Super Bowl 2010s Trivia Questions

1. The first Super Bowl of the 2010s saw the Indianapolis Colts face off against the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV. Both teams were the top seeds in their respective conferences, the first time this had happened since which season?

From Quiz
A Decade Of...Super Bowls

Answer: 1993

The Colts and the Saints had been the two best teams throughout most of the 2009 season. Both teams started the year with 13-0 records, the first time this had happened in the Super Bowl era. (The Colts ended up 14-2 and the Saints went 13-3). As a result, the Colts and Saints were the top seeds in the AFC and NFC respectively, the first time the top seeds had made it to the Super Bowl since the 1993 season when the Dallas Cowboys squared off against the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVIII. While the Colts led 10-6 at half time, the Saints recovered an onside kick to start the second half in what many consider a huge turning point in the game. With the Colts leading 17-13, the Saints took a 24-17 lead in the fourth quarter, sealing the game when Tracy Porter returned a Peyton Manning pass for a 74 yard pick-6. Quarterback Drew Brees, who many believed was robbed of the 2009 NFL MVP, won Super Bowl XLIV MVP instead. He completed 32 of his 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. It was the first Super Bowl victory (and appearance) in Saints history.

2. Which teams were involved in Super Bowl LIII?

From Quiz Super Bowl LIII

Answer: Patriots & Rams

The Patriots reached the Super Bowl by defeating the Chargers and the Chiefs in the earlier playoff games and the Rams had previously won over the Cowboys and the Saints. This game was the 11th Super Bowl appearance for the Patriots, 4th for the Rams (twice while in St.Louis).

3. Which team won the coin toss?

From Quiz Super Bowl LII

Answer: New England Patriots

The Eagles, wearing their green uniforms, got to call the coin toss. They called tails, and the toss came up heads. New England won the toss and elected defer getting the ball until the second half. This meant Philadelphia got the first possession of the game.

4. Which team won the game?

From Quiz Super Bowl LI

Answer: Patriots

Atlanta won the coin toss. Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush performed the coin toss. The Falcons dominated most of the game with a 21-3 score at the half, and a 25 point lead in the third quarter. The Patriots came back from the largest deficit in history to tie the game at 28 and force the first overtime in Super Bowl history. The Patriots won the overtime coin toss and elected to receive the kickoff. James White scored on a 2-yard run to win 34-28. The OT score was the first time the Patriots led in the game.

5. Who performed the National Anthem?

From Quiz Super Bowl XLIX

Answer: Idina Menzel

John Legend performed "America the Beautiful".

6. What stadium hosted Super Bowl XLVIII, its first Super Bowl?

From Quiz Super Bowl XLVIII

Answer: MetLife Stadium

MetLife Stadium is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The New York Giants and New York Jets play their home games there. Super Bowl XLVIII was the first outdoor Super Bowl to ever be hosted by a "cold-weather" city. The previous Super Bowls had been held in warm climates or in temperature-controlled domes. Some people thought that it might snow during the Super Bowl, but the kickoff temperature ended up being a pleasant 49 degrees Fahrenheit (about 9 degrees Celsius).

7. In the wild card playoffs, all the wild card teams except one were eliminated. Which team beat the Washington Redskins in the NFC wild card weekend?

From Quiz NFL 2012 Season Playoffs

Answer: Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks (#5 seed) beat the Washington Redskins (#4 seed) by 24 to 14. The wrong answers, Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis Colts, and Cincinnati Bengals, were the other wild card teams. They were eliminated by their opponents, the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens, and Houston Texans, respectively. Wild card teams are the teams whose performance for the season was not good enough to qualify, but are the best of the remaining, unselected teams. The teams for the playoffs are chosen by performance during the season. Each conference, the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC), consist of 16 teams each. The teams are further divided within the conference into 4 divisions of 4 teams each. By the end of the season, the best team of each division is selected for the playoffs, and, once more based on relative performance, ranked as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th seed within their respective conference. Thus, 8 teams total are competing in the playoffs. Then, 4 wild card teams, the 2 with the highest performance of the remaining teams from the AFC and the 2 with the highest performance of the remaining teams from the NFC, are selected for the playoffs and ranked as 5th or 6th seed within the conference. Teams ranked 3rd and 4th are pitted against the teams of the same conference. The 2 winning teams from each conference then advance to the divisional playoffs along with the 1st and 2nd seeds, who do not play during the wild card playoffs.

8. In what team's stadium was Super Bowl XLVI played?

From Quiz Super Bowl XLVI - Feb. 2012

Answer: Indianapolis Colts

The game was played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN, home of the NFL's Colts. The Giants and Patriots were the teams that played. The Cowboys hosted 2011's Super Bowl in icy conditions.

9. Wildcard weekend saw three of the four lower seeds pull off upset victories. Which team was the only higher seed to win?

