Tom awakens, having been knocked out, as he's dragged through an unfinished house. When he looks up, Ian's already there eating burgers to keep his strength up. It turns out that they're in Jill's house as her and Ian's father was developing it and, technically, it was all left to her. Ian makes a comment about Tom getting half of it in the divorce, but it's likely he won't live long enough to get it. Ian admits that he loves Jill in a pure and uncomplicated way because they have a fundamental connection and Tom is just too much of a safe choice. When Ian doubles over in pain from his strain, Tom rushes out and Tall Boy swiftly pursues.

When Jillian was younger, she used to stay up all night drawing pictures of Pretzel Jack because she missed her father. One night, when her mother sent her to bed early, she laid down and wished really hard for something to be better, and when she opened her eyes there was a small door in the back of her closet. She got up and opened it, and in the blackness there, as she stepped back, Pretzel Jack emerged, tumbling before her and contorting to make her laugh. In the present day, Jack appears before her in the basement and the two embrace before Jack joins the shell of his former self and falls asleep on the floor. Jillian closes the door behind her as she and Ian head upstairs.

Jillian packs a bag after she hears the news and when she hears a noise coming from downstairs, she finds that Ian has let himself in. Apparently, the dog had gotten out, and he was bringing him back; the door was left open. Jillian worries that Tom was attacked by the same person who killed Jason, so Ian offers to drive her to the hospital. Tom is fine, at least when they arrive, but he seems a bit out of sorts to see Ian with his wife. It leads to Ian's quick departure, though something is clearly off. Jillian asks Tom about the floating meditation and he admits he should've told her. There's no time to talk about it, however, since the detectives arrive with Ms. Moss' camera footage and the knowledge that Tom is linked to Moss through Sarah Winters.

Jillian and Tom both attend Jason's funeral though Jill can't get the image of Pretzel Jack out of her head. In the coming days, Tom seems distraught. Jill continues to see images of a door in her childhood closet and remembers seeing someone emerge from it. Taking a drive, Jill ends up stopping by at her old childhood home and, surprisingly, the owner invites her in.

Tom urges Jillian to talk about the creepy drawings she used to make about a flexible man named Pretzel Jack who she made into a flip book when she was younger after seeing a contortionist at the circus.

Tom tries to call Jill but because her phone is dead, he can't get through to her. When he puts away his phone he spends a bit of time with the dog, not really knowing its origins. Jill, looking out at the water, just misses seeing a figure turn the corner of the house behind her and when she goes around to investigate, she finds herself circling back to where she started.

Tom and Jillian end up at the hardware store to pick up more paint and, while in another aisle, Jillian gets nervous spying on Tom speaking to another woman. They get back home and Jillian checks through the mail, immediately tearing up a hand-written letter from Bill Hope. She asks Tom about the woman at the store-- Sarah Winters-- and it turns out that Tom worked on her master bedroom a while back. Jillian asks if he slept with her. He explains that he's not like her father. That night, as the lights flicker next to their bed, Jillian has horrible nightmares.

As soon as Jill discovers that the Tom she's found is not her husband, a chase commences. Ian breaks his link with the fake Tom to tend to his pain and exhaustion, but Jill is sent on a run around the ghost neighbourhood. She rushes to an open field, upends a sign, and uses its post to impale the creature in pursuit, plunging the makeshift stake through its chest until the real Tom arrives. He confirms that he's the real Tom by cutting himself and showing his real blood.

Tom, letting the dog back into Ian's house, lets himself in as well, calling Ian's name in case he may be home. Checking the fridge, he finds nothing more than meat in a jar and bottles of muscle syrup. Checking the basement, he finds several small doors in the wall and shoeboxes of animals Ian created, failing in his attempts. Jill, meanwhile, heads back into Ian's cabin following what she does not know and in doing so she hears breathing from a tall cabinet in the main room. Hesitantly she opens it to find no one inside, but she does find a stuffed dog and it sparks a long hidden memory from within. She closes the cabinet as Ian finishes making breakfast.

Telling Tom the truth, Jillian says that she used to lie awake at night thinking of all the bad things that would happen to her and her family, and she came up with Pretzel Jack after a trip to the circus. After her dad left, Pretzel Jack became real; he walked out of a little door in the back of her bedroom closet, not unlike the door in their basement. He slept under her bed until she and her mother moved away. When she visited her childhood house, she found the door and opened it to find Pretzel Jack's old body, and when she brings Tom down behind the door in their basement, she reveals it to him, having brought it home with her. But somehow, he's returned to comfort her and he's more than certainly real.

