Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who, according to the family, had been trying to get everyone together for years?

Answer: Nell

As Shirley tends to Nell's body in the coffin at the funeral home, Theo comments that their sister looks dead and not like she's sleeping, like dead bodies in the movies. Theo wonders out loud how bad she looked when she arrived. A storm rages outside as she takes another drink.

It's the night before the funeral. The girls talk about Luke's problems, especially as he flies across the country with Steven to attend. Their father is also en route. The real irony, Shirley says, is that Nell had been trying to get everyone together for years.

She didn't need to try so hard. Luke sees the body across the room and decides it's too hard to cope, so the family takes their time and meets him in the other room.
2. Which of the Crain siblings is the one to see Olivia's ghost standing by Nell's coffin?

Answer: Steven

It takes a few minutes for Luke to compose himself. The siblings help him reenter the room with the coffin and he approaches the body. Steven turns out to be the one who struggles the most. He nearly breaks down. As the others leave, Steven turns around to see the apparition of Nell, the bent-neck lady, standing by the coffin. Every time he turns to look, she seems to get closer.
Steven has to explain the situation to the rest of the family as they piece things together. Nell hanged herself from her neck; it was broken. Why she went back to Hill House in the first place is a mystery. They think about what Mrs. Dudley might have said to their father. Maybe it would have been a clue.
That's when the doorbell rings. Shirley's husband, Kevin, gets it. It turns out to be their father, arriving a bit late.
3. During the night of a terrible storm in Hill House, which of these was destroyed?

Answer: A chandelier

When Hugh arrives, he apologizes for his lateness. It's weird, he says, because it's been so long since they've all been in the same room. He says something to Shirley and Theo, but it seems like he's talking to someone else under his breath as well.

He goes in to see the body and the kids follow, none of them seeing her ghost standing at the back of the room. Hugh heads to the bathroom, heading down the hall but finding himself emerging in a memory of the halls of Hill House during the night of a bad storm. During this storm, he recalls, the chandelier in the foyer fell from the ceiling.

It woke the family. Olivia, who claimed she was absentmindedly walking the halls, was the first to arrive after Hugh.
4. During the storm at Hill House, Olivia asked Shirley and Theo to head to the kitchen to make which of these?

Answer: Cocoa

Hugh and Steven moved the chandelier away from the center of the foyer as the storm started to worsen. As hail started to fall, a window shattered upstairs in Shirley's room. Hugh asked the family to stay together in the foyer while he and Steven checked the window.

They didn't though-- Olivia asked Shirley and Theo to take their brother to the kitchen to make some cocoa. She stayed in the foyer with Nell counting the seconds between lightning and thunder until the power went out. While the family scrambled to get their supplies, Nell saw the bent-neck lady again, this time while completely awake.
5. When would Nell have used a 'puffalope', according to the stories?

Answer: When writing a letter

While Hugh, Olivia, Steven, Luke, and Shirley gathered around the flashlights in the center of the foyer, Theo stayed back and held Nell's hand next to the stairs while the storm continued around them. When Olivia looked back though, Theo wasn't holding anyone's hand; Nell seemed to disappear without any of them realizing, all within a few seconds. Hugh and Olivia let Steven watch the others in the foyer while they headed through the house looking for her.

It's then that Steven told Luke he'd never let anything happen to any of them; that was his job as a big brother. In the funeral home, the kids reminisce about Nell and their extended family.

A story about Nell inventing the word 'puffalope' gets them all thinking. Hugh has to let them know that the word actually came from Olivia, who claimed her letters would be safe in a puffalope heading to the North Pole.

The letters, he assured them, were very formal in nature, but they were always about gifts for her siblings.
6. How often did Nell send updates to her father?

Answer: Once a month

Shirley, listening to her dad's story about Nell's letters, struggles with knowing that two members of their family had so much pain that they needed to kill themselves. Shirley believes that Nell's choice was selfish, but more concerningly, she's sad that Nell couldn't talk to her. In one story, the kids were camping in a tent. Steve pretended to be a bear, banging on the tent, but Nell believed that they were safe in the tent. Steve remembers this, but he's more concerned with what Hugh said earlier about monthly letters Nell used to send to him. Hugh, having a history of not divulging the truth when a family member is in trouble, starts an attempt to unravel it from the beginning.
7. Who, besides Theo, took Steven's royalty cheques?

