1. The first season of "The Traitors (AU)" had twenty-four contestants. How many played the game this time around?

This time, twenty new contestants (most civilians, but some entertainers) were brought in to the ol' Southern Highlands hotel for the chance to win up to $250,000 AUD in silver bars. Upon arriving, they were brought almost immediately into the banishment room and the round table to meet Rodger and, with that, they kicked the game off, putting on blindfolds and waiting for Rodger's yea or nay. This season, Rodger chose three Traitors: Blake, Ash, and Sam. With a touch of the shoulder, the game was afoot. The Traitors would learn of each others' identities on Night 1 after an initial chat at which point they would make their first murder move.

All twenty-four contestants were brought into the game on Day 1, checking in at a massive hotel in the Southern Highlands of Australia. After cocktails in the salon, all were brought, by host Rodger Corser, into the Banishment Room where they were sat at the Round Table and told that their only goal would be to make it to the end to collect a treasure of solid silver. As Rodger informed, every night, they would gather in the Banishment Room to attempt to get rid of one Traitor while, at the same time, the Traitors would gather in the Traitor's Tower to murder one of the Faithfuls. With that, he instructed them all to put on their masks and he would be selecting the Traitors. He chose Nigel, Angus, Marielle, and Claire, all of whom met together in the Traitor's Tower that evening. None of them would make it to the end of the game.

As soon as the twenty-two contestants arrived at the castle to begin a game of deceit for up to £120,000, they were informed by host Claudia Winkleman that the game would begin quickly with the simple question of 'who's least likely to win?'. Having all contestants stand in a line with the most likely at one end and the least likely at the other, Claudia swiftly took Amos and Kieran at their words, asking them to leave immediately. They were subsequently returned to the game on Day 5. What followed, after introducing the remaining contestants to their new home, was the first Round Table of the series where all participants were sat down and blindfolded and where Claudia selected the game's three Traitors. That evening, they would convene in the Traitor Tower and commit their first murder.

At the start of the show, host Alan Cumming brings the twenty contestants into his Scottish estate and seats them at the Round Table. After the players are blindfolded, he taps three of them on the shoulders to indicate that they will be the Traitors; all of the rest will be the Faithful, and it will be their aim to catch out the problematic few. By the end of the first day, Cirie, Christian, and Cody meet in the Traitor Turret and discover each others' identities. And every night going forward, they select one person to eliminate to cover their trail, effectively 'murdering' them.

In one of the earliest orders of business, the contestants headed to the round table and Karine selected three players to become Traitors, allowing the discussions to proceed naturally from there. Melissa B., Kuzie, and Mike wouldn't know who else was a Traitor until after the first mission when they convened in the Traitors' Conclave. There they would murder someone different every night...at least until the second half of the game.

After attempting to sway the other contestants to follow her suggestions which were, in turn, given to her by spirits from the other side, Chloe came into the Banishment Ceremony on Day 3 with an odd insistence that she didn't want to give up her thoughts quite yet. When pressed, however, she voted against the group to eliminate Teresa, stating that she believed she received word of four Traitors in the game, listing them off. She would leave the room before MK revealed his alignment, removing herself from the game completely when she didn't show for breakfast. Interestingly, she was right about two of the Traitors' identities (Angus and Marielle), and her claim would get many of the Faithful thinking hard about their selections.

On Night 3, Claudia informed the Traitors that they would not be murdering anyone on that evening. Instead, they would need to choose three players to put 'on trial'. This means that one of those 'on trial' players would need to be murdered on Night 4 and the other players would be notified of such at breakfast (and it devolved into a shouting match pretty quickly!). The Traitors elected to nominate Alex, Ivan, and John to be put under the microscope, and that evening, the group banished Ivan despite, believing that he could have put himself up on trial. The Traitors murdered John the following night.

After three hard-fought days, Melissa B. couldn't shake the attention she'd taken on from the very first time around the round table. It meant that on Day 3, when the seventeen remaining players sat down for their second banishment, she was in the crosshairs of everyone-- even her fellow Traitors. The Faithfuls would subsequently go on a dry spell, unable to remove another Traitor from the game until Day 8. That night, Kuzie and Mike would receive the option to recruit a new Traitor or continue their Murders. They chose the latter.

Sam started planting the seeds for Ash (with Annabel) on Day 3, aiming for a brash move to frame himself as a Traitor Hunter and throw the suspicion off himself. With this in mind, the preemptive plan was to ingratiate himself with the Faithfuls, establishing himself as the 'Sheriff', capable of taking down anyone with his educated "guessing". He helped push Gyton on Day 2, but by Day 3, he was able to get enough takers to push Ash out in the most scattered Banishment of the season. Ash was sent home in a vote of 8-2-2-1-1-1, securing the easy Traitor out and leaving Blake and Sam to vie for the endgame.

