Answer: Ferdinand Magellan

Portuguese explorer Magellan commanded the expedition but was unfortunately killed in the Philippines in 1521. The command was taken over by Juan Sebastian Elcano (Spanish) and the expedition completed its journey to Europe in 1522, thus becoming the first circumnavigation of the world.
The other explorers also circumnavigated the world, but after the Magellan-Elcano expedition: Drake (1577-80), Cavendish (1586-1588)and Dampier (1679-1691).
2. A song was first published on this day in 1814 that later became a national anthem. What was this song?

Answer: Star Spangled Banner

The lyrics to "Star Spangled Banner" were written by Francis Scott Key and the tune by John Stafford Smith. It became the US National Anthem in 1931. "La Marseillaise" was composed in 1792 and adopted as the French Republic's national anthem in 1796. The first published version of the music of "God Save the King" appeared in 1744 although there was a keyboard tune by John Bull in 1619 which was similar. James A. Garfield was sworn in on March 4, 1881 but passed away on September 19, 1881. Chester A. Arthur was sworn in the following day thus becoming the 21st US President.

Benjamin Harrison was sworn in on March 4, 1889 and Rutherford B. Hayes on March 5, 1877.
5. On this day in 1913 Francis Ouimet won the US Open Golf Championship. What was significant about this win?

Answer: First play off won by an amateur

Ouimet was only 20 years of age when he beat the two Englishmen, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, in 1913. It was his only win in the tournament. The tournament had previously been held in Massachusetts on four other occasions. The first golfer to win the tournament four times was Willie Anderson. The first non-American winner was in the first US Open in 1895 achieved by Horace Rawlins from England.

Answer: Lowest caste in India

Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1869-1948. The Untouchables were not allowed to enter certain villages, wear shoes in front of higher classes, enter temples or drink from the same cups or wells than the higher classes. His hunger strike attracted huge public support and forced the government to take action and improve the rights of The Untouchables.
