Metallica had a number of run-ins with Motley Crue and many of the Sunset Strip hair metal bands so Poison and Motley Crue were not featured in the game. Similarly, the leader of Megadeth, Dave Mustaine, was kicked out of Metallica and his band was not included in the video game. Surprisingly, Slayer's song "War Ensemble" is included despite Kerry King's criticism of the band's more "pop" turn in the mid-1990s. Metallica had a great relationship with Ozzy Osbourne but nothing by Black Sabbath was included in "Guitar Hero: Metallica".
On Metallica's 1998 album, "Garage Inc", they paid tribute to some of their favorite songs and bands by releasing an album of covers. Many of these songs on "Garage Inc." were showcased the "Guitar Hero: Metallica" video game. Southern rockers, Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday Gone" and Bob Seger's "Turn The Page" were both popular on rock radio and great songs for Metallica to show their love of Southern rock. On the album were tracks by Thin Lizzy, Mercyful Fate, and Diamond Head. But in the video game, they chose three different tracks by those bands. Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town", Mercyful Fate's "Evil", and Diamond Head's "Am I Evil?" were included on the soundtrack of the game.
Alice In Chains' hit "No Excuses" appears early in the video game. The Seattle grunge band was slated to tour with Metallica but had to cancel after the death of Layne Staley. Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy" is on the soundtrack. Queen's version featured a blistering guitar solo by Brian May and Metallica turned up the heat with their cover and Kirk Hammett taking on the solo.
On the fifth stage of "Guitar Hero: Metallica", players had the chance to play Judas Priest's "Hell Bent For Leather". The UK based heavy metal band has been widely considered one of the ultimate groups of the genre and lead singer Rob Halford's voice set the stage for powerful vocalists. On that same fifth stage, UK metal pioneers, Motorhead, had their signature hit, "Ace of Spades" on the video game soundtrack. Motorhead was led by bassist and lead vocalist Lemmy Kilmister.
