The Colts and the Saints had been the two best teams throughout most of the 2009 season. Both teams started the year with 13-0 records, the first time this had happened in the Super Bowl era. (The Colts ended up 14-2 and the Saints went 13-3). As a result, the Colts and Saints were the top seeds in the AFC and NFC respectively, the first time the top seeds had made it to the Super Bowl since the 1993 season when the Dallas Cowboys squared off against the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVIII. While the Colts led 10-6 at half time, the Saints recovered an onside kick to start the second half in what many consider a huge turning point in the game. With the Colts leading 17-13, the Saints took a 24-17 lead in the fourth quarter, sealing the game when Tracy Porter returned a Peyton Manning pass for a 74 yard pick-6. Quarterback Drew Brees, who many believed was robbed of the 2009 NFL MVP, won Super Bowl XLIV MVP instead. He completed 32 of his 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. It was the first Super Bowl victory (and appearance) in Saints history.

Then, 4 wild card teams, the 2 with the highest performance of the remaining teams from the AFC and the 2 with the highest performance of the remaining teams from the NFC, are selected for the playoffs and ranked as 5th or 6th seed within the conference. Teams ranked 3rd and 4th are pitted against the teams of the same conference. The 2 winning teams from each conference then advance to the divisional playoffs along with the 1st and 2nd seeds, who do not play during the wild card playoffs.

They were never runaway winners in those six wins, though, averaging just a 7.5 margin of victory. Their biggest victory was by just 12 point, 31-19 over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl XIV. Three of the Pittsburgh wins have come by a margin of only four points.

Martin was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2012 and was representing his class in the NFL Hall of Fame when he performed the coin toss. The build-up to the game was centred around the theme of revenge after the Giants had defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. The Patriots had a 13-3 regular season record while the Giants had gone 9-7. The game followed an eerily similar path to the previous Super Bowl between the two franchises with the Giants winning the game after a clutch fourth quarter drive from Eli Manning. This time, the Giants won 21-17, despite a last second Hail Mary attempt by the Patriots that was almost caught by Rpb Gronkowski. The win was the fourth Super Bowl championship in Giants history and their second with Manning at quarterback. Manning won a second Super Bowl MVP, becoming only the fifth player to achieve this in Super Bowl history. (Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Tom Brady) It was the last playoff win of Manning's Giants career.