Answer: Kevin

Steven asks about the call from Mrs. Dudley who, on the night of Nell's death, saw the car out front, checked the building, and found her hanging next to the spiral staircase in the library. More interestingly, he asks his father if Nell wrote to him about the book signing she crashed a month earlier (she didn't mention it). Shirley, surprised by this, notes that Nell tried calling her the day before she died (she called Steven too) asking to make sure Luke was okay.

They all reason that she was not well, likely off her meds (she was) under a new therapist.

The only one to talk to Nell was Hugh, the night before, when she said the bent-neck lady was back. Steven goes off on his father while Hugh mutters, again, to someone who doesn't seem to be there. Shirley tries to stand up for her father, but it leads to an argument about Steven's books.

It spills over to Theo, who's been spending the night drinking. She admits to Shirley that she took Steven's royalty money to start her career; she lied for years.
8. What does Shirley find placed in Nell's coffin?

Answer: Buttons

Shirley, fed up with Steven and Theo, tells her brother to head back to California immediately after the funeral and Theo to move out soon after because she took Steven's blood money. Her husband, Kevin, ends up being the one to step in this time, letting her know that the chequebook she found in the office the other day was for a separate account he used to squirrel away their own royalty cheques.

He accepted Steven's offer on their behalf to protect their business. Shirley, humiliated, asks everyone to leave.

Theo and Kevin go for more vodka as Hugh, Steven, and Luke consider heading back to the hotel, but they're stopped when Shirley checks the casket to find buttons placed atop Nell's eyes. That's when the power goes out. Shirley has a backup generator, but not much seems to work. Hugh is left alone with the body but when he turns around he sees Nell's ghost, the bent-neck lady, down an adjacent hall and chooses to follow it.
9. On the night of the storm, the kids thought they saw which of these head down the hall to the kitchen?

Answer: A wolf-like creature

On the night of the storm in Hill House, Hugh and Olivia searched for Nell together. After Hugh's flashlight went out, Olivia searched alone, wandering in the darkness as she navigated the upper floor. It was then that she encountered several of the spirits of the house. Hugh would return to the hallways to find Olivia's flashlight on the ground; she somehow seemed to make her way across the house, disappearing down dead end corridors. Hugh had a vision of the house's windows bursting inwards, but when he looked again, they were intact.

He would find Olivia there, sitting in the hallway, before the kids started screaming downstairs, claiming there was a wolf-like creature that ran down the hall to the kitchen. Hugh went to find her, but that's when Nell reappeared from the shadows.
10. While Steven and Hugh argue in the visitation room, what happens?

Answer: Nell's coffin falls over

Hugh finds Luke lighting candles in the visitation room, having wandered off when the lights went out. When Luke asks who his father thinks placed the buttons on Nell's eyes, Hugh suggests it was none of them, and he surely knows it. They agree that the bent-neck lady was real the whole time, but Nell didn't do it to herself. As for Olivia, it's a bit more complicated. As the others return to the room, Luke asks for more answers from his father. They demand the truth. So Hugh tries to explain-- Nell didn't kill herself, the house did it. Olivia, Nell, and Luke could all see what Hill House truly was, but Steven never believed. Their argument escalates until Nell's coffin falls over...and the lights immediately come back on.
The family rights the coffin again and Shirley goes to grab makeup to fix Nell's face. Downstairs, Shirley walks in on Kevin and Theo fooling around in the storage room and runs the other direction. Hugh kisses his daughter's forehead before apologizing to the boys.
On the night of the storm in Hill House, as the lights came back on, Nell explained that she was right in the lobby the whole time, screaming for them to hear her. None of them even looked at her. When the Crains depart from the visitation room, none of them see that Nell's spirit was with them in the room the entire time.
