When they tried to get in, none of them knew that Theo was on the other side, somehow in another room altogether-- her dance studio. Trying to follow up writing his book about Hill House, Steven is comforted by a now-pregnant Leigh. She urges him to break past his writer's block. Steven and Hugh pull up to the house to find Luke's stolen vehicle already there. They smell gas when they enter. If Luke is there, they know where to look. Hearing banging inside, they rush down the hall. It's only when Steven turns around that he finds the tall man with the bowler hat following.

Before the storm, Hugh woke Olivia up from a nap on the couch, both of the twins were sleeping with her. She told Hugh she wished she could keep them frozen in time forever. Olivia was surprised to have slept through the storm since she hated them so much. Mrs. Dudley, who loved the relaxing nature of storms, wished her daughter would like them more. Olivia recounted a memory from her childhood when, during a horrible storm, she witnessed black stones falling from the sky. It stopped as fast as it started. She always believed she brought it on after her father's death.

Luke sees the body across the room and decides it's too hard to cope, so the family takes their time and meets him in the other room.

When Nell was fast asleep, Olivia snuck away to head to bed herself, and that's when Nell woke up again, this time unable to move, while the bent-neck lady hovered above her.

She speaks to a young girl named Kelsey about her anxieties regarding a figure named Mr. Smiley, who lives under her house and sometimes visits her with his big smile. Theo reassures Kelsey that building up walls is okay until she is ready to open up; Kelsey says it would be okay because Mr. Smiley understood her. Theo is assured that Kelsey's foster siblings are flourishing, but her struggles with Mr. Smiley seem to be holding her back. In school she started strong, but over time she had an obvious decline. Theo vows to get to the bottom of it.

Nell asked how long they had to live there, and her father said it was only until they finished the renovations and sold it off. After he left the room, he checked in on the other kids and headed back to bed. Nell woke up once more in the night to find the bedroom door open. She never noticed the figure watching her from the shadows.

The man with the bowler hat enters behind them and Hugh asks his son to keep focused on his face. The man stares intently at Steven, craning downwards to do so, before departing. And then they run upstairs, straight to the Red Room, to bang on the door. It's always been locked, Steven says, and when Hugh turns his back, Steven sees it's actually open; Luke is inside on the ground. When he enters to help his brother, the door slams closed behind him. Putting down the work on his new book, Leigh asks where Steven is and he explains when he entered the red room. She asks if that's when Luke died, but Steve is confused by this. Luke didn't die; he was alive on the floor. And then he died, Leigh says. He needs to say it. The door closed, Steven says, but he can't say what happened because he doesn't remember how he got out of the house.

Olivia, sitting down in the study with a pot of tea, picked up a book and took a relaxing moment to read. Sipping at her drink, however, she felt the immediate pain of a migraine and headed downstairs, passing a clock repairman along the way. While fetching medication from the kitchen, she came across Shirley and Luke arguing about Luke giving clothes away to Abigail, the girl who lived in the woods. Amongst these items were a box of buttons she gave to Nell and a big bowler hat that Luke asked for. When he put it on, Nell assured their parents that he liked it. When asked how she knew, she explained "it's a twin thing". While the kids ran off, Olivia donned a shawl and had some severe deja vu, sensing the way the room library used to be as though she'd been there.

Hugh passed her a box to toss, but somehow she knew that the contents inside were of value. Sure enough, it was a rare vintage of wine. On the same day, Theo and her mother both noted that there were spots in the house-- small pockets, really-- that were colder than others. To Theo though, the whole house was cold.

Steven Crain, an accomplished author in his adult life, works by meeting with and interviewing those who have experienced traumatizing paranormal events in their lives. He meets with a woman who recounts a night she slept in her bedroom only to be awakened by the frightening ghost of her late husband. He hears her out and thanks her for her story, suggesting that he may need to stay in the room to understand more. When he looks around her living room a bit later, he sees all of his books on a shelf. The homeowner suggests how much she appreciates his works but Steven admits to her that he's never actually seen a ghost, and if she saw her husband, then it's more than he's ever seen.