From Quiz 2010 NFL Season Playoffs

Answer: Seattle Seahawks

Remarkably, the 7-9 Seahawks during the regular season were the NFCs number four seed on the basis of winning the NFC West. They defeated the Saints 41-36, thanks to a late 67-yard touchdown run by Marshawn Lynch.

10. Super Bowl XLV pitted the NFC Champion Packers against the AFC Champion Steelers. Between the two teams, which team had made the most Super Bowl appearances?

From Quiz Super Bowl XLV: February 2011

Answer: Steelers (8)

Although the Packers took control of the Super Bowls by appearing in Super Bowl I and II, Green Bay made their fifth appearance in 2011. The Steelers appeared in number eight in 2011. Those eight appearances included the seasons of 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1995, 2005, 2008, and 2010. Prior to this game, Pittsburgh was 6-1 while Green Bay was 3-1.

11. Which team won Super Bowl LIII?

From Quiz Super Bowl LIII

12. Which team scored first?

From Quiz Super Bowl LII

Answer: Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles got the ball first. they returned the opening kickoff from the 1-yard line to the 25. Their first play was a 5-yard pass, with Kyle Van Noy making the tackle. Their second play was also a pass, and then on 3rd down and 4-yards to go, they picked up the first down with a 17-yard pass. The next set of downs included a rush for a loss of 2 yards, an incomplete pass, and a 15-yard completion. The third set of downs, inside Patriots territory, included an 8-yard pass, and a rush to set up another first down at the New England 28-yard line. A rush for 6 yards and a long pass play set up the Eagles for a first and goal to go situation on the Patriots 5-yard line. The drive ended with a 4-yard rush, a false start penalty to push the Eagles back to the 6-yard line, and a pair of incomplete passes before the Eagles kicked a field goal for the early 3-0 lead.

13. Which quarterback started his seventh Super Bowl?

From Quiz Super Bowl LI

Answer: Tom Brady

Coming into the game Brady had a 4-2 record in the Super Bowl. Before making his seventh start he already had most of the career passing records for the biggest game of the NFL season. Brady had previously been tied with Mike Lodish for most career Super Bowl games played. Ryan was named the 2016 MVP the day before the Super Bowl.

14. What incident before the Super Bowl was lingering over the New England Patriots?

From Quiz Super Bowl XLIX

Answer: Deflate-Gate

15. The largest margin of victory in a Super Bowl was 45 pts (55-10), by the 49ers over the Broncos in Superbowl XXIV. Only one other team had won by more than the Seahawks' 35-point margin. Who are they?

From Quiz Seahawks Win At Last - 2014 Super Bowl

Answer: Chicago Bears

The 1985 Chicago Bears, widely recognized as the best defensive team ever (perhaps until the 2013 Seahawks), scored that franchise's first Superbowl victory to date with a 36-point (46-10) win over the New England Patriots in Superbowl XX. The Seahawks' 35-point win tied the Dallas Cowboys for the third-largest margin of victory. The Cowboys 52-17 victory over the Buffalo Bills in Superbowl XXVII also saw them scoring the second-highest points total by a winning team (second only to the 55 pt margin by the 49ers in Superbowl XXIV). The Green Bay Packers had played in five Superbowls, winning four of them, but their biggest margin of victory (25 points) came all the way back in Super Bowl I when they defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10. The Steelers had played in more Super Bowls than any other franchise, winning six times in eight appearances. They were never runaway winners in those six wins, though, averaging just a 7.5 margin of victory. Their biggest victory was by just 12 point, 31-19 over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl XIV. Three of the Pittsburgh wins have come by a margin of only four points.

16. Who sang the U.S. National Anthem before the Super Bowl?

From Quiz NFL 2012 Season Playoffs

Answer: 3 points

When the game went into overtime, neither team scored anything until double overtime, when the Ravens won by one field goal to nothing in double overtime. The final score was 38-35. The Ravens went on to beat the New England Patriots for the AFC championship 28-13 on the road.

From Quiz Great Food Receptacle 45 ( A.K.A Super Bowl XLV)

Answer: Green Bay 31, Pittsburgh 25

The Packers were ahead 21-3 in the second quarter. Pittsburgh rallied to be only behind by three points in the third quarter but finally lost by six points.

19. Which stadium hosted Super Bowl XLV?

From Quiz Super Bowl XLV: February 2011

Answer: Cowboy Stadium

Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas, was the site of Super Bowl XLV. The newly built stadium was the dream of Cowboy owner Jerry Jones, and he was like a proud parent to let the world see his new stadium. Although an indoor venue, the NFL was not happy with snow storms in the Dallas area a week before the game, which took away from some hoopla from the pre-game media hype. Sun Life Stadium in Miami hosted Super Bowl XLIV in 2010. The U of P Stadium hosted XLII in 2008, and Reliant opened its doors to Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004.

