Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A month before Nell's death, Steven and Leigh attended a consultation for which of these?

Answer: Pregnancy

A month before the funeral, Steven and Leigh spoke to a fertility doctor about artificial insemination. During the visit, it seemed fairly clear that Steven's heart wasn't really in it. As he answered the doctor's questions and scheduled his upcoming tests, he saw a figure standing outside the foggy window.

The distracting figure-- one only he could see-- unnerved him enough that he needed to talk to Leigh about the whole situation. After Luke left the funeral with Shirley's card, the rest of the family, cleaning up the office, waits as Shirley contacts the credit card company.

She asks them to forward any activity to her phone via a text alert.
2. While the others assume he may be heading out for drugs, Theo worries that Luke left to do which of these things?

Answer: Commit suicide

While Shirley worries about who destroyed her house model, the rest of the family concerns themselves with Luke's whereabouts, especially when Theo notes that twins of deceased siblings tend to have a higher likelihood of suicide. Steven guesses that Luke went out to get drugs, so he heads out with his father to search the local drug spot, Methadone Mile.

Theo asks her father, before he departs, why they don't tell the others what they saw-- the spectre in the office. Hugh's insistence to help mirrors Steven's pleading to help in Hill House.

After the body was found int he basement, Hugh planned to use chemicals and rat poison to treat the walls while Olivia was expected to spend some time away from the house with Janet. The way Steven could help, he said, was to watch the others in that time.
3. For how many years were Hugh and Olivia married before that night at Hill House?

Answer: Fifteen

Steven headed upstairs through tons of workers to find his mother standing in the twins' room talking, as if to herself, about the safety of those in her care. When Steven snapped her out of her trance, it seemed that she didn't know where the kids were. Steven and Hugh argue as they drive around looking for Luke.

It's the perfect opportunity for Hugh to ask Steven about his and Leigh's relationship considering the split. It takes quite a bit of time talking about Olivia before Steven is at all able to open up a bit. Hugh's story about their twenty year relationship (fifteen of which were in marriage) wasn't all roses, but there was love there, even when they were fighting.
4. During what day do the events of this episode take place?

Answer: Halloween

At the funeral home, Kevin takes the kids out trick-or-treating. He asks if they can chat when he gets back; she says he can't very well do that from his hotel room. Instead, she stays home and starts to put together the pieces of her broken model. Despite shutting out the porch lights, she hears the doorbell several times and, angrily, she heads out to hand out candy but there's no one there. In the car, Hugh admits he wouldn't know what he would do if he lost anyone else.

It's why he had to hop into the car with Steven.

When Steven has kids, he says, things will change for him. Steven claims he won't have kids.
5. Who attempted to refurbish an old vanity table for Olivia?

Answer: Steven

Steven and Hugh's talk about 'protecting your children' escalates when Steven admits that he read the police reports from the night they fled. There was blood all over the library carpet and bruises all over Olivia's arms from being held. Her ankle was twists and there was a contusion on her arm.

She was unmedicated and untreated for her sickness. When Hugh left the house with the children, she killed herself and no one was there to protect her. In the attic games room, Steven found a dusty vanity table hiding under some sheets. With the intent to clean it up for his mother, he spoke to Mrs. Dudley about repainting it.

She searched through the drawers discovering it likely belonged to Poppy Hill, the insane woman who was married to William. Mrs. Dudley used to tend to her in the house, though in her later years.

As Steven painted the table, he painted over the mold growing on the bottom.
6. Shirley and Theo both experience what frightening phenomenon at the funeral home?

Answer: Knocking at the windows and doors

Shirley has no choice but to throw out her model when she sifts through the pieces and finds a dense mold growing on several. As the doorbell rings again, she angrily heads back to the door. Since she left the candy bowl out, she finds it particularly enraging. Once again, she heads out to confront the people ringing the bell, but no one's there. Soon, she starts seeing things and hearing knocks and the doors and windows.

