MLB Drafts and Trades Trivia Questions

1. Whos was the multi Cy Young pitcher who began his career in the farm system at Houston Astros, was drafted by the Florida Marlins with the 2nd pick of the 1999 Rule 5 draft, and then immediately traded to Minnesota?

From Quiz
Notable Rule 5 Draft Selections

Answer: Johan Santana

Johan Santana almost left baseball entirely after being chosen to pitch instead of playing the outfield. After being taken by the Marlins in the 1999 Rule 5 draft and then traded to the Twins, his first year in the majors resulted in a 6.49 ERA over 86 innings. A few Cy Youngs, All Star nominations, MLB triple crown and a no hitter later, and I'd say it was a pretty good trade.

2. What center fielder were the Braves able to acquire to try and keep up with the Phillies in the National League East?

From Quiz 2011 MLB Trade Deadline

Answer: Michael Bourn

The Braves sent prospects Jordan Schafer, Juan Abreu, Paul Clemens and Brett Oberholtzer to the Astros, who were in a rebuilding season, in return for Bourn. Houston also sent cash considerations to Atlanta. The Braves made the move to improve the team's speed and especially defensively in center field. The trade gave them a true lead-off man in Bourn and a chance for a playoff run.

3. Which set of three brothers have all been first round picks in a Major League Draft?

From Quiz MLB Draft

Answer: JD, Stephen, and Tim Drew

JD Drew was taken 2nd overall in the 1997 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies and did not sign, and was later taken 5th overall in the following year by the St. Louis Cardinals. Stephen Drew was drafted in the first round of the 2004 draft by the Diamondbacks, and Tim Drew was selected 28th overall by the Cleveland Indians in the 1997 draft. They were the first set of three brothers in the history of the Major League Draft to all be selected in the first round.
