Irene Fairchild takes over Howard's old office in the Mayberry County Building after Howard moves to larger office. The nurse discovers Howard's t-shirt in a file cabinet that was once his. Embarrassed, Howard explains that he had taken off the shirt on a particularly hot day. What a wildman!

Answer: Singing tenor in Andy's barbershop quartet

Just before the barbershop quartet contest in Mt. Pilot, Howard succumbs to a throat infection. Out of desperation, Andy replaces Howard with a prisoner. Of course, the prisoner happens to be a tenor and Andy's group wins the competition. Howard's true greatness is not be revealed in this episode.

The end of the episode shows that perhaps momma Sprague was right. Howard expresses a desire to continue playing cards while all the other players seem utterly exhausted and want to call it a night.

Millie's bully of an ex-boyfriend, Clyde Plaunt, is played by Allan Melvin. While Melvin is best known for his role of Sam the Butcher on the "Brady Bunch", he appears on "The Andy Griffith Show" in eight episodes. While in Mayberry, Melvin never plays the same character twice.

Sadly, this is the last Howard-centric episode of "The Andy Griffith Show". After "The Wedding", there are only five more episodes before the show is cancelled. Happily, the character of Howard Sprague lives on in the spin-off "Mayberry RFD", where more wacky Howard adventures ensue.