When Olivia stepped into the morgue, she didn't know it was from the basement of Shirley's future funeral home. She stepped forward to find an adult Nell lying on the slab before her and, in shock, she turned around to see Luke's body, dead of an overdose, lying on the floor. Behind her, Nell rose from her slab and grabbed a pair of scissors, cutting her lips open to cry for her mother. Olivia, fell out of her vision when she collapsed to the ground. She told Hugh what she saw that night, in bed, and he believed it to be a dream she had dozing while reading. At this point, Olivia's headaches were almost constant.

It's the perfect opportunity for Hugh to ask Steven about his and Leigh's relationship considering the split. It takes quite a bit of time talking about Olivia before Steven is at all able to open up a bit. Hugh's story about their twenty year relationship (fifteen of which were in marriage) wasn't all roses, but there was love there, even when they were fighting.

Hugh, Mr. Dudley, and Steven descended into the basement of the house to discover that mold and water had already sunk into the cellar-- three storeys down-- which implied that there could be no way it was the storm. Water had pooled even deeper; the damage was particularly extensive. Taking a photo into a hole in the cellar wall, Hugh believed it to be black mold and sent Steven upstairs. That's when he and Mr. Dudley heard something in the walls-- maybe rats. Looking down at the picture, he saw nothing but the almost mistakable outline of a man's shadow. The whole situation could have ruined them. Hugh, early for the funeral, heads to the guesthouse to talk to Theo. She lets him in for coffee. He suggests that Luke has seemed to have gotten himself on the right track. Theo, however, might have made herself a bit worse. She apologizes to her father for not trying as hard as she should have. Hugh realizes this might be a bit more complicated than just Steven's money. Neither Hugh nor Olivia expect that outcome.

At the wedding, Nell told Steven that they would be moving out west to follow Arthur's work. She explained that Luke might also head out to join them. During the wedding, she saw the image of her mother watching on next to Hugh. She embraced Steven, turning away from the ghostly figure. None of the life changes cured her sleep paralysis though. One night, eight months after the wedding and after moving to Los Angeles, Arthur tried to help her control her panic while she suffered an episode. He got up to turn on the light, but as he rose he suffered from a fatal brain aneurysm. Nell could do nothing but watch as the bent-neck lady stared from the window. When Nell finally regained control, she could do nothing but crawl to Arthur's body. He was dead and she was back.

In the present day, Luke talks about the problems he's had in his years with his friend, Joey, who's been going through the motions of breaking addiction alongside him. His goal is to make amends with people in his past and, unfortunately, that means most of his family. As he goes down the list, he struggles to come to the idea of where to start. It's clear that Joey is struggling though. She's nine months in on her sobriety and it's not easy. The owner of the half-way house tells Luke that his brother called and she encourages him to reach out; it's clear that some members of his family still believe in him. Nell certainly did. Luke abruptly awakens at 12:03 reaching for his neck. When he sits up he sees Nell in his room before him and she whispers one word: "Go."

The night after her vision, Olivia woke up from her sleep to see someone creeping around the bedroom door frame. She tried to wake Hugh, insisting someone was in the house, but when he didn't wake up she looked out into the hall herself. She didn't know that whoever it was was standing next to the bed, looking over her husband. When the figure left the room, it motioned her to the sitting room claiming it used to be her own drawing room and then a nursery. Olivia, confused about this dream, engages with the woman, discussing her fears of losing her children. The woman lost her little girl once; she choked and died. Her little boy died, losing the ability to move and see over time. But it was a dream, a 'screaming meemie'. Olivia, looking over her own twins, couldn't see the woman's true form. The woman asked her, what if her own kids had their own bad dreams, the worst 'screaming meemies', that they couldn't wake up from? The woman, who Olivia doesn't recognize as Poppy Hill, whispers the plan in her ear.

At the funeral home, Kevin takes the kids out trick-or-treating. He asks if they can chat when he gets back; she says he can't very well do that from his hotel room. Instead, she stays home and starts to put together the pieces of her broken model. Despite shutting out the porch lights, she hears the doorbell several times and, angrily, she heads out to hand out candy but there's no one there. In the car, Hugh admits he wouldn't know what he would do if he lost anyone else. It's why he had to hop into the car with Steven. When Steven has kids, he says, things will change for him. Steven claims he won't have kids.