20. In a rematch of their epic meeting four years earlier, the New York Giants met the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. Which ex-Patriots player performed the coin toss before the game?

From Quiz A Decade Of...Super Bowls

Answer: Curtis Martin

Martin was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2012 and was representing his class in the NFL Hall of Fame when he performed the coin toss. The build-up to the game was centred around the theme of revenge after the Giants had defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. The Patriots had a 13-3 regular season record while the Giants had gone 9-7. The game followed an eerily similar path to the previous Super Bowl between the two franchises with the Giants winning the game after a clutch fourth quarter drive from Eli Manning. This time, the Giants won 21-17, despite a last second Hail Mary attempt by the Patriots that was almost caught by Rpb Gronkowski. The win was the fourth Super Bowl championship in Giants history and their second with Manning at quarterback. Manning won a second Super Bowl MVP, becoming only the fifth player to achieve this in Super Bowl history. (Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Tom Brady) It was the last playoff win of Manning's Giants career.

21. Which city was host to Super Bowl LIII?

From Quiz Super Bowl LIII

Answer: Atlanta

The game was played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta has hosted two previous Super Bowls in 1994 and 2000. 22. Which player was responsible for scoring the first points?

From Quiz Super Bowl LII

Answer: Jake Elliott

Elliott, a rookie kicker for the Eagles, nailed a 25-yard field goal with 7:55 to play in the opening quarter. The drive was 14 plays long. Elliott was signed after a week one injury to the regular Eagles kicker. Both Elliott and Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski played their college football at the University of Memphis, just 11 years apart. Gostkowski kicked a 26-yard field goal to tie the score with 4:17 left in the opening quarter.

23. What was the result of the first drive?

From Quiz Super Bowl LI

Answer: Patriots punt

Deion Jones, a rookie linebacker stopped a run on third down and a yard to go to force the Patriots punt. First down was an incomplete pass and second down was a pass from Tom Brady to Julian Edelman. Devonta Freeman had a 37-yard run on the Falcons first play. Atlanta also had to punt to end their first drive.

24. Which team scored first and how?

From Quiz Super Bowl XLIX

Answer: New England Patriots (a touchdown pass)

New England scored first, on a touchdown pass in the second quarter. Tom Brady, the quarterback, threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to receiver Brandon LaFell. There were not any fumble recovery touchdowns in the game, and it is impossible for a Super Bowl to end in a tie.

25. The scoring began early in Super Bowl XLVIII. Within twelve seconds of opening kickoff, a team had scored. What happened?

From Quiz Super Bowl XLVIII

Answer: Seattle got a safety

On the first play of Denver's first drive, Denver center Manny Ramirez's snap flew over quarterback Peyton Manning's head and into the end zone. Running back Knowshon Moreno recovered the ball in his own end zone where he was tackled for a safety (giving Seattle 2 points). It was the quickest score in Super Bowl history (the previous record was 14 seconds n Super Bowl XLI, when the Chicago Bears returned the kick-off for a TD -- Indianapolis Colts recovered to win 29-17 in February 2007).

26. How did the first points get scored in the game?

From Quiz Super Bowl XLVI - Feb. 2012

Tom Brady was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone with 8:52 left in the first quarter, giving the Giants the lead 2-0.

27. Which teams offense scored more in Super Bowl XLV? (Extra points after touchdowns count as offensive points.)

From Quiz Great Food Receptacle 45 ( A.K.A Super Bowl XLV)

Answer: Tie

Each teams offense scored 25 points. The Packers defense score six points on an interception return for a touchdown.

28. Who was the first player to score in Super Bowl XLV?

From Quiz Super Bowl XLV: February 2011

Answer: Jordy Nelson

After Christina Aguilera started the Super Bowl off with her own rendition of the National Anthem, and although messed up the lyrics, the Packers kicked off to the Steelers. After some possession changes, the Packers scored in the first quarter on a pass play from Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson down the right sideline, beating Steelers defensive back, William Gay.

29. Who sang the national anthem at Super Bowl LIII?

From Quiz Super Bowl LIII

Answer: Gladys Knight

Gladys Knight sang a stirring rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' prior to the start of the contest. She is known as the 'Empress of Soul', recipient of seven Grammy Awards and was born in Atlanta. Her career spanned from the 1960s to the 1980s and produced many hits with her backing band, the Pips.

30. Who scored the first touchdown of the game?

From Quiz Super Bowl LII

Answer: Alshon Jeffrey

Jeffrey caught a 34-yard touchdown pass with 2:34 to play in the opening quarter. After the failed extra point, the Eagles lead was 9-3. The pass came from Eagles quarterback Nick Foles. Foles was starting in place of the injured Carson Wentz.
