Answer: Glasgow

The Commonwealth Games, formerly known as the British Empire Games, are a multi-sport event held every four years. In a 2007 vote, Glasgow, Scotland, beat off the challenge of Abuja, Nigeria, to host the 2014 event. This was the third time that a Scottish city was selected as host, Edinburgh having held the games in 1970 and 1986.

Answer: Gaelic Football

The Sam Maguire Cup is awarded to the winners of the All-Ireland final, the premier competition in Gaelic Football. The final is held each September at Croke Park in Dublin. In 2009, Kerry defeated Cork to win the title for a record 36th time.

Answer: Gorillas

Based in Pittsburgh, Kansas, PSU are members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, an NCAA Division 2 level conference. The only NCAA school to use the Gorillas nickname, PSU were Division 2 national champions in football three times in the 20th century.

Grasshopper Club were founded in 1886, and play home games at the Letzigrund in Zurich. They won their first title in 1898 and then won the title at least oince in every decade of the 20th century, except for the 1910s and the 1960s. Their first choice colours are blue and white halved shirts and white shorts. None of the other clubs mentioned actually exist!

Answer: David Graham

Born in Australia in 1946, Graham spent the majority of his professional career on the American PGA tour. He defeated Ben Crenshaw in a play-off to win the 1979 PGA at Oakland Hills. At Merion, in 1981, he became the first Australian to win the US Open.
6. Which of the following people has won a World Athletics Championship gold medal and a Superbowl ring?

Answer: Willie Gault

Gault was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1983. Before his first season at Soldier Field, he was part of the USA team that won the 4x100m relay at Helsinki. He then resumed his NFL career, as a wide receiver, and helped the Bears defeat the New England Patriots in Superbowl XX.
7. Which tennis player won a "Golden Slam" in 1988?

Answer: Steffi Graf

Graf, born in Germany in 1969, became the first player to win all four grand slam events and an Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year. She began 1988 by defeating Chris Evert to win the Australian Open. She whitewashed Natalia Zvereva 6-0 6-0 in the final of the French Open, before recovering from a set down to defeat Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon.

At the US Open, Gabriela Sabatini was her victim in the final; and finally, in Seoul, she won the Olympic gold medal match, with Sabatini once again the runner-up.
8. Which baseball legend was nicknamed "The Iron Horse"?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Gehrig made his debut with the New York Yankees in 1923. Between 1st June 1925 and 30th April 1939 he appeared in a then-record 2,130 consecutive MLB games. His career was ended when he contracted amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which has since become better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. On 4th July 1939 Gehrig addressed a packed house at Yankee Stadium and famously described himself as "The Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth".
9. Which ice hockey legend is quite simply known as "The Great One"?

Answer: Wayne Gretzky

Gretzky was born in Brantford, Ontario, in 1961. He made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers in 1979-80, and ended the season with the Hart Memorial Trophy for league MVP, the first of eight consecutive such awards. He would win the Stanley Cup four times with the Oilers, before being traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988.

He went on to appear for the St Louis Blues and New York Rangers before retiring in 1999.
10. Which NASCAR driver won four Winston Cup Series, as the season-long champion, between 1995 and 2001?

Answer: Jeff Gordon

Gordon made his Winston Cup debut with the Hendrick Motorsports team in 1992. He won his first Series title in 1995, by seeing off Dale Earnhardt in the final race of the season. He won again in 1997, 1998 and 2001.
