Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of ammunition does the M14 fire?

Answer: 7.62 x 51mm NATO

Commonly referred to as just ".762", this ammunition is standard for arms developed within NATO countries, hence the NATO inclusion in the title. This ammunition type was designed in 1944, taking the place of the .30-06 Springfield ammunition.
2. In what year was the M14 officially recognized as the service rifle of the United States Armed Forces?

Answer: 1957

In this capacity, the M14 replaced the long-standing M1 Garand, which had been through both World Wars. The M14 served in this capacity for exactly a decade, being replaced by the M16 in 1967.
3. A variant of the M14, the MK14, would later go on to be created and would see limited use as an official service rifle. In what year was the MK14 created?

Answer: 2002

In the year 2000, development on the MK14 Enhanced Battle Rifle or, EBR for short, began. It was at the request of the US Navy Seals, as the Seals wanted a more compact version of the original M14. Development on the MK14 was slightly rough at first, as the original, very first model was compact as desired, but produced excessive amounts of noise on being fired. It was perfected in 2002.
4. A few gunmaking companies were officially contracted to produce the M14 not long after it became the official service rifle of the US. Which company of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Smith and Wesson

Thompson-Ramo-Wooldridge, in addition to Winchester, Springfield Armory and Harrington & Richardson, would end up being contracted to mass produce the M14 rifle. Starting in the late 1950s and carrying on into the mid 60s, these companies would go on to produce many, many proper M14s.
5. The M14 was mass produced for service well into the 1960s. Roughly how many M14s were produced during the time period of 1959-1964?

Answer: Roughly 1.3 million

The four companies contracted to produce M14s ultimately totaled out into 1,376,031 M14s during this time frame. As a point of reference, roughly 86,000 people were newly enlisted into some branch of the US Armed Forces in 1960, and no more than 120,000 newly enlisted in the military during any one year in the 1960s. As such, clearly more than enough M14s were made during this time.
6. How much did an M14 with an empty magazine weigh?

Answer: 8.7 lbs (3.95 kgs)

It weighed 11.0 lbs with a full magazine and sling. A full mag, issued in Vietnam, held 20 rounds. Each 7.62 x 51mm NATO round weighs about 25 grams or, less than 0.1 pounds. As such, with a full magazine, the M14 still does not quite reach a full nine pounds in weight.
7. When the M14 was originally being rolled out to US Armed Forces, it began with a fairly lengthy production delay. What division of the United States Army was the first to obtain the M14 rifle?

Answer: 101st Airborne Division

Known as the "Screaming Eagles", this division was based around creating brigade-sized air assault missions done in the darkness. With major involvement during the Battle of the Bulge and D-Day, this division, like so many others, was clearly well suited to wield the M14.
8. In what year did production of the M14 initially cease?

Answer: 1968

In 1968, the AR-15 or, M16, was beginning production and was viewed as a superior alternative to the M14. This viewpoint came after the US Department of the Army conducted a series of tests involving both rifles. This decision ended up being somewhat contentious amongst the armed forces, as some viewed the M16 as comparatively frail and underpowered versus the M14 that was also prone to jamming. Amazingly, it was later found that deliberately defective M16s were produced and tested as a means to sabotage the rifle, furthering the notion that replacing the M14 was highly debatable at the time.
9. What is the maximum effective range of an M14?

Answer: 500 yards (457 m)

Specifically, the M14 can hit up to 1503 feet exactly. It is about at 500 yards where wind impact starts to get truly felt, so while the M14 can reach this far, doing so accurately and on target would take a truly impressive feat.
10. What was the first major conflict the M14 saw use in?

Answer: Vietnam War

The M14 had been in proper, standard production early on in the Vietnam War, and was thus the primary rifle of use for the US Armed Forces during most of this time. It would go on to later see use in more than fourteen different conflicts after Vietnam, most notably the Dominican, Syrian, Salvadoran and Lebanese Civil Wars, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and more.
