Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what city did twelve teams embark on a race around the world, celebrating Oktoberfest in the first leg of "The Amazing Race 34"?

Answer: Munich

Starting the race from the front entrance of Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, Germany, a dozen new teams headed out into the city to commence their first tasks. Phil had two surprises for them at the start of this race, the first being the fact that there would be no non-elimination points at the Pit Stops found throughout the race course and the second being that their first leg would be a Scramble. With the Scramble, teams would be given three destinations, each featuring a different Oktoberfest-themed task. Teams could complete them in any order before determining the location of their Pit Stop at Friedensengel. Engaged couple Aastha and Nina were the first team eliminated.
2. Under Annasäule in Innsbruck, Austria, some teams wrapped up Leg 2 by engaging in which local activity?

Answer: Dancing

Teams drove from Munich and headed south into Tyrolean Austria in Leg 2, stopping in Innsbruck for a series of culturally-minded tasks that had them yodelling during the Road Block and choosing between ringing traditional bells or learning a traditional wedding dance for their first Detour task. Annasäule had previously been featured as a location in "The Amazing Race 3", making this the first time back in Innsbruck (for the show) since 2002. Teams checked in at the Pit Stop inside Hofburg Imperial Palace only a short run through Old Town.
3. Teams took a trip through Italy in the third leg of the race, a Mega-Leg, which had them starting in Bologna, but driving to what city, crossing the Arno River?

Answer: Florence

Leg 3 was a tough one since teams started early in the day in Bologna and were informed that they would be competing in a Mega-Leg with two legs-worth of tasks before reaching the next Pit Stop. It meant encountering a Detour and Road Block in Bologna before driving themselves into Tuscany to complete a Detour and Road Block in Florence.

The Mega-Leg ended with Rich and Dom being last to land on the mat (and getting eliminated), but not before teams delivered cheese, built a Ducati, sculpted art, and made deliveries in the city centre.
4. Visiting Petra in Leg 4, teams had the chance to complete a Detour task catering to what local animals?

Answer: Camels

Racing from the Wadi Rum Desert in the south of Jordan to the archaeological wonder of Petra in Leg 4, teams felt the heat as they passed through the Middle East. Reaching Petra, teams faced a Detour that either sent them to complete a slide puzzle or push themselves through physically-demanding chores in the service of hungry, waiting camels at a local market. For this latter task, teams had to collect bundles of hay and water from a nearby cistern and then lead a camel to their setup to get their next clue.

The leg ended at the Great Temple complex.
5. Which team was not amongst the others when the race commenced Leg 5 at the Amman Citadel?

Answer: Abby and Will

Though teams completed Leg 4 at the Petra temple complex, they were brought to the top of Jordan's capital, Amman, for Leg 5. All teams were brought to their Pit Start together to find the news from Phil; eight teams continued into Leg 5, but Abby and Will received a positive COVID-19 test result and were eliminated from the race via video call from their quarantine hotel room.

It meant that the remaining seven teams would be racing not to avoid elimination in Amman, but for better placement going into their sixth leg to avoid a time deficit.
6. Both Legs 6 and 7 of the race took teams to France. Did teams visit Paris?

Answer: No

Teams' trips through France in the sixth and seventh legs of the race brought them to the Dordogne region and the city of Toulouse where two more teams fell by the wayside, mainly due to their earlier placements at the back of the pack and their inability to navigate the confusing roadways of rural France.

In Leg 6 teams scaled castles and participated in medieval traditions while in Leg 7 teams partook in modern active and cultural challenges in Toulouse proper.
7. In the city of Málaga, Spain during their Spanish Mega-Leg, most teams fried which of these on the waterfront at Playa El Palo?

Answer: Sardines

Leg 8 of the race was a Mega-Leg and the first half of that started the teams off in Málaga, allowing them to race from the top of the city (at the Castillo de Gibralfaro) to the waterfront completing all manner of unique tasks. The sardine task was one of the Detour options-- the one completed by most teams. For this, teams had to skewer eighteen sardines and grill them on a makeshift fire on the beach.
8. Teams visiting Ronda, Spain as part of their Spanish Mega-Leg were required to participate in a Road Block sending one team member on which of these harrowing stunts beneath Puente Nuevo?

Answer: Tightrope walk

Racers proceeded directly from Málaga to Ronda to round out their Mega-Leg in Spain and this visit both started and nearly ended at the picturesque bridge of Puente Nuevo. Teams arrived here to collect a clue from a tour guide bearing an Andalusian flag and then, later, one team member performed a tightrope walk beneath the bridge to identify the same flag for their Road Block task.

After a winding double-length leg through Spain, Marcus and Michael were eliminated in fifth place leaving four teams to head into their penultimate leg.
9. Which team ran out a two hour penalty before arriving at the Pit Stop location seen here in Iceland?

Answer: Aubrey and David

Four teams headed to the alien landscape of Southwestern Iceland in their penultimate leg, racing across glaciers, fissures, rivers, caves, and waterfalls, and it proved to be a bit too much for Aubrey and David who, struggling with a chilling swimming task in the Silfra Fissure, elected to take a two hour penalty when they were already at the back of the pack.

The pair still stepped on the mat at the depicted location, Gullfoss, but they did not proceed into the final leg of the race.
10. In the final leg of the race, teams delivered guitars, bottled whiskey, and stepped into the Grand Ole Opry in what U.S. city?

Answer: Nashville

A city with major roots in Country Music, the tenth and final leg of the race tested teams' mettle with both physical and detail-oriented tasks while leaning into the cultural touchpoints of this major U.S. destination. In Downtown Nashville, teams climbed up and down the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge, delivered guitars along Lower Broadway, and stepped across the Finish Line in the Grand Ole Opry where Derek and Claire won the million dollars.
