Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Luigi's Mansion 3

Answer: Action-adventure

"Luigi's Mansion 3" was a 2019 action-adventure game from Next Level Games. It was the third game in the series with the earlier ones aimed at other gaming consoles - the 2001 "Luigi's Mansion" was for the GameCube while "Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon (also named as "Luigi's Mansion 2") started on the Nintendo DS. King Boo was up to his tricks again and, once again, Mario and others needed to be saved and the ghosts in the hotel dealt with.

The Poltergust vacuum cleaner was essential in this regard. Players controlled Luigi (or Gooigi, his ectoplasmic doppelgänger) with single player and multi-player options.
2. Metroid Dread

Answer: Action-adventure

Another action-adventure game, "Metroid Dread" was released in 2021 on Nintendo Switch. This was the ninth instalment of the "Metroid" franchise. It was a 2D game and originally intended for Nintendo DS however technical limitations saw development abandoned for that console.

The 2021 "Dread" for Switch proved to be popular. Players controlled the bounty hunter Samus Aran while she explored the planet ZDR with side-scrolling gameplay and stealth mechanics. The character first appeared in the 1986 "Metroid" video game.
3. Princess Peach: Showtime!

Answer: Action-adventure

Coming from the developer Good-Feel, the 2024 action-adventure game "Princess Peach: Showtime!" was the second game to feature Princess Peach as the main protagonist, the first being the 2005 "Super Princess Peach". The player as Princess Peach (in various Peach persona) worked with a sentient ribbon called Stella to rescue the Sparkles and restore Sparkle Theatre by overcoming the wicked witch Grape and her Sour Bunch minions.
4. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Answer: Fighting

Fifth instalment in the "Super Smash Bros." series, the 2018 "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" was a fighting game where the player had the choice of eighty-nine playable characters from forty mostly-Nintendo franchises. Up to eight players battled it out, taking damage and being ejected from the arena. Unless, of course, the player or team won. Gameplay tended to be one of three kinds - KOs within a time limit, having a set number of lives, or having a set amount of stamina. Various features could be tweaked to player preferences.
5. Pokkén Tournament DX

Answer: Fighting

"Pokkén Tournament DX" was the 2017 Nintendo Switch version of the 2015 arcade video game "Pokkén Tournament". The game itself mixed the gameplay elements of Bandai Namco's "Tekken" series with Pokémon characters. Generally, two fighters went up against each other with players controlling the action (in both arcade and console versions) via console-style controllers rather than arcade-style joysticks and buttons.

There were versions for arcade, Nintendo Switch and Wii U with a minimum of sixteen Pokémon characters in each version.
6. Arms

Answer: Fighting

The 2017 3D fighting game "Arms" was mostly about the extendable arms that each fighter used during a fight. These tended to have different attributes, depending on the character, but meant that there was both distance fighting and close-up action. Different strategies were required, depending on the attributes of your opponent's arms and their particular skillset.

There were multiple fighting modes and scope for multiple players, including playing in teams.
7. Pokémon Sword and Shield

Answer: Role-playing

Developed by Game Freak, the "Pokémon Sword" and "Pokémon Shield" role-playing games were released in 2019. They were the first of the 8th generation "Pokémon" video games. They were also the first in this series to be supplemented by a downloadable content (DLC) expansion pass rather than upgrade through the release of an improved version.

The DLC came in 2020 in two parts: "The Isle of Armor" and "The Crown Tundra". There was some backlash to the announcement that many pre-existing Pokémon could not be used in "Sword" and "Shield", a feature of previous "Pokémon" series games.

The player was required to catch and train Pokémon, battle against other trainers and ultimately seek to become Galar League Champion.
8. Miitopia

Answer: Role-playing

Originally released for Nintendo 3DS in 2016/2017, the role-playing game "Miitopia" was remastered by Grezzo and released for Nintendo Switch in 2021. With customisable Mii characters, the protagonist group of heroes used a turn-based battle system ultimately to defeat the Dark Lord and his plans.

The game had a life simulation element with characters being assigned personalities. Part of the game was about finding out their food preferences and managing their relationships. Personalities and the state of their relationships in turn affected how the Mii performed together in combat.
9. Octopath Traveler

Answer: Role-playing

The "Octopath Traveler" role-playing game arrived in 2018, starting off in Nintendo Switch. It was first to use the HD-2D style where 'retro' 2D pixel characters were portrayed in a 3D-style environment (incorporating more modern rendering techniques).

It was subsequently released on other platforms over the following years. The player chose a character to play from one of eight adventurers, each with a different story, with a different character class and having their own skillset. Switching between them was possible as well.

The player followed the stories of the eight heroes while journeying through Orsterra and joining up to confront the enemy as a group. Battling was turn-based.
10. 1-2-Switch

Answer: Other

Launched in 2017, "1-2-Switch" was a party video game where player-to-player interaction was the main gameplay element. To play the game, it was usually two players facing each other with each holding one of the Joy-Con controllers whilst playing one of the minigames. The screen was generally not required with instructions typically coming through audio cues. The original game was launched with the new Switch console with a sequel (in the form of "Everybody 1-2-Switch") being launched in 2023.
11. Among Us

Answer: Other

Ported to Nintendo Switch in 2020, "Among Us" was originally released on iOS and Android devices. It was an online multiplayer social deduction game and allowed for cross-platform play. Players took on the role of cartoon astronauts, either Crewmates or Imposters.

The game involved the Crewmates trying identify and expel the Imposters while the Imposters were just trying to kill the Crewmates. The game was for four to fifteen players.
12. Suika Game

Answer: Other

Also known as "Watermelon Game", "Suika Game" was a puzzle video game released on Nintendo Switch in Japan in 2021 and worldwide in 2023. It started off as a game developed by Aladdin X for their digital projectors. Its popularity saw it make its way onto the Nintendo eShop and then worldwide.

The gameplay had the player dropping a wide variety of fruits into a container with points earned where two fruits of the same type combined. This resulted in a larger fruit being formed, the biggest being a watermelon. Two watermelons combined would disappear, creating some space in the container.

The game ended when the collected fruit rose about a line at the top of the container. A sequel called "Suika Game Planet" was released at the end of 2025.
