The official state song of Georgia is the soul classic "Georgia on My Mind," originally written by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell. Like me, you may not have realized this Ray Charles standard is also the official song of the Peach State. I always knew it as a standard, slotted between "Hit the Road Jack" and "What I'd Say"...or honestly, as the theme song used to shill Georgia Coffee here in Japan back in the '90s.
Though, the anthem was born in 1930 as a jazz song, its modern history truly began when Georgia native Ray Charles recorded it in the '60s. On March 7, 1979, Charles performed his version on the floor of the Georgia state capitol building. Georgia lawmakers moved with lightning speed after that performance and they officially adopted the track as the formal state song just a few weeks later on April 24, 1979. It's online, and while the quality is garbage, it's worth a watch nonetheless.
The lyrics focus on the peace of home, and rural Georgia, as I knew it in my youth, comes through clearly. Lines within the song will echo with you if you have ever been out in the red muds. Moonlight through the pine trees, peaceful dreams on a sunny afternoon, and old roads leading straight back to loved ones - bucolic, melancholic, and yet true. Sorry, my usual sarcasm is gone, but ...well... I guess I wouldn't have minded a line or two about that red mud, throwing rail spikes at glass bottles, and sippin' on an RC Cola while chewin' a Moon Pie.
Georgia had relied on a much older, less famous song titled "Georgia'" by Robert Loveman, which was anodyne and rather short. Interestingly, the state completely ignored other famous songs with Georgia in the title like "Marching through Georgia," presumably because Sherman wasn't the most popular feller back then.
"Georgia on My Mind" gave the state a true masterpiece. The anthem is a joyful tribute to the environment and people that make Georgia such a vibrant place to live. The original sheet music is officially in the public domain, meaning anyone can legally sing or make a FunTrivia quiz out of it without getting sued.