Though seeds were planted in the group regarding Alyssa's potential status as a Traitor when Tom called her out on Day 4, Day 6 proved to be her reckoning when not only did a group of Faithfuls target her for banishment, but she received votes from her fellow Traitors. After Wilfred made a concerted effort to deflect unwanted attention from himself, it sealed her fate. She was banished and forced to reveal herself as the first Traitor to be removed from the game. It left Wilfred and Amanda still fighting for the prize.

After Bam is murdered by the Traitors solely to sow confusion, everyone finds that the approach works. Kate and Brandi start a campaign against Michael on Day 3 and the pair decide to lay out their suspicions in a note. Said note comes back in a big way later when the group votes out Brandi, revealing her as a Faithful. Upon leaving this Round Table, Kate accidentally drops the paper and it's found by Stephenie, raising suspicions from everyone the note comes into contact with. She ends up telling Cirie first, not knowing that Cirie is a Traitor, and it becomes one of the main topics going into Day 4.

Day 4 was the first opportunity at which players could vie for the Shield, a game mechanic that would protect its possessor from Murder if it was in their hands. To get it, players had the chance to visit the armoury resulting from strong showings in challenges, and even then, several players would get the opportunity to search the boxes there for the prize. Kuzie got the first Shield on Day 4, Mickey on Day 5, and Kevin on Day 6, though Kevin was Banished on Night 6, rendering it useless). The Shield was also available on Day 7, but no one went for it.

On Night 5, Karine informed Kuzie and Mike that there would be no Murder or Recruitment. Instead, they would need to select three players to place on Death Row, making them and only them eligible for Murder after the next round table. They elected to place only Faithfuls into the running for this, choosing Kevin, Mary, and Melissa A. Over the next two days, all three would be eliminated from the game by varying means, one with a Shield in-hand.

While the players had a few opportunities the previous season to claim a Shield of Protection (often in plain sight), this season introduced the hidden Armory, putting the device into effect from the very first Silver Mission. For most of the first seven Silver Missions, the winning team could head into the Armory and search amongst the boxes for one containing the Shield, and this would protect them from Murder for one night. They would not be obligated to announce if they have the Shield, so in theory, the Traitors could attempt to get rid of them and fail. As for recipients, Simone had it twice (in a row), Liam had it twice (also in a row), Blake and Sam had it once each, and finally Keith was banished with it in-hand.

After narrowly missing elimination on Day 4's Banishment due to Chloe's call-out, Angus took in the majority of votes on Day 7, confirming suspicions that he was in fact on the Traitors' side. He would end up receiving votes from fellow Traitors Marielle and Nigel, blindsiding him to force him out the door. That night, no one would be murdered; the Traitors would receive a letter asking them to place three players up to complete a game for a massive gamble, potentially tripling the prize pot. They chose Lewis, Mark, and Nigel, who succeeded in a roulette game. It wasn't enough to keep heat off Claire, however, and she was sent home as the second Traitor in a row to leave the game.

After a wet and wild challenge in the grounds' fishing huts, the players were invited to a glamorous dinner party in the castle and promised that there would be no Round Table that evening. Over pudding, Claudia asked all of the contestants to stand and for one to volunteer themselves; Amanda chose to start the proceedings. Beginning with Amanda, the selected player needed to choose who they trusted the most in the game before sitting down, and each successive person would need to make the same choice with the remaining players. When this got to the end, Maddy was the last player standing and she was given the opportunity to take the £3,000 earned from the last challenge and leave with it, self-banishing. She elected to remain in the game, leaving the money to the prize pot.

On Day 6, after Ryan's murder (and Kyle's demise), the contestants are informed over breakfast that Amanda has been forced to leave the game due to unforeseen circumstances. To add insult to injury, they're also told that she was eliminated as a Faithful, marking just one more on the mounting casualty list. It was revealed after the completion of the show that Amanda was removed due to a positive COVID diagnosis.

On Day 6, all of the remaining contestants were brought together before the mission to be informed, by Karine, that there was an issue that occurred the previous night. Citing the integrity of the game to be of the utmost importance, she let the others know that Dom, who was playing as a Faithful, had broken one of the undisclosed rules of the competition. As such, he was removed from the game, leaving only eleven to compete.

With only two Traitors remaining in the game following Claire's Banishment, it wasn't long before the remaining Traitors (Marielle and Nigel) had the opportunity to recruit someone new to their ranks. After Matt's Banishment, they attended their nightly meeting in the Traitor's Tower and received a note instructing them to send an invitation to a Faithful of their choice. If the chosen Faithful did not accept, they would be able to continue with the game as-is, but if they opted to accept the invite, they would head directly to the Tower and meet their new teammates. The invite was sent to Alex and, despite concerns that she would not, she accepted the invite. No one was murdered on this occasion.