Out at a park, Tom hands a toy Gumby to a small child in a stroller before quickly leaving. The mother finds it and quickly rushes her child away. The owner of Jillian's childhood home, meanwhile, takes her cat for a walk while Jillian watches from her car, waiting for the right moment to sneak into the woman's house with a hidden, spare key. She races up to the bedroom and into the closet to check for what she knows is probably there, and when she tears away the wallpaper, sure enough, she finds a blue door with a white handprint on it hidden behind a thin layer of drywall. When she opens it, there's a body inside.

Over breakfast, Jill asks Ian why he made the particular dog he did, and he explains that he doesn't know why. Jill, however, recalls having a stuffed animal like the dog when she was really little. He can't explain though. Jill asks Ian what his mother was like, claiming that she's curious to know more about her. She passed away earlier in the year though, according to him. Her husband was cheating on her though. Jill suggests she's ready to go home and Ian agrees to bring her back. Tom, searching Ian's basement further, finds pictures Ian drew in his youth and digs more to find photographs, some of which contain Jill and her parents. With these, it's easy to connect the dots. Ian and Jill share the same father, but different mothers.

With Tom freed from Jack's grasp under the water of the pool, Ian tells Jill that she's not done. With Jack in the palms of her hands, she needs to think of a single word-- 'Crush'. And when she does this, she'll kill Jack and it will feel like she's crushing herself. Nonetheless, as Ian says, she needs to power through. She does, and Pretzel Jack explodes into pieces under the water of the pool. Upstairs, both Ian and Jill collapse. Sarah emerges at the sound of the explosion to assist Tom, and as she helps him up, Jillian rises to see them leave.

After telling Tom her secret, she asks him to tell his, and she reveals that she answered his online call from Sarah and heard the baby crying. Tom tells her that Sarah is married and her husband thinks that the kid is his, and knows nothing about Tom. As Jillian gets angrier and angrier, Pretzel Jack awakens from his place under another house and races through the woods. To deal with their issues, Tom and Jillian decide to go to counselling together with Jillian's former psychiatrist, Dr. Carnacki. He recommends trauma therapy, but he suggests that imaginary friends seem real to children, and should not exist. This talk leads back to whether or not they're facing Pretzel Jack himself or someone who's simply dressing up as the figure. Once again, Jillian gets angry. In mere moments the lights flicker and a noise is heard from outside the office. Both Jillian and Tom fear the worst, but Dr. Carnacki insists on looking out the door to confirm that there's nothing wrong. Sure enough, there's nothing out there.

Tom later asks Jillian if everything is okay asks her to tell him what she's thinking, but she doesn't really let up (despite his urging). He asks why she went to Jason's house the night he was killed as well, but she doesn't tell that either. Tom gets up and heads out of the bedroom, and when Jillian gets out of bed she doesn't notice Pretzel Jack walking through the adjacent ensuite bathroom. She does, however, find him staring at her through the crack in the bathroom door. When Tom arrives to protect her, brandishing a knife, it appears that there's no one there with them.

Instead of ceasing all attempts to open the mystery door and against Tom and Jillian's best wishes, Jason grabs a shotgun from his truck and brings that into the basement in an attempt to open the door. Each shot causes the lights in the house to flicker uncontrollably until, eventually, they turn out. They all don flashlights and, to their surprise, the door still holds but the knob can be wrenched free. Jillian does this herself, creating the hole, opening the latch, and pulling the door to reveal a staircase descending deeper than their basement.

Ian continues to try to convince Jill that they would be perfect together; their connection continuously brings them closer and they're both special for it. Besides that, they can't escape. Ian sends Tall Boy after them, forcing them to seek refuge in a house, and Jill decides that she has to do something to save them both. Tom accepts that he did some wrong by her and apologizes for what he's done and he helps her out, urging her to bring out Pretzel Jack like he did with her, subconsciously, last time he appeared. Tom goes out alone to buy Jill more time and Jill heads to the attic to get to work.

On the drive home, Ian suggests to Jill that it might not even be the best thing to return quite yet because of her training, but she doesn't respond until they get back. They pull into Ian's driveway just as Tom passes by the front window. As they head inside, neither of them see the figure crawl out of Ian's truck bed. They find Tom in the kitchen with a table full of Ian's photos and he immediately asks why Ian was at the motel the previous night. Ian initially lies and claims he wasn't, but all of the evidence points to him, and Jill reveals that she knows who he is. With nowhere to hide, Ian is revealed, out in the open, as Jill's half-brother.

While Tom, Jillian, and Dr. Carnacki check the hall, however, a noise is heard from back inside the office and Pretzel Jack manages to scale the building, open the window, and tumble inside. Although Tom and Jillian warn the therapist to stay away from the murderer, Dr. Carnacki steps into the room and threatens to call the police. Tom and Jill run instead, and as Dr. Carnacki meets his end at the killer's hands, they rush out to the parking lot just as Ian pulls up in his vehicle and drives them away with Pretzel Jack in pursuit. Ian seems to know something they don't, though, because he says Jillian brought Jack to life because she's special.

