Wide World of Sports Trivia Questions

31. In 1982, the VFL's (now the AFL) South Melbourne Football Club relocated to Sydney, and adopted which nickname?

From Quiz
Nevermore

Answer: Swans

The South Melbourne franchise started back in 1874, and moved to Sydney as the VFL tried to expand out of the Melbourne area. Loaded with debt, and a team that lost 29 straight games in 1972-73, the VFL presented the club with an ultimatum: move to Sydney or disband. In Sydney, the Swans won the Grand Final in 2005, their first Premiership since 1933.

32. The American sprinter Marion Jones, while saying sorry in a statement to the press in 2007, got all upset. What was she saying sorry for that caused her to be in distress?

From Quiz I'm Crying and I'm Not Chopping Onions!

Answer: For lying about her use of banned substances during her career

Marion Jones held a press conference in 2007 after admitting to the use of banned substances in the BALCO case. She openly wept while apologizing for her use of banned substances and lying to federal investigators, friends and family. Marion was a medal winner at the 2000 Sydney Olympics; she handed back her medals that she won at the 2000 games and her times were stricken off the record books. In 2008 she was sentenced to six months in prison for her use of banned substances and her involvement in a cheque fraud case. Marion did try to restart a sporting career in 2010 in the WNBA playing for the Tulsa Shock team, though they waived her contract just after a year.

33. This swimmer was 17 years old at the 2012 Olympics, when she won 5 medals, 4 of them golds. She represented the United States and medaled in backstroke, freestyle, and relay events - and even met Justin Bieber in the bargain. Who is she?

From Quiz Alpha Female

Answer: Missy Franklin

Missy Franklin, along with Ryan Lochte, were the swimming superstars that the USA fielded to the 2012 Olympics, and Franklin's slew of medals put her up there with the top swimmers of all time; and all that based on her first Olympics!

34. In the times of Ancient Greece, pankration was a sport played by some. Tell me which combined sports were used? (They did not use gloves, surprisingly!)

From Quiz Sport-icus!

Answer: Boxing/Wrestling

Pankration was a very grueling sport which combined both boxing and wrestling. In the sport the rules banned biting and gouging any opponent in the nose, mouth or eyes with fingernails. Punching and kicking anywhere on the body was permitted.

35. The first recorded boxing match in England was organised by the 2nd Duke of Albemarle between his butcher and which member of his household staff?

From Quiz Engraved in Gold

Answer: Butler

In this instance the butler didn't do it - and the butcher was the clear winner. This match took place in 1681. Boxing has been around as a sport since the ancient Olympic Games at least. It has undergone many changes since then, involving rules, styles and techniques. Because of the danger to a boxer's life this sport poses, it has been under increasing pressure since the 1980s by medical associations in various countries to be completely banned.

36. Which sportsman, usually described as the greatest basketballer of all time, liked to wear special shorts under his uniform every time he played?

From Quiz Boxers or Briefs?

Answer: Michael Jordan

During the time he helped take the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships (1991-92-93 and 1996-97-98), Jordan always wore his shorts from the University of North Carolina underneath his team uniform. He believed these brought him luck (UNC won the NCAA championship in 1982). He also won two basketball gold medals at the Olympics (1984 Los Angeles and 1992 Barcelona). Born in 1963, Michael Jordan is described on the NBA website as the greatest basketball ever to take the court.

37. In which game do they use a sliotar?

From Quiz Sports Equipment Beginning with S

Answer: Irish games of hurling or camogie

A sliotar is made of solid cork, wrapped in leather. It's about the same size as a tennis ball. It's used in the Irish team game of hurling, which has been described as "the world's fastest field team game". This game is played with a stick (a hurley) that looks like a large hockey stick. It can also involve either slapping the sliotar with one's hands, or passing it with the feet as well. At certain plays in the game, the sliotar, which is not allowed to be carried in the hand for more than four steps, has to be balanced on the end of the hurley while running with it. That sounds like fun. The female version of the game is called camogie. There is also another version of the game, called shinty, but this is played mainly in Scotland.

38. To which country would you travel if you wanted to see the sport known as caber tossing?

From Quiz Sports on Earth

Answer: Scotland

The caber toss is just one of the unique and unusual athletic events that can be seen every year at the Scottish Highland Games. It consists of tossing a long wooden pole. The typical caber is almost 20 ft (6m) tall and weighs around 175 lbs. (79kg). Scores are measured by viewing the tossed caber as though it was the hour hand on a clock. A perfect throw faces straight ahead of the thrower is gives twelve points. The length of the throw and height of the arc are also figured into the mix. This age old sport descended from the practice of throwing logs across chasms so that you could walk safely across.

39. If this commentator gets more excited he's going to blow my microphone fuse. There's something on fire? What? "There's nothing wrong with the car except that it's on fire." Who murmured that into my ear during his coverage of Formula One?

From Quiz Can You Hear That?

Answer: Murray Walker

Murray Walker was famous for his excited commentary and his many gaffes, which led to his catchphrase "Unless I'm very much mistaken" - which he often was. Not because he didn't know his sport, but largely because his excitement made him say the wrong words about the wrong thing in the wrong order at the wrong time. As Walker said himself "I don't make mistakes. I make prophecies which immediately turn out to be wrong." Which was certainly true when he commented "I don't want to tempt fate but Damon Hill is now only half a lap from his first Grand Prix win and... and he's slowing down, Damon Hill is slowing down... he's... he's STOPPED!"

58. Relays in athletics rely on a perfect understanding between teammates to ensure the baton doesn't get dropped. Which event is traditionally the final track event at an athletics event?

From Quiz Perfect Understanding

Answer: Men's 4 x 400 metres

Baton passing in the 4 x 400 metres race is less fraught than in the 4 x 100 version, where seeing the baton falling to the ground is a fairly regular event. The longer distance does give the runners on later legs a better chance to grasp the baton safely, although collisions do sometimes occur. The 4 x 400 can sometimes be a procession, but the event can also be an exciting end to a meeting.