Hugh found damage in the walls of the master bedroom, the library, the parlour, and the basement. The water lines didn't even account for it. None of the floorplans and work records made sense either. If the Crains couldn't fix it fast, then they would lose all the money on the house flip. Hugh brought in an inspector who, upon prodding, suggested that maybe the leak was originating in the one room they never checked-- the one with the red door, and because they had no key-- but there were no rat droppings in the walls, so the culprit wouldn't be that. At the funeral, Hugh watches as Steven and Leigh exhibit obvious tension. Olivia tells him not to be sad for his son's marriage and not to blame himself. When Hugh sits to talk to Luke, he congratulates him on his ninety days of sobriety. Olivia asks him not to make the day about anyone except Nell.

After Arthur's death, Nell started seeing a therapist about her grief and her recurring night terrors, explaining that the bent-neck lady barely appeared to her after Arthur helped her...and then she killed him. Nell blamed Hill House. She didn't expect the doctor to believe her. When she was a young girl, Nell, playing in Hill House, found a tea set amongst the toys. Mrs. Dudley would tell Nell that the tea set belonged to Jaclyn, one of the young girls who lived at the house with the Hills before the Crains owned it. Olivia found Nell in the kitchen, later, cleaning the tea set. But Olivia wasn't angry about that; she was angry about Nell writing her name on the walls in another room. Nell claimed not to be responsible, but she was told to clean it anyways. Theo would soon place her hand on the writing to determine that it certainly was not Nell who wrote it, and peeling back the wallpaper they would find more writing saying "COME HOME NELL".

Theo goes dancing after she finishes at work, and when she does she runs into the girl from the previous night. She decides not to speak to her. She keeps her number on her nightstand though. At Hill House, odd events kept occurring. Theo would hear people trying to get into rooms, but fail to open the doors. One day, while Luke played near the dumbwaiter, Mrs. Dudley yelled at him to play safely, indicating her fear of the contraption. One night, Theo found Luke hiding in the dumbwaiter, trying to take it for a ride. Theo humoured him, closing the door and pushing the button, sending him downstairs much to both of their surprise. What Luke found down there, shining his flashlight, was much to his surprise-- an entire room. He stayed in the dumbwaiter the entire time, and as he looked over to one side, he saw the undead creature lurch out from behind the barrels and crawl his way. Hugh and Olivia came to his aid, following the screaming down to the kitchen, and by then, the dumbwaiter was working again.

Shirley and her husband, Kevin, argued about the funeral business. Because Shirley has been too accommodating to their customers, they've been haemorrhaging money-- not enough to cripple them, but enough to be concerned. She reasoned that special cases deserved their help and empathy. When one of her clients arrived to drop off some jewellery for his mother, Shirley thought she saw a man sitting in the other room. He disappeared almost instantly. Kevin, returning, asked if she heard anything about Nell or Luke. She hadn't, really. Six years earlier, Steven and Shirley were responsible for Luke who, falling off the wagon again, needed to get back into rehab. With his insurance lapsed, it fell to Shirley to cough up $6,000 for his first month back in the clinic. The whole family was there to see him off, at least all of the siblings.

Steven and Hugh's talk about 'protecting your children' escalates when Steven admits that he read the police reports from the night they fled. There was blood all over the library carpet and bruises all over Olivia's arms from being held. Her ankle was twists and there was a contusion on her arm. She was unmedicated and untreated for her sickness. When Hugh left the house with the children, she killed herself and no one was there to protect her. In the attic games room, Steven found a dusty vanity table hiding under some sheets. With the intent to clean it up for his mother, he spoke to Mrs. Dudley about repainting it. She searched through the drawers discovering it likely belonged to Poppy Hill, the insane woman who was married to William. Mrs. Dudley used to tend to her in the house, though in her later years. As Steven painted the table, he painted over the mold growing on the bottom.

While Hugh, Olivia, Steven, Luke, and Shirley gathered around the flashlights in the center of the foyer, Theo stayed back and held Nell's hand next to the stairs while the storm continued around them. When Olivia looked back though, Theo wasn't holding anyone's hand; Nell seemed to disappear without any of them realizing, all within a few seconds. Hugh and Olivia let Steven watch the others in the foyer while they headed through the house looking for her. It's then that Steven told Luke he'd never let anything happen to any of them; that was his job as a big brother. In the funeral home, the kids reminisce about Nell and their extended family. A story about Nell inventing the word 'puffalope' gets them all thinking. Hugh has to let them know that the word actually came from Olivia, who claimed her letters would be safe in a puffalope heading to the North Pole. The letters, he assured them, were very formal in nature, but they were always about gifts for her siblings.

