Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On September 18th 1990, the only doubly landlocked country in Europe became a member of the United Nations. Which country is this?

Answer: Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein has a history of being both landlocked and doubly landlocked. From the unification of Germany in 1871 until the end of WWI, the country bordered the Austro-Hungarian Empire which bordered the Adriatic Sea, meaning that Liechtenstein was landlocked.

However, with the creation of landlocked country of Austria in 1918, Liechtenstein became doubly landlocked. This changed again in 1938 when Austria became part of the Third Reich which had a border of the Baltic Sea, and it reverted back to a doubly landlocked country at the end of WWII when Austria regained its independence.
2. On September 18th 1932, actress Peg Entwistle committed suicide by jumping from where?

Answer: The Hollywood Sign

Entwistle was born in Wales and emigrated to USA somewhere around 1913 when she was five years old. She appeared in several stage shows, most notably in a 1925 production of Henrik Ibsen's "The Wild Duck", where her performance reportedly inspired child actress Bette Davis to undertake stage work, but she only appeared in a credited role in one movie, "Thirteen Women", which premiered in October 1932, a month after her suicide.
3. On September 18th 1984, Joe Kittinger sailed into the record books by completing the first solo balloon crossing of which of these?

Answer: Atlantic Ocean

Kittinger is an ex USAF colonel and to say he is a daredevil is something of an understatement. He has completed three high altitude skydives, the final one from a height of 102,800 feet (31.3 kilometres) and assisted Felix Baumgartner with his 2012 free-fall from 128,100 feet (39 Kilometres).

His Atlantic crossing in Balloon of Peace took him just four days from Caribou, Maine to Montenotte, Italy.
4. On September 18th 1879, the illuminations at this coastal resort were switched on for the very first time. Which is the seaside town now famous for the lights?

Answer: Blackpool

The Blackpool Illuminations have come a long way. In 1879, they consisted of just eight carbon arc lamps and were described as artificial sunshine, while in 2017, they used over a million bulbs and stretched for six miles (ten kilometres).
5. September 18th 1970 was a sad day in rock music history as which musician died that day?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

Hendrix will always be missed but left behind a legacy with records such as "Purple Haze", "The Wind Cries Mary", "Hey Joe" and "Voodoo Chile". It is believed that Hendrix died of asphyxia after taking 18 times the recommended dosage of barbiturates, but due to a lack of evidence of the circumstances, the coroner recorded an open verdict.
6. The second incarnation of London's Theatre Royal in Covent Garden, later to become the Royal Opera House opened on September 18th 1809. Which play was performed on opening night?

Answer: Macbeth

The original Theatre Royal, built in 1732 was destroyed by fire in 1792, resulting in this second building of the venue. Unfortunately, in 1856 this was also destroyed by fire but was again rebuilt and the third incarnation of the building opened in 1858. The Theatre Royal was renamed the Royal Opera House in 1892.
7. September 18th 1939 was the first broadcast of radio series "Germany Calling". Who was the presenter of this show aimed at demoralising Allied troops?

Answer: Lord Haw Haw

"Germany calling! Here are the Reichssender Hamburg, Station Bremen" was how each show, which was broadcast to UK and North America, started. Cleverly, the Nazis increased Allied listening figures by using the broadcasts to allow prisoners of war to send regards to relatives in their native countries and interspersing these messages with propaganda regarding Allied planes shot down and ships sunk. Lord Haw Haw was the nickname of several presenters of the show although today it generally refers to William Joyce, as he was such a high profile presenter. Joyce became, in 1946, the last person to be executed for treason in the United Kingdom, following his role in WWII.
8. On September 18th 1967, which city became capital of the Northwest Territories, Canada?

Answer: Yellowknife

Prior to this date, the affairs of NWT had been run by a council that lived and worked in Ottawa, while administrative functions for the territory were mainly undertaken by civil servants based in Fort Smith. Yellowknife is the only city in NWT and was founded in the 1930s after gold was discovered in the area.

It received a further population boost in 1991 when diamonds were discovered north of the city.
9. Which "Urban Guerilla" was arrested on September 18th 1975 in San Francisco, following her involvement in a bank robbery by the Symbionese Liberation Army?

Answer: Patty Hearst

Patty Hearst, granddaughter and heiress of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) in 1974. The SLA abused and brainwashed her and she appeared in a video tape saying that she'd joined their fight to free the oppressed, before wielding an assault weapon while robbing a bank and then going on the run and being arrested by the FBI.

At her trial she was sentenced to seven years in prison. President Carter commuted her sentenced after two years and President Clinton granted her a pardon on his last day in office.
10. On September 18, 1978, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, Peter Criss and Gene Simmons all released solo albums. How are these four men collectively known?

Answer: Kiss

Of the four solo albums, Frehley's was the most successful, although the fact that it peaked at number 26 on the Billboard chart gives a good illustration of how well these albums were received. Following the solo experiment, Kiss recorded the "Dynasty" album, from which they released, in my opinion, one of the worst songs ever, the disco inspired "I Was Made for Lovin' You".
