Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Days before Nell's death, Luke spent how many days sober?

Answer: Ninety

Back when he was a child in Hill House, Luke was disappointed. No one believed that his best friend was visible and real, but he could certainly see Abigail.
In the present day, Luke struggles with drugs and attends therapy. Whether or not it helps is questionable; others talk about their addictions and the horrible things they've seen as a result of their traumas. Ninety days before Nell's death, he attended a support group at which he struggled to open up. Two days before her death Luke admitted that he was ninety days clean of drugs, accepting this three-month chip.
2. When he was a young child, Luke took ownership of what item found in the attic of Hill House?

Answer: A bowler hat

Luke, talking to his dad in Hill House about his imaginary friend, was reassured that everything was alright. Even if he felt that the house was a bad house, there was no real harm in having someone to talk to who wasn't real. During this talk, Olivia brought some items down from the attic, proposing they had enough clutter to have a big yard sale. Amongst these items were a box of buttons she gave to Nell and a big bowler hat that Luke asked for.

When he put it on, Nell assured their parents that he liked it.

When asked how she knew, she explained "it's a twin thing". While the kids ran off, Olivia donned a shawl and had some severe deja vu, sensing the way the room library used to be as though she'd been there.
3. Luke awakens on the night of Nell's death to find her standing at the foot of his bed. What word does she whisper to him?

Answer: Go

In the present day, Luke talks about the problems he's had in his years with his friend, Joey, who's been going through the motions of breaking addiction alongside him. His goal is to make amends with people in his past and, unfortunately, that means most of his family.

As he goes down the list, he struggles to come to the idea of where to start. It's clear that Joey is struggling though. She's nine months in on her sobriety and it's not easy. The owner of the half-way house tells Luke that his brother called and she encourages him to reach out; it's clear that some members of his family still believe in him. Nell certainly did. Luke abruptly awakens at 12:03 reaching for his neck.

When he sits up he sees Nell in his room before him and she whispers one word: "Go."
4. Luke's friend, Joey, is a recovering addict. She chooses to leave treatment voluntarily.

Answer: True

Luke and Nell, playing in Hill House one day, used the communication pipes to play with Nell dropping buttons down the bedroom pipe and Luke catching them in the kitchen below. She dropped three, but only two appeared out the other end. When Luke went upstairs alone to check, he saw a figure reflected in the brass of the tube, turning to him and asking for Clara. In the half-way house, Luke gets up at 7am for breakfast and finds a note under his pillow. Joey chose to leave treatment in the middle of the night, leaving a note for Luke under his pillow.

It's clear that others blame Luke since the recovery process might be too unstable for addicts to lean on other addicts. He returns to his room to read the note again. His therapist finds it on the desk after he leaves through the window.

It says 'Don't Follow Me!'.
5. Luke's terrifying encounter in Hill House involved which of these ghostly figures?

Answer: A tall man

From a payphone, Luke leaves Nell a message suggesting that he'll be back at the half-way house in the evening, after he finishes searching for a friend. She can contact him there to let him know that she's okay. Before he goes looking for Joey, he takes a seat and looks around, and it's then that he sees a man in a jacket in the distance, facing away, and he's wearing a black bowler hat. In the middle of the night, young Luke was woken from his sleep by the sound of a barking dog.

He looked up to find Nell sleeping, and, unable to get back to sleep, he put on his glasses and ventured out into the house.

It was then, out in the hall that he saw a tall man, floating above the floor, wandering outside. He crawled under his bed to hide as the man entered his room, but he was heard breathing in his hiding spot. That was when the ghostly man looked under the bed wearing his bowler hat.
6. Instead of going back to the half-way house where Joey no longer has a place, Luke suggests they take up shelter where?

Answer: At a motel

By the time Luke breaks free of his memory of the tall man in his bedroom, he finds he's still sitting on the bench at the park but night has fallen. He's fortunate in that Joey shows up there, visiting one of her usual spots. He calls back to the half-way house to ask that Joey's bed be saved but there's no way it can be done; she'll have to come off her high at another shelter. Both of them are out of sorts. Joey apologizes but can't fight the feeling; Luke feels stiff after his poor night's sleep.

He vows he'll find money to get them a motel room and then, after that, they'll find a new place. While they discuss money, Luke sees the figure of the man with the bowler hat, still facing away from him.
7. From whom does Luke discover that Steven and Leigh are no longer together?

Answer: Leigh

Luke opens up to Joey about 'the twin thing', suggesting that Nell urged him to go, and that's why he went out looking for her. There are moments, he says, that Joey reminds him of Nell because they both believe in him. They don't go to a motel. Instead, they end up at Steve's place. Leigh answers the door and, unfortunately, needs to inform her brother-in-law that she and Steve have separated.

He can't stay there, and when he asks for money, it gets even more complicated. He asks for Steven's address, but she won't give up the new address.

Not yet anyways.
8. Over dinner, Steven once likened which of these activities to insanity?

Answer: Addiction treatment

Looking inside the house, Luke has a vision of Joey sitting at the table with him, Steve, and Leigh. Joey encouraged Luke to talk about his own writing, but it killed the conversation. Steven instead turned to the talk of treatment and Joey held her own, holding true to her thoughts of recurring treatment. Steven likened it to insanity, repeating treatment over and over; Joey suggested the repetition was the reality and it spared her from the actual insanity. While cleaning the dishes, Luke and Steven discussed Luke's interest in Joey. Steven complimented what he saw in her, but Luke wouldn't hear the idea that she might have been fooling him.

He commented that his recovery-- the shakes, the cold, the horrible feelings-- was only possible because of her. Steve simply told him to be careful. Luke left there, thirty days clean, and didn't see Steven after that.
9. Luke eventually gets money from Steven, but it's stolen by a gang out in the streets.

Answer: False

Luke, getting colder throughout the night, breaks into Steven's apartment and steals his camera and iPad. Unfortunately, he runs into his brother on the way out. Steven gives him the camera and $200, but asks him to leave the iPad. They head onward to a hotel, but on the way, Joey needs to use the washroom. Luke, feverish and aching, waits outside an alley for her to finish, but before she goes she leans in, thanks him, and gives him a kiss.

He doesn't realize that she's stolen the money. He calls for her, but she's run a different direction.

He searches for her, but there's more going on; the man with the bowler hat seems to be getting closer. As Luke heads to a nearby underpass to get warm by a flaming barrel, he sees the man again.

As the sun rose, he was mugged by a gang, beaten, and left under a bridge.
10. Luke has a habit of counting to seven. He originally taught Nell to do this using what items?

Answer: Buttons

Still cold, but now without his jacket and shoes, Luke continues to see the man with the bowler hat, always managing to find his way behind him. He spends all day outside before he calls the half-way house. His therapist is sympathetic as he begs for a bed, if only to stop feeling so cold and achy, and she suggests that they will come and get him-- herself and Steven, who arrived to speak to him.
While he waits for them, he remembers waking up in the night, as a boy, and finding Nell awake and crying in her bed. Nell cried that she saw her again-- the bent-neck lady. Their parents never believed her when she said she was real. That night, Luke taught her to set up seven buttons and count them out loud, one for each member of the family. It keeps him safe, so it will keep her safe.
In the streets, Luke counts as he walks, but the man in the bowler hat catches up to him. As he turns around, the man reveals himself to be his mother, Olivia, and she asks him to come home.
That's when Steven finds him. Steven believes him, but there's bad news. Nell is dead; she committed suicide. Luke tells him this is untrue; he knows it wasn't suicide. He can sense it.
