Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams raced to Iceland in the penultimate leg. Did they start the leg in the capital city, Reykjavik?

Answer: No

To lead into the ninth leg of the race and attempt to secure a spot in the finale, the top four teams were flown two thousand miles northwest from the south of Spain to the city of Reykjavik, Iceland though they did not rip open their clues in this capital.

Instead, teams boarded helicopters that took them to the starting point for this leg, the glacier of Sólheimajökull, where they would head out in fifteen minute blocks.
2. Teams' first task in Iceland had them collecting which of these from atop a glacier?

Answer: A flag

Arriving at Sólheimajökull, teams opened their clues and commenced a physically-demanding climb up the side of the glacier, taking crampons and ice axes in-hand to ascend the side of a slippery ice wall. At the top, team members would need to collect one Icelandic flag each, clipping it on and delivering it to their instructor at the end of the climb.

They could trade two total flags for their next clue and hop into their vehicles.
3. The Road Block teams encountered in Iceland had one racer doing which of the following through the region's unique landscape?

Answer: Abseiling

After an ice climb, teams needed to drive themselves (in manual transmission vehicles) through the unique landscape of Iceland from Sólheimajökull to Fljótshlíđarfoss. There, teams found their Road Block clue by the river's edge and were required to choose a team member to get 'misty-eyed'. For this challenge, racers needed to abseil one hundred feet into a fissure to collect their next clue. To get out, the participant then needed to take a course through the chilly waters of Iceland, jumping, sliding, and swimming through the river to reunite with their partner.

While Derek was required to complete this Road Block to ensure a close-to-even count going into the final leg, David, Luis, and Molly elected to complete this.
4. In the Silfra Fissure, racers had to memorize the names of which of these Icelandic locations?

Answer: Volcanoes

Finishing the Road Block, teams needed to drive to Thingvellir National Park to partake in a task at the Silfra Fissure. Putting on wetsuits and snorkelling gear, racers had to dive into the space between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates and search for fourteen names and dates of Icelandic volcanic eruptions.

Then, once they'd surfaced, they would need to properly order the eruptions on a provided board. If they got all fourteen correct they would get their next clue but if they were incorrect they would have to swim the fissure again.
5. Which team was eliminated at the end of Leg 11 in Iceland?

Answer: Aubrey and David

If teams correctly laid out their volcano names, they would be given the instruction to drive to their final Pit Stop of the race at Gullfoss, a massive Southwest Icelandic waterfall. Derek and Claire were the first to hit the mat, managing to retake the lead position across this leg of the race and claiming their third first place win of the season. This time, the pair won enough Expedia Reward Points for a five-day trip for two to London, England.

Aubrey and David were eliminated in this leg of the race as they elected to take a two hour penalty by not completing the volcano task at the Silfra Fissure. Already in last, there was no way for the pair to overtake the other teams.
6. In the final leg of the race, visiting the state of Tennessee, teams had to bottle which of these locally-made beverages?

Answer: Whiskey

For their last leg of the race, the final three teams found themselves flying three thousand miles south to Nashville, Tennessee (for the state's first appearance in the race). All three teams started the leg outside the city proper, being set up to leave at the same time with their clues in front of the Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg. For their first task, teams had to enter the distillery and properly bottle thirty bottles of single barrel whiskey, boxing them per the company's standards to receive their next clue.
7. For the final Road Block of the race, teams climbed to the top of a bridge and rappelled down the side. What did they collect from the top?

Answer: Guitar pick

As soon as teams finished the whiskey challenge, they were told to drive themselves into the city of Nashville to find their next clue box at the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge. The challenge there was the race's final Road Block and it involved one racer from each pair climbing and rappelling the bridge, a height of three hundred feet above the Cumberland River.

At the top, the participant needed to grab a Gibson guitar pick, an indication of their next destination: Nashville's Gibson Garage. Derek, Emily, and Michelle completed this task.
8. Teams had to complete a delivery task throughout Nashville in their final leg, but they received the clue for this from who of the following?

Answer: Past racers

Driving to the Gibson Garage, racers arrived to find country singers and past racers Caroline and Jennifer onstage with their next clue, and this one resulted in a delivery challenge involving Gibson's world-famous guitars. Picking up three cases, teams needed to deliver their contents to musicians playing at honky-tonk bars along Nashville's Lower Broadway neighbourhood, stopping specifically at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, the Whiskey Bent Saloon, and the Wildhorse Saloon, to collect tickets that would lead them to their next destination.
9. Teams' final memory task involved playing what instrument while identifying items seen during the race?

Answer: Piano

For teams' final task they were directed to locate the Nashville Municipal Auditorium and head inside for a memory challenge (and a nod to Nashville's music history). There, teams were given a full floor piano and when they stepped on the keys they would be shown an image. Eleven of the images on the keyboard, each corresponding to actual notes, would be images of things seen in the previous eleven legs and when played in their specific order (and within eleven seconds), they would be able to get their final clue. Teams would come to determine that the tune they would inevitably be playing was the "Amazing Race" theme song.
10. Which team won "The Amazing Race 34"?

Answer: Derek and Claire

With only one clue to rip and read, teams were directed from their final task to the Finish Line at the 'Mother Church of Country Music'-- Ryman Auditorium, the home of the Grand Ole Opry-- where they could head inside to the main stage and land on the mat to get their ultimate standing.

After ten legs of the race (including two Mega-Legs) through eight different countries and facing all elimination Pit Stops, it was Derek and Claire who hit this spot in first place to win the million dollar prize.

They were followed by Emily and Molly in second place and Luis and Michelle in third.
