July August September Trivia Questions

1. In 1976 on July 4, a daring raid was organized by Israeli commandos freeing passengers held on a hijacked Air France plane. Where was this plane being held?

From Quiz
Not Independence Day

Answer: Entebbe, Uganda

Operation Thunderbolt was a counter-terrorist raid held by Israeli special forces commandos. The goal was to free hostages that were taken aboard an Air France flight that had been bound for Paris from Tel Aviv and were now being held at the airport in Entebbe, Uganda. Of the 248 original passengers and twelve crew, 106 hostages were being held, 105 at a building at the airport, and all but four were saved; three hostages died during the raid and the one that had been off-site, at a hospital, was killed when the outraged leader of Uganda at the time, Idi Amin, discovered that the other hostages had been freed. Only one member of the commando team was killed as well, the raid commander, Lt. Col. Yonatan Netanyahu.

2. On 12th August in the year 30 BC Cleopatra committed suicide. Whilst there is no official consensus on how she did the deed, what is generally believed to be the method?

From Quiz The Glorious Twelfth

Answer: She provoked an asp to bite her

Though she almost certainly poisoned herself, there is no historical record of an asp in particular being the means of delivery. By committing suicide, she avoided becoming a prisoner to the Romans and the indignities they may make her suffer, after the military victories of Octavian, who would become Rome's first emperor under the name of Augustus. Octavian had her son Caesarion killed in Egypt and had her other children brought to Rome.

3. On September 18th 1990, the only doubly landlocked country in Europe became a member of the United Nations. Which country is this?

From Quiz Happy Anniversary, Mrs 48

Answer: Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein has a history of being both landlocked and doubly landlocked. From the unification of Germany in 1871 until the end of WWI, the country bordered the Austro-Hungarian Empire which bordered the Adriatic Sea, meaning that Liechtenstein was landlocked. However, with the creation of landlocked country of Austria in 1918, Liechtenstein became doubly landlocked. This changed again in 1938 when Austria became part of the Third Reich which had a border of the Baltic Sea, and it reverted back to a doubly landlocked country at the end of WWII when Austria regained its independence.

4. July 1, 1916 was the first day of one of the bloodiest battles of World War I and of all history. It happened between the British/French forces and the German forces in Picardy, France. How is this battle, which ended on November 18, known?

From Quiz The First of July, August and September

Answer: Battle of the Somme

World War I, which occurred from 1914 to 1918, had several major battles, such as Gallipoli, Tannenberg, the First and Second Battles of the Marne, Jutland and Verdun. The Battle of the Somme, which took place near the Somme River, saw tanks used for the first time in warfare. On the first day of the battle, the British Army suffered 57,000 casualties, which shows how violent this particular battle was. German casualties in the Somme are estimated to be between 465,000 and 600,000.

5. On July 9, 1540, King Henry VIII of England had his marriage annulled to which fourth wife because he claimed the marriage was never consummated?

Answer: Ferdinand Magellan

The command was taken over by Juan Sebastian Elcano (Spanish) and the expedition completed its journey to Europe in 1522, thus becoming the first circumnavigation of the world. 7. On 6th August 1914 Denis Patrick Dowd Jr. enlisted in a fighting regiment and became the first American to fight in WWI. What was this regiment?

From Quiz What Happened in the World on 6th August?

Answer: French Foreign Legion

Sadly, Dowd was killed in August 1916 after an aeroplane accident. The other three regiments fought in WWI

8. On July 1, 1963, the United States Postal Service started using ZIP codes, a system to make mail more efficient. What does "ZIP" stand for in this context?

From Quiz Those Times Things Happened

Answer: Zone Improvement Plan

ZIP codes were introduced by the United States Postal Service in order to make mail quicker and efficient, constantly encouraging people to use these five-number codes, at the time non-mandatory. When the Post Office made this change, two-letter state abbreviations were also introduced. (Previous abbreviations for states had generally been longer, such as Ill. Illinois, Fla. for Florida, and Minn. for Minnesota).

9. On 31st July 1423, English and Burgundian forces defeated a joint French and Scottish army at the Battle of Cravant. This was just one of over fifty major battles that took place during which (slightly misleadingly named) conflict?

From Quiz As Famous As Harry Potter?

Answer: The Hundred Years' War

The Hundred Years' War, fought primarily between England and France, was a battle for control of the French crown and lasted for 116 years - from 1337 to 1453. The Treaty of Troyes, signed in 1420, was thought to have settled the argument as King Charles VI of France agreed to the marriage of his daughter to King Henry V of England and that their future heirs would become joint monarchs of England and France. However, the death of Henry V just two years later led Charles VI's disinherited son (King Charles VII - known at the time as the 'Dauphin') to reignite the war in order to fight for his crown. The Battle of Cravant resulted in the English succeeding in relieving a French siege of the town of Cravant (located in the Burgundy region of modern day France), but had little impact on the overall war, which continued on for another thirty years. The Thirty Years' War took place in the 17th century and involved most of Europe, the Eighty Years' War is also known as the Dutch War of Independence and the fictional Giant Wars were conflicts between wizards and giants mentioned in 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix'.

10. On July 5, 1946, what was introduced that made summer "a lot more pleasant" - to the eye, anyway?

From Quiz In the Fair Month of July

Answer: the bikini bathing suit

On that date, French designer Louis Reard introduced the two-piece bathing suit at a swimming pool in Paris, France. He gave it the name bikini after hearing a news report about a U.S. atomic bomb test earlier that week at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

11. July 23, 1992: The Republic of Abkhazia is recognized only by six sovereign countries. On this date, it declared independence from which country?

From Quiz Dog Days

Answer: Georgia

Tensions between the Georgian and Abkhaz people existed during the Soviet era, when the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Abkhaz ASSR) was a autonomous region of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic (Georgian SSR). In the 1980s, anti-Soviet Georgians began to demand independence, and based on the fact that an separate Abkhazian SSR had existed for a brief time in the late 1920s, many Abkhazians demanded their own independence. The clash between the two groups culminated in the War in Abkhazia in 1992. Although Abkhazia declared its independence that year, it was only formally recognized by six countries in 2008. These countries are Russia, Nauru, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.

12. On August 27, 2003 people on planet earth could observe an unusually bright, reddish object in the night sky. Actually it was a planet which reached its closest distance from Earth in about 60,000 years. Which planet was it?

Answer: Landed his plane near Red Square in Moscow

In May 1987 Rust, a 19-year-old West German amateur aviator, flew his rented Cessna from Finland to Moscow. He was arrested and sentenced to 4 years in a labour camp but was released after 432 days. Some sources claimed that the fact that Rust landed freely in the centre of Moscow was proof that the Soviet Union had no credible air defences. However, Rust was tracked for most of his flight path. The reason he was allowed to continue his flight was because Soviet air defences were forbidden to act aggressively towards a civilian aircraft