This time she runs outside and Theo, heading over to apologize, finds her. Theo tries to explain herself. From what she remembers, and she was drunk, she didn't even think it was Kevin who she was kissing.

She knows, though, that it wasn't his fault. The argument escalates from words to physical attacks before Shirley moves to force Theo out, but the fight comes to an end when the two experience banging on the doors and windows.

They stop when Shirley receives a text.
7. What does Luke end up using Shirley's credit card to buy?

Answer: Gas

Shirley and Theo call Steven immediately. Luke used the card for gas, filling up Theo's vehicle on the way through Amherst. It's clear to all of them that he's on his way to Hill House. Steven and Hugh say they'll head out to get him, but they urge the girls to stay back at the funeral home.

Theo suggests Shirley tell them what they just experienced, but she hangs up instead, promising to text the gas station address. Shirley refuses to admit that the banging wasn't just a prank. On the drive, Steven tells Hugh that he believes the Crain Family has a sickness, and that's why he doesn't feel comfortable having children. Nell was delusional; Luke was an addict; Shirley was a control freak; Theo was a clenched fist.

The whole family has something wrong with their brains.

It's why he got a vasectomy right out of college. He never told Leigh.
8. When Olivia received the vanity table, what did she do?

Answer: Broke its mirror

Steven showed his mother the vanity mirror after he tidied it up and it certainly did cheer her up. She admitted she loved it but when she sat down in front of it, she saw something in its reflection. It concerned her enough that she put her fist into the mirror. Steven and Hugh arrive in Amherst to discover that Luke filled up the vehicle, but he also purchased five cans of gas. Once they fill up, Hugh takes the wheel next; he speeds as they head out because he knows Luke is planning to burn Hill House to the ground, and if he does that, the house will do its best to fight back.

There's a lot Steven doesn't know, he says.
9. What indicated to Hugh that Steven had been seeing ghosts since their time in Hill House?

Answer: His book

Hugh tells Steven that for twenty years, he held the door shut on Hill House because the Crain Family is an unfinished meal to whatever it is and what's inside it. The fact that Luke is returning to it is horribly concerning. It's the most dangerous place for all of them, especially Steven because Hugh read his book. Hugh knows that Steven saw ghosts-- chapter 19, the story about the vanity.

In the chapter, he noted that he mentioned a man was repairing the clock in the foyer. Hugh never had a specialist; that man was never there. Steven also made note of the treehouse Luke used to play in; they never had a treehouse. Hugh says they only planned to flip the house for eight weeks and he never would have had time to build a treehouse. Whatever Steven has been seeing makes him susceptible to the house's abilities.

It's why he told Theo and Shirley to stay at the funeral home. Of course, they didn't.
10. When Theo touched Nell's corpse, what did she feel?

Answer: Nothing

Shirley and Theo drive out to Hill House themselves, quietly sorting through their issues while worrying about Luke. Theo tries to lay out what she's been experiencing, claiming that something was in the office when the forever house was knocked onto the floor. As for Kevin, Theo was really drunk. She couldn't see Kevin in the dark. But that's not it-- she touched Nell's body the night before the funeral and saw something. As the argument escalates, the sisters are horribly frightened by Nell's apparition appearing between them and it forces Shirley off the road. There, in the grass, Theo admits she touched Nell and felt nothing, and that nothing spread to her until she was numb. There, in the basement, when the lights went out, she wondered if that was death-- nothingness and loneliness. She reached out for anything she could feel and that's when she reached Kevin. She never kissed him, but when the lights came on, she felt something-- grief and shame as Shirley opened the door-- at at least it WAS something.

Luke arrives at Hill House and unloads his cargo from the trunk of Theo's Jeep, all five gas cans. He sees the lights in the house glow red as he enters and starts dousing the foyer in fuel. He counts to seven before flicking open his lighter and sparking the gas, but nothing happens. Instead, he sees his mother standing on the stairs beckoning for him to join her as something grabs him from behind.
