The plot of the show centers around Andy (Andy Griffith) and Barney (Don Knotts), who not only work together in the sheriff's office, but they are cousins and obviously have been friends for a very long time. Andy is the one who is laid back and wise; Barney is impulsive and excitable. While some visitors to Mayberry make the mistake of labeling Andy as a country bumpkin, nothing is farther from the truth. The same really cannot be said about Barney!

Another underlying theme of the show is the importance of family. Andy has a young son, Opie (Ron Howard), whose mother died when he was "the least little speck of a baby". Not to worry, however, because Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) takes good care of them both. Many episodes of the series focus on problems that kids (and their parents) have while growing up, such as how to deal with a bully who has moved to town, what to do when your family thinks you have an imaginary friend who is a real person they don't know, or how to tell your dad that your teacher has made several mistakes on your grade card.

Added to Andy's extended family are several characters with different personalities, such as Floyd (Howard McNear) the barber, who is a bit of a gossip. His shop is a gathering place for the men of the town. Then there is Otis (Hal Smith), the town drunk, who is a nice fellow who needs a place to stay (the jail) when he's had too much to drink. Cousins Gomer (Jim Nabors) and Goober (George Lindsey), who work at the local gas station, are there to help when needed, and yes, Andy and Barney do have girlfriends, and their love lives are finally resolved - but not on this show. Barney married Thelma Lou (Betty Lynn) in "Return to Mayberry" (1986) and Andy married Helen (Aneta Corsaut) in an episode of "Mayberry R.F.D." (1968).

It was a simpler time and a simpler place, but I still enjoy visiting from time to time. The incorrect choices were characters that were featured in "Green Acres", which aired from 1965-1971.
