Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The adventure begins in New Bark Town, where who of these people will give you your first Pokemon?

Answer: Professor Elm

The beginning of "Pokemon Gold/Silver" may seem familiar. While "Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow" had you depart from Pallet Town with a starter Pokemon handed off by Professor Oak, you need to visit Professor Elm's lab in New Bark Town to choose either Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile and run an errand, visiting Mr. Pokemon's house on Route 30. You'll be able to keep the starter Pokemon in any case, because you'll be met by Professor Oak at your destination, handed a Pokedex, and told you have great potential.
2. How many new Pokemon were added to the series in Generation II?

Answer: 100

While Generation I ultimately ended off with one hundred fifty-one Pokemon, "Gold" and "Silver" brought forth one hundred more, folding in the new dark-types and steel-types and adding more across the board for existing types already in the world. Although the number of Pokemon added in this Generation was lower than the original, many of the first one hundred fifty-one were catchable in Johto as well, making the actual number of available Pokemon significantly higher. And yes, all of them would be trackable on a new and improved Pokedex.
3. Which of these is NOT a setting on your PokéGear?

Answer: Badges

As soon as the adventure starts you'll be able to stop in at home and collect your recently-repaired PokéGear from your mom, and it'll prove to be a valuable multitool for the journey. Though it only starts as a clock and a phone, you can pick up a Map Card from a man in Cherrygrove City and the Radio Card from completing a quiz in the Goldenrod City Radio Tower to fill out its uses.

In both the game and the anime series, the PokéGear is shaped like (and functions like) a cell phone.
4. A new addition to this Generation allowed Pokemon to do what with items?

Answer: Hold them

And it's a very helpful capability! From your party list you can add or remove items from your Pokemon (only one per) in order to provide them with a single-use item to activate in battle or a long-term bonus to their stats provided they're relevant to that Pokemon to begin.

The former can be quite clutch, giving your Pokemon the chance to use an item without interfering with turn order or the use of another item, by yourself, during the flow of battle. Some Pokemon, when captured, may actually show up with an item in-hand!
5. Throughout the game, your rival will fight you on a recurring basis. Which of these is never a Pokemon they'll use to fight you?

Answer: Seaking

On top of always picking the starter Pokemon that opposes your own, your rival will always build up this game's new Pokemon types, dark and steel, to some degree, also picking up a couple of party members known for their general ill-temperament or sinister nature.

Although they will evolve over the course of the game, you are likely to fight late-game matches against a party that includes Sneasel, Magneton, Gengar, Alakazam, Crobat, and whichever starter evolution makes sense. Interestingly, your rival will never be the Pokemon Champion and, as such, your storyline's final battle will be against someone else.
6. This is the first Generation in which you can rebattle certain trainers. In "Gold" and "Silver", can you rebattle gym leaders?

Answer: No

The ability to do this isn't present in "Gold", "Silver", or "Crystal", but does get introduced into the game for "HeartGold" and "SoulSilver". Instead, you can prompt the opportunity to rebattle regular trainers found throughout your travels by speaking to them after your fight.

Some will indicate their willingness to stay in touch, and if you swap phone numbers, keeping them in your contacts list, they'll ring you up when they're ready to fight again. These calls typically happen over a set amount of time, so there's no guarantee you won't have far surpassed their skill level by the time they're set.
7. Pokemon Breeding can be pursued in this game by leaving two Pokemon with the Pokemon Daycare. Which Pokemon can not be obtained in this manner?

Answer: Mew

Located on Route 34, south of Goldenrod City, the Pokemon Daycare is the-- hate to say it-- breeding ground for a new feature in this Generation, specifically the ability to birth new 'baby Pokemon' that act as pre-evolved forms of later creatures. For instance, Pikachu has a smaller form-- Pichu-- which can be created via these means. If successful, the breeding process will result in an Egg which the trainer can carry in their party to hatch into the new Pokemon. Baby Pokemon introduced in Generation II include Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Togepi, Tyrogue, Smoochum, Elekid, and Magby, all of which are baby forms of Gen I Pokemon, technically, except Togepi.
8. Which Pokemon type is NOT represented by a gym in Johto?

Answer: Water-type

Though there is a water-type gym in Cerulean City in Kanto, water doesn't feature as one of the eight gyms you'll encounter in your Johto run-through, though you do encounter ice-types in Mahogany City in the game's seventh gym (when, previously, it was just an Elite Four type).

In order, "Gold"/"Silver"/"Crystal" feature gym types that include flying, bug, normal, ghost, fighting, steel, ice, and dragon, all of which were never really featured in the gym rosters of "Red"/"Blue"/"Yellow" except for normal, which shows up to a degree in Viridian City (with Giovanni).

This being said, there is a fighting dojo in Saffron City, even if it doesn't award a badge.
9. You've made it to the Indigo Plateau for Johto and beaten the Elite Four. Who is the Pokemon Champion you must face?

Answer: Lance

Lance, the former leader of the Elite Four in "Red", "Blue", and "Yellow", and a dragon-type trainer who you encounter during your stop in Mahogany Town, takes the top spot at the end of the Johto journey, bringing forth his best and toughest to cap off the adventure...at least for now. What you'll find is that your trip around the map is only half done since the map effectively doubles after this point.

Lance himself seems to be a fairly reasonable character, out to stop the evil Team Rocket and train Pokemon with love and empathy. He's also responsible for handing over HM06 (Whirlpool).
10. Completion of the Johto Elite Four opens up which other region to the player?

Answer: Kanto

In what was a bit of a surprise to players upon first release, the brand-new Johto adventures of "Gold" and "Silver" didn't need to end with the same-ol' Elite Four battles because you could instead hop over to Kanto, as featured in "Red", "Blue", and "Yellow", to collect the eight badges found there as well. Avid players will find that while locations are still in the same spots on the map, certain Pokemon have been added/removed, trainers (including gym leaders) have been updated, and new challenges await to coincide with new stories that've unfolded since.
