up. But then...she calls from a phone booth across the street and confesses she was afraid he wouldn't be attracted to her. So, they get together in the bar and dance with each other.

The actress, by the way, was played by Bernadette Birkett, George Wendt's real-life wife.
7. The season 2 episode 6 "Halloween" featured romantic entanglements between the characters Jess and Sam, Nick and his old crush Amelia, Schmidt and Cece, and Winston and Shelby. What show was this?

Answer: New Girl

In the first "New Girl" Halloween episode, Jess (Zooey Deschanel) gets a job as a zombie at a haunted house, and after feeling like she should keep things casual with her new boyfriend Sam, discovers she may be having stronger feelings for him than she expected. Nick (Jake Johnson) runs into Amelia, a woman he had a crush on in college, and Schmidt (Max Greenfield), dressed as Young Abraham Lincoln, is deeply jealous of Cece's new boyfriend, Robbie. Winston hopes Halloween will put a spark in his wobbly relationship with Shelby, and he dresses as a police officer while she arrives in a head-to-toe "Reigning Cats & Dogs" costume (covered in stuffed animals).
8. The "Abbott Elementary" Halloween episode (S2E6), titled "Candy Zombies," featured the mystery of who stole the bag of candy that the teachers had stashed away, waiting to hand them out at the end of the day. Who stole it?

Answer: Ava, the principal, dressed as Storm from the X-Men

The day quickly becomes a disaster when a student dressed as Thanos steals the candy and distributes the sweets throughout the school. The teachers then had their hands full with a school full of hyperactive children, so they abandoned their teaching duties to track down the culprit. Eventually, another student named Chad, dressed as custodian Mr. Johnson, found Baby Thanos and persuaded him to surrender.
9. You know that the CBS sitcom "Ghosts" has to have had Halloween episodes as a yearly tradition. Their first season Halloween episode aired on October 28, 2021, with Woodstone Manor owners Sam and Jay trying to protect the inn from neighborhood kids who intend to toilet paper and egg the place. In trying to defend the manor by turning off the gazebo lights, keeping the kids in the dark, who accidentally burns down the gazebo with their ability to manipulate electricity?

Answer: Thorfinn, the loud, blunt Viking

Robin, Mary, and Thomas Thorne are in the British original version of "Ghosts". Thorfinn is in the American version, a Viking who was struck by lightning about a thousand years ago, on the land where Woodstone Mansion would later be built. Perhaps this is why his ghost power is the ability to manipulate electricity.

But in trying to help Sam and Jay, his electricity power blew out the lights decorating the gazebo, causing a fire that destroyed it. The ghosts then blame the neighborhood prankster kids.

When the truth is revealed, Sam punishes the ghosts by taking away their television privileges.
10. Perhaps it is the animated show "The Simpsons" that owns the tradition of Halloween episodes with its annual "Treehouse of Horror" specials. Which of the following was NOT one of the three stories in that first "Treehouse of Horror" episode?

Answer: "Franks 'n Steins", Moe's Halloween party tuns everyone green from tainted frankfurters and beer.

"Franks 'n Steins" is made up.

"Bad Dream House" spoofed "The Amityville Horror" and "Poltergeist" with walls that bleed and objects moving on their own, and voices urging the Simpsons to kill each other.

"Hungry Are the Damned" played with the same pun that "The Twilight Zone" used. When blowing dust off the cookbook called "How to Cook Humans" it revealed the title "How to Cook for Humans". Another dust blow revealed "How to Cook Forty Humans", and the next dust off revealed, "How to Cook for Forty Humans

"The Raven" features Lisa reading the poem, "Once upon a midnight dreary..." and then James Earl Jones taking over: "...while I pondered, weak and weary," continuing the poem as the scene changes to a gloomy mansion with Homer portraying the young scholar protagonist, increasingly frustrated by Bart's "Nevermore" torments.