Tom, Jillian, and Jason peer down into the stairwell behind the door as the lights in the house turn back on, but they still need their flashlights to see deeper inside. At the bottom of the stairs, they find another door, this one with a white handprint on it at face level. This one is locked as well, and Jason intends to shoot the lock off. He's stopped though. They realize that the door leads in the direction of the neighbours' house and they decide to check in with them first. It turns out to be a PhD student renting from the owners, the O'Connells, who've ben there since Tom was a kid, and he doesn't know anything about it. He does agree that it's all very interesting though, since it ties into his psychology research.

Jill sits down and concentrates hard on the task at hand, recalling memories of her childhood and trying to reform the door to reveal Pretzel Jack. It doesn't work though, and Tall Boy enters the house with his power saw in hand. Tom, knocking on doors and walls, manages to distract Tall Boy long enough for Jill to infuse her mind with memories of Tom, and doing this, she finally makes the door, opening it as Tall Boy reaches the attic. And sure enough, Pretzel Jack flips out of the portal. It takes no time for Jack to gain the upper hand, grab the saw, and slice through Tall Boy's head. Outside, Ian feels every moment splayed out on the ground.

Ian believes that he was still in the right for contacting Jill the way he did, even if she's angry that he lied, and he insists that he made a grand gesture for her, bringing her and Tom out to the garage and revealing that he killed their father. When they open the garage door they find several copied and created dogs, all eating at the body on the floor. Ian suggests that they're on the edge of something and they can all move forward if she wants to. It's all up to her. She takes Tom's phone and calls the detectives, bringing them to Ian's house to deal with the situation. During this, Ian calls off his Tall Boy, preventing him from causing harm. When the detectives arrive, Ian admits to murdering his father, Jason, the Ms. Moss, and the former owners of the house, the O'Connells. He willingly goes with the cops.

Jillian gets home from her therapist's office and finds Tom heading out, allegedly to Jason's place. Instead, he heads to a woman's house. Jillian, having followed him, finds this out with her own eyes. She heads home soon after and pours herself a drink before a loud crash sounds from down in the basement. Alone, she heads down and opens the closed door on the far wall. The stairs are still there, but this time, when she descends them, she places her own hand on the handprint on the far door...and it unlocks. So she opens it. And her flashlight goes out.

Tom gets home to find his phone ringing on a table and when he answers, it's Bill Hope, Jill's father, trying to locate her. It's an emergency, he claims. There's a lot she needs to know about their family and he's at the Mill Road Inn. At the inn, Bill answers the door to find Ian who, not-so-cryptically, says that he wasn't the kid Bill was expecting. The two of them argue over some of the past transgressions Ian made and Bill tries to convince him to leave his daughter-- Ian's half-sister-- alone. Tom, meanwhile, heads out while trying to contact Jill. Unfortunately, Ian has her phone with him. Ian doesn't even notice. He's too busy getting angry with his father and summoning something from the other side. The door materializes behind Bill without his noticing and something emerges from it to kill him.

Ian reassures Jillian that it's possible for her to control not only the creation and destruction of the door, but Pretzel Jack as well. Even if she flew around the world, he could re-manifest at any time upon her return (if he died). The three of them decide that they will ultimately need to kill Pretzel Jack by trapping him, so they head back to Tom and Jill's basement and ponder Jack's motivation. Jill claims that Jack protects her from disloyalty, deception, and betrayal, so to tempt him to come forth is for Jill to think about Tom and her relationship and bring forth the rough parts of their marriage, laying their issues bare.

Jillian and Ian return home and Ian encourages Jill to finish her conversation with him. He tries to make her feel better by saying that when he was young, he also had an imaginary friend that he drew. The man he drew, however, was 'The Tall Man', and all of his Crayola crayons were his friends. As their talk continues, Ian asks Jill about her father who, as they both know, still makes subdivisions in the city. The topic is a sore sport for Jill and she departs soon after.

Tom arrives to find the mess that Tall Boy has created and Ian's creation stares him down. Tom, moving quickly, dodges the creature's blade, rushes into the room, and locks the door behind him. Jill, grabbing her knife, stabs Ian in the chest while he tries to maintain control over Tall Boy and before Ian can do anything, the couple is on top of him, trying to bring him down with all they can. Tall Boy makes it into the room with his weapon and he lunges at them, but he hits Ian instead, impaling him on the door. All of the other doors he created disappear before their eyes. Tom and Jill remain together. Happily, they raise their child together. One night, a door appears in the child's wall as the toddler cries in its crib. It opens.
