Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nintendo was originally founded in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi to produce "hanafuda", which are what?

Answer: playing cards

Hanafuda is a Japanese card game. It is quite common in Korea, and goes under the name "Stop Go" there. The game is designed for four players, and it's often paired cross-table.
2. Nintendo has four national headquarters covering different parts of the globe. They are large facilities that deal with the national matters of that region. Which of these is not one of them?

Answer: Nintendo of Canada

While "Nintendo of Canada" does exist in name, there is no official headquarters for such, as the Nintendo of America HQ is used for all Canadian business.

Nintendo of Japan, their main branch, is based in Kyoto, Japan. Nintendo of America, their North American division, is based in Redmond, Washington. Nintendo of Australia is based in Scoresby, Victoria, and Nintendo of Europe is based in Großostheim, Germany.
3. Nintendo's first successful console was the NES. What does NES stand for?

Answer: Nintendo Entertainment System

The Nintendo Entertainment System was released by Nintendo in North America, Europe, and Australia. The Japanese equivalent is the Famicom, or the Nintendo Family Computer.
4. When the SNES came, Nintendo fans everywhere were pleased to find many great new games, as well as beautifully designed sequels of their favourite NES games. But over in Japan, it wasn't called the SNES! What was it called?

Answer: Super Famicom

The original Japanese 8-bit console was called the Nintendo Family Computer, or Famicom for short. Its follow-up simply had "Super" added to the front of it. Clearly, the same was done elsewhere, as shown with the NES and Super NES.
5. This was the first game released for the SNES. It was often bundled with the system itself, and sold extremely well, whether it was bought with the system or not. To which game am I referring?

Answer: Super Mario World

"Super Mario World" was the first game made for the Super Famicom in Japan, as well as the Super Nintendo in North America and Europe. The game has also been released for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance handheld system under the title "Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World".
6. The SNES was a huge success, but it could have been so much more! A fact that many don't know is that Nintendo initially had a contract to develop an add-on CD-ROM drive for the SNES, but after a standalone version of the drive was made, Nintendo terminated the contract. This CD-ROM drive was tweaked and became one of the most popular consoles ever, with an endless library of games spanning every genre. I'm sure Nintendo regrets terminating that contract, because the famous gaming company that created it is none other than... whom?

Answer: Sony

Nintendo terminated the contract and went with Phillips. Ultimately, the idea of an add-on drive for the SNES never materialized, but Sony took their product, tweaked it over time, and spun it off into a standalone product known as the "PlayStation". Nintendo announced their alliance with Phillips at the same conference that Sony announced their CD-ROM drive.

Could you imagine the popularity of the SNES if it had the ability to play every SNES and PlayStation game available?
7. Next up was the Nintendo 64. Why was it called this?

Answer: It was a 64-bit gaming system

64-bit refers to the number of bits used in the data bus of a computer. As all consoles are technically forms of computers, this applies. Specifically, it's the number of bits of data transferred on each read (or write) of memory, and the number of bits used internally by the CPU to carry out processes.

Respectively, the NES, SNES, N64, and GameCube are 8, 16, 64, and 32-bit.
8. When polygons smoothed out and systems like the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 came out, Microsoft released the XBOX, and Nintendo countered with the GameCube. Which of these is NOT true about the Nintendo GameCube?

Answer: It is a perfect cube, measuring 5.8 inches in height, width, and depth.

The physical measurements of the system are 4.3" height x 5.9" width x 6.3" depth. Because of this, it is not a cube, but instead a very compact rectangular block.

As for the other options: the GameCube has four controller ports, a broadband adapter (supported by VERY few games), and an add-on that connects to the base of the GameCube. It is called the Game Boy Player, and it plays the vast majority of Game Boy, Game Boy Colour, and Game Boy Advance games.
9. In the handheld market, Nintendo has had many ventures, the most successful being the incredibly addictive Game Boy, which was introduced to the world in 1989. However, Nintendo had another console marketed as a "portable system", but it definitely was not. Released in 1995, it was heavy, it was dangerous, and it was a down-right flop! What was it called?

Answer: Virtual Boy

The Virtual Boy was marketed as a portable system, but it was definitely not. Due to its size and weight, the Virtual Boy was nearly impossible to use while in motion, and doing so could have caused damage to the unit. And why was it dangerous, you might ask? Well, the console's box and manual warned that the display could cause eyestrain and eye problems, especially for those under 7 years of age.

In fact, every Virtual Boy game paused automatically every 15 to 30 minutes to remind the player to take a break and prevent undue eyestrain and possible headaches. Oh, and when I say "every" game, I am using the term lightly. Truth be told, there were only 22 titles ever available between the Virtual Boy's North American and Japanese markets, and they were not popular. Needless to say, the Virtual Boy didn't last very long.
10. Nintendo has always been great at helping fans when they're stuck. They even have an official magazine that has tips, cheat codes, passwords, and walkthroughs. This strategy magazine is often criticized, though, because many fans feel their information is far too subjective, and they don't offer enough critical information to help someone decide whether that game is worth purchasing. What is the name of this magazine?

Answer: Nintendo Power

"Nintendo Power" is distributed monthly. The first issue was published in 1989, and it highlighted the wacky "Super Mario Bros. 2" for the NES. So far, Nintendo has churned out over 180 issues, covering thousands of games. Well, that's it! Thanks for playing! Hope you enjoyed it!