Leading into Day 6, the Traitors were told that, for the first time, they would not be murdering a Faithful in the night. Instead, they had to choose three people from the remaining players to put 'on trial', marking them for potential murder on Day 7 and leaving all other players safe (save for possible banishment at that night's Round Table). The Traitors elected to nominate Rachel, Kate, and Anjelica, all of whom were informed of the summons at breakfast. They would, however, have a possible chance at safety via the Armory Pass.

Starting immediately after Ash's Banishment on Day 4, Sam and Blake received new instructions in the Traitor Tower which allowed them to choose between two options; they could either Murder a Faithful, as they'd been doing thus far, or they could add a Faithful to their ranks as a Traitor, recruiting them with an invitation (which could be declined, in theory). The invitation wasn't extended until Day 8 when, during a pivotal moment (of argument), Rodger informed the Traitors that they would have only one final opportunity to recruit. They elected to offer the invitation to Camille to avoid retaining suspicion. She accepted the offer.

Immediately after the elimination of Marielle, the third Traitor removed by Banishment, the remaining Traitors were told that they would not be committing their next Murder quite yet. Instead, they would have to put three of the remaining players up on 'Death Row', informing them via letter at breakfast that one of the three of them would definitively be Murdered on the next occasion. The Traitors elected Lewis, Kate, and Paul to sit with this risk. Ultimately, none of the three of them were Banished on this occasion-- Nigel was, outing the final original Traitor-- and Paul was sent home the morning after.

Starting on Day 5, missions were presented to the contestants which included possibilities to access the castle's hidden armory. Inside, any visitors would have a chance of obtaining a shield, opening a chest at random with the hope of being immune to murder for a night. For five consecutive missions this was done with Tom, Amanda, Fay, Maddy, and Meryl receiving the shield in that order. Tom was eliminated with his in-hand, Amanda was a Traitor, and the other three managed to prolong their stays as a result. After Day 9, the armory visits came to an end.

On the end of Day 6 the Traitors had their first casualty when the greater group finally caught onto Cody's suspicious actions. So far gone was the possibility of salvaging his reputation that even his fellow Traitors, Cirie and Christian, needed to vote for him to avoid suspicion being cast on them as well. Tearfully, after receiving the majority of votes at the Round Table, he departed from the game and left ten competitors-- half of what the playing field started with.

After Kuzie's elimination, Mike, the sole remaining Traitor, was mandated not to Murder another player. Instead, Mike needed to Blackmail another player, meaning he had to give the ultimatum to join him as a new Traitor or be Murdered. Mike elected to bring Mickey into the fold as the only non-original Traitor of the game, forcing him to swap allegiances in the penultimate round of the game. It didn't go well for Mickey; even Mike turned on him at the proceeding round table, eliminating him with the others, blaming Mickey's lack of solid plan.

Against all odds, the Traitors managed to maneuver themselves to what would seem to be an ideal situation, obtaining the majority in the late stages of the game and systematically removing the remaining Faithfuls with a series of Banishments where they simply couldn't fight back. The final days of the competition resulted in unanimous votes wherein Sam, Blake, and Camille removed Gloria, Liam, and Sarah-- all of whom pointed the finger at Sam in their final moments, too little too late.

Out of twenty-four initial contestants, four of these Traitors were chosen from the outset (Nigel, Marielle, Claire, and Angus) while two were recruited as their numbers winnowed down. Alex was recruited by Nigel and Marielle, accepting the first such invitation of the game; Kate received the second from Alex, alone, once Nigel, the last original Traitor, was eliminated from the game in a later banishment. Both Alex and Kate would reach the grand finals.

Starting on Day 6, the contestants were informed that missions would also allow players to compete for a chance at visiting the castle's armory, a room where they would have a one-in-three or one-in-four shot at a Life Shield, protecting its possessor from being murdered in the night. Interestingly, all three this season were won by Arie, who was not targeted on Days 6 and 7 and, following that, became a Traitor.

With three Traitors standing at the end of the game, there could be a few possible outcomes: -If all three Traitors elected to share the prize, they would, splitting the $208,000 prize evenly three ways. -If one or two of the Traitors elected to steal the prize, they would, claiming it alone or splitting it between the two of them (while the sharer walked away with nothing). -If all three Traitors elected to steal the prize, no one would take any of the silver home. When it came down to it, all three Traitors elected to steal, indicating that they'd played a game wherein, while they avoided Banishment, they could not maneuver their own internal politics to satisfy the win condition. Greed and malice allowed all the earned money to slip through the finalists' fingers, meaning not a single contestant won this season.
