Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This game introduced "crates" in 2010, which allows players to spend real world money on virtual keys in order to unbox a variety of cosmetic items. What was this game called?

Answer: Team Fortress 2

Upon opening these crates, players had a 1% chance of finding an "Unusual Hat", which are cosmetic items that have visual effects applied to them. Examples include the hats being on fire, and hats having clouds hovering over them.

The game's developer, Valve, went on to include a similar mechanic in another one of their games, "Counter-Strike 2". In that game's case, players can unbox rare knives that can be equipped as weapons.
2. This indie game, released in 2016, was created by a one-man development team, and was inspired by the developer's dissatisfaction with "Harvest Moon" games that were being released at the time. What was the name of this cozy video game?

Answer: Stardew Valley

Eric Barone (ConcernedApe) developed "Stardew Valley" as a solo passion project after his graduation from university in 2011. It took five years to develop.

Since its release, he has continued to sporadically update the game with new content, including an entire new island to explore, Ginger Island.
3. Steam, an online video game storefront, occasionally has week long sales depending on the event or season. In 2015, they ceased to feature sales that would only last for a few hours at a time during these events. What were they called?

Answer: Flash sales

Steam ceased to feature these types of sales after the refund system was introduced in 2015.

Since then, they have opted to offer discounts that last for a few days at a time so that people can purchase the games at a time of their liking, instead of having to sit in front of their computer to wait for the sales to update.

Flash sales used to last for 6-12 hours at a time, and would regularly offer games at discounts as deep as 90%.
4. In 2018, Blizzard Entertainment released "Overwatch", a class-based first-person shooter. Since it is primarily a multiplayer game, how did it reveal lore surrounding the characters and its world?

Answer: Animated video shorts and webcomics

Blizzard was inspired by "Team Fortress 2's" method of delivering its lore. Much like Valve did for "Team Fortress 2", Blizzard uploaded videos featuring the characters sporadically on their YouTube channel. They also uploaded comics on the official "Overwatch" website.

Blizzard rebranded its sequel, "Overwatch 2", back to "Overwatch" in 2026 in order to pivot the game from one that would receive sequels every few years, to a game that would be occasionally updated with new content as long as it had active players.
5. Despite many video game magazines going out of print in the 2010s, which PC gaming magazine continued to operate throughout the entire decade in both online and print form?

Answer: PC Gamer

"Electronic Gaming Monthly" ceased to operate in print form in 2014, but was relaunched as a web-only magazine in 2019.

"PC Accelerator" was short-lived and was only in print from 1998 to 2000.

"Computer Games Magazine" was in fact not in print at all during the 2010s, with its final issue having been released in April 2007.
6. A roguelite is a subgenre of video game that emphasizes starting a new "run" of the game each time you play it. At the end of a run, you can unlock new upgrades and playable characters to make your next "run" of the game easier. This offers the player a sort of meta-progression through the game. Which of the following titles popularized this genre in the 2010s?

Answer: The Binding of Isaac

"The Binding of Isaac" was so popular upon release in 2011, that the game was remade in 2014 as "The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth" so that more items and levels could be added into the game. "The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth" has been ported to over 10 consoles in total, including Apple TV.

"Ball x Pit" is a twist on the classic brick-breaker genre of video game 5 that was pioneered with "Breakout" in 1976. "Ball x Pit" is a roguelite, but was released in 2025.

"Balatro" is a deck builder roguelite game that was released in 2023. It is based on Poker.

"The End is Nigh" is a platformer title that was designed by Edmund McMillen, the same game designer as "The Binding of Isaac".
7. Launched as a competitor to Valve's Steam service, which digital storefront was developed by the developers of "Fortnite" in 2018?

Answer: Epic Games Store

The Epic Games Store offers its user base with a free game that can be claimed each month. Notable games that were provided for free were "Death Stranding" and "Grand Theft Auto V".

The Epic Games Store has historically been a distant second in market share in comparison to Steam, which had an approximate market share of 85% in the 2020s.
8. This game was available for two years in alpha and beta versions, and was formally released on November 18th, 2011. Which game was it?

Answer: Minecraft

"Minecraft" continuously received content updates throughout the 2010s, such as the "Village & Pillage" update in 2019, which added major changes its villager system.

The game's studio, Mojang, was sold to Microsoft in 2014. "Minecraft" was then ported to nearly every game console that was available at the time, including the Xbox One and Playstation 4.
9. Some PC games included benchmark software, which are programs that stress-test your system's capabilities. Which game was considered as the premier benchmark back in 2015?

Answer: Grand Theft Auto V

"Crysis 2" was previously the highest level in benchmark software when it was released in 2011.

Benchmark software usually provides you with a score after the fact, which can be used to compare your systems with others, giving you an idea of where your system stands (and bragging rights, too!).
10. Game development is as easy as ever on PC, with game engines like Game Maker allowing novice game programmers to build their own games with little to no programming knowledge necessary. Which 2013 video game, developed by Hopoo Games, was developed entirely in the Game Maker engine?

Answer: Risk of Rain

"Risk Of Rain" was developed on a budget of $30,000, which was raised on the Kickstarter crowdfunding website. A sequel to it was released in 2020, now utilizing 3D graphics, as opposed to the first game's 2D graphics.

"Undertale" was similarly developed on a budget that was raised through Kickstarter, however it was developed by one person, Toby Fox, as opposed to "Risk Of Rain's" two-man development team.
