The television show "Petticoat Junction" ran for seven seasons, from 1963 to 1970. It was a spin-off from the show "The Beverley Hillbillies" and, in turn, "Petticoat Junction led to the spin-off "Green Acres" and featured some of the same characters. In fact, there were a number of crossovers between the shows.
"Petticoat Junction" revolved around the family of Kate Bradley (portrayed by Bea Benaderet), a widow who was running a country hotel in Hooterville, her Uncle Joe Carson and her three daughters: Billy Jo, Bobby Jo, and Betty Jo (presumably named after Uncle Joe). Minor regular characters included Sam Drucker, proprietor of the general store, Steve Elliott, a handsome pilot/crop-duster, Charley Pratt, the train driver, and Floyd Smoot, the train conductor/fireman. Charley and Floyd ran the Cannonball train between Hooterville and Pixley. The Cannonball brought visitors to the hotel, including Homer Bedloe, vice president of the C&FW Railroad Company and a man whose mission it is to see the Cannonball's service terminated. Much of the humour involves the characters' attempts to outwit Homer's manoeuvres, as well as Uncle Joe's "get-rich-quick" schemes and his tactics for getting out of work.
The creator/writer/producer, Paul Henning, stated that the idea for the show was inspired by his wife, Ruth. "The Shady Rest was based on a real hotel in Eldon, Missouri, run by my wife's grandmother... that's where the hotel and the train and the whole setting came from, from Ruth's reminiscences of visiting her grandma". Paul Henning's daughter, Linda Kaye Henning, starred as the youngest daughter, Betty Jo. In the show, she had a romance with Steve Elliott (portrayed by Mike Minor), whom she eventually married. Life imitated art when Linda and Mike married in real life a year later.
The "Petticoat Junction" theme song was written by Curt Massey and Paul Henning, and was performed by Curt Massey. Curt Massey also appeared in a few episodes of "The Beverley Hillbillies" and "Petticoat Junction".
