Johan Santana almost left baseball entirely after being chosen to pitch instead of playing the outfield. After being taken by the Marlins in the 1999 Rule 5 draft and then traded to the Twins, his first year in the majors resulted in a 6.49 ERA over 86 innings. A few Cy Youngs, All Star nominations, MLB triple crown and a no hitter later, and I'd say it was a pretty good trade.

Two days later he was shipped to the New York Mets and in the same day sent back to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Jose Bautista found his Home Run groove in Toronto after being traded from Pittsburgh in 2008 and Bautista won back to back Home Run titles in 2010-2011 along with All Star appearances and a Home Run Derby participation.
