Kennedy's career took off very shortly after his appearance with Andy Griffith. He may be best remembered for his role as the convict "Dragline" in "Cool Hand Luke" for which he won an Academy Award.

Van Cleef was a busy actor before his appearance on the Andy Griffith show, appearing in guest roles on western TV shows, such as "The Rifleman", "Have Gun Will Travel" and many others. A leg injury forced him into semi retirement for awhile, but Italian director Sergio Leone signed him for a villain role in his spaghetti westerns, and he became a major star of the genre.

He passed away in 1986.