After dinner, Shirley confided in Theo about Kevin's chequebook. Since they had joint accounts it seemed odd to her that he would have his own names on a different chequing account. Grabbing some milk from the fridge, Shirley also remembered being allowed to take care of the five kittens from the shed, feeding them milk with a dropper. That night, Theo woke Shirley up because she thought she was banging on the wall and calling her name. She wasn't. They heard the dogs outside again, out in the distance. The girls, scared, both started hearing and seeing the banging, then loud enough to rattle the pictures on the walls., and they screamed until Hugh came down to calm them down. This memory turns out to be a dream. As she listens to her father, his mouth elongates in a horrible groan and she's roused from the nightmare by her phone.

Shirley wakes from her dream in the red room and finds Steven performing CPR on Luke. Theo, however, is still asleep, her back against the moldy wall. Theo sees herself telling Trish the story of the one time her mother hit her as a child, when she smashed a window in a greenhouse roof. Despite her mother's scolding, she smashed more windows after that. Trish asks about the gloves but Theo can't remember the reason for them. When she touches Trish, she can't feel anything. Trish tells her her own story though, about a man who dreamt that he boarded himself up in his walls to escape his children. When he though he escaped him, truly he never did. He scratched at the walls like a rat and when he inevitably emerge he was taller than he once was. As Trish slides down the bed, Theo is grabbed by several ghostly hands and held down. Only Nell can pull her free, and when she does Theo awakens. Theo finds her siblings fighting to save Luke's life but it seems as though it's too late.

Mrs. Dudley found Olivia off on her own after the vision when she was bringing paint supplies up to Steven (for the vanity table). Olivia asked Mrs. Dudley if she homeschooled her children (she did), and she agreed that it was a good idea. She worried that when she looked at her little ones right now she felt afraid. Perhaps it was just anxiety. Fortunately, Hugh kept her grounded; maybe the kids were safe. Mrs. Dudley disagreed; if she felt her kids were unsafe, then she needed to follow her gut because they were hers. The Crains hoped to be out by the end of August, but the mold issue was likely to delay them. Mrs. Dudley thought Olivia should be out sooner than that. The house was a strange house and her own child was not allowed to step foot on the property. Honestly, she didn't even want to work at the house again. She only did because a family was moving in and she would work in the daylight to keep an eye on them-- the twins were the same age as her child. Olivia told her she would be leaving on Monday for Janet's. Mrs. Dudley said she would pray for her and her family in this house.

Shirley has no choice but to throw out her model when she sifts through the pieces and finds a dense mold growing on several. As the doorbell rings again, she angrily heads back to the door. Since she left the candy bowl out, she finds it particularly enraging. Once again, she heads out to confront the people ringing the bell, but no one's there. Soon, she starts seeing things and hearing knocks and the doors and windows. This time she runs outside and Theo, heading over to apologize, finds her. Theo tries to explain herself. From what she remembers, and she was drunk, she didn't even think it was Kevin who she was kissing. She knows, though, that it wasn't his fault. The argument escalates from words to physical attacks before Shirley moves to force Theo out, but the fight comes to an end when the two experience banging on the doors and windows. They stop when Shirley receives a text.

Hugh later showed the odd blueprints to Mr. Dudley, asking him to search for the key to the red room one more time. He would need to ask Olivia about the blueprints, undoubtedly; Mr. Dudley suggested that maybe Olivia take time away from the house for a change of pace. In fact, Mr. Dudley recommended it based on his own past with the house. His mother, who worked in the kitchen for years, used to come home scattered. She would talk to herself. Towards the end she'd wander into the forest barefoot, talking low. She'd sleep out there sometimes. When she died, Clara got hired on working at Hill House. Clara never complained, but he believes that the house did something to her, especially with the nightmares. She worked through her first pregnancy; the baby was stillborn. One night, cleaning the master bedroom, Clara heard the crying of a baby. She ran home to tell him and bring him back to the house and, sure enough, he heard it too. They stopped coming to the house after dark after that. That worked. No more nightmares. No more coming home scattered.
