Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Old ETHAN PEL is a largish chap With trunk and a rather big rump His claim to fame in the animal world? The poor lad cannot jump!

Answer: Elephant

The elephant is native to Africa and parts of Asia. While it is unable to jump it does boast a very useful trunk which can be used for feeding, siphoning and spraying water. It is the largest terrestrial animal and is second only to the giraffe in height.
2. Now CECIL ROOD is misunderstood A reptile who isn't much fun One annoying shortfall in his beady eyes He cannot poke out his tongue

Answer: Crocodile

The crocodile is hardly the most popular of all reptiles and is capable of killing a human. While its strong jaw and teeth are ruthlessly effective - the crocodile has limited movement of its tongue because of the way it is attached.
3. Sweet BETTY FURL is a delicate miss And flowers are her treat Her one regret on the social scene She's forced to taste with her feet

Answer: Butterfly

Many butterflies actually taste with their feet. The presence of smell receptors in the feet of the insect make it easier to identify food sources.
4. CHRIS TO is one to try and hide But he does have a unique claim The only bird to boast two toes In the animal Hall of Fame

Answer: Ostrich

While there are many claims that ostriches bury their heads in the sand - they do actually rest with heads stretched out on the ground. They are the only living birds with just two toes on each foot.
5. PAUL SPYT is a mixed up lad indeed With a bill and poison spurs The committee accused of creating him Is something with which he concurs

Answer: Platypus

The Australian platypus is often called the duck billed platypus. The male has poison spurs on its back legs for defence. When news filtered back to England of this strange creature - many in the Old Country felt it was a colonial joke and the animal had been "manufactured" from other animal parts. One comment often made of this little animal is that is looks as though it has been designed by a committee.
6. THEA CHE is quite svelte and very fleet But cannot retract her claws The fastest animal on the land Chirps and growls as she has no roars

Answer: Cheetah

The cheetah is the fastest land animal having been clocked at over 114 kilometers (71 miles) per hour.
These cats cannot retract their claws and do not roar. Rather they growl or make a strange chirping noise that can be heard over a kilometer away.
7. SOPHIA TUMPOP is a funny girl She walks along beds of rivers The water is also her labour ward It is here that she delivers

Answer: Hippopotamus

The hippopotamus prefers walking along water beds to swimming. The female usually delivers her calf underwater and will nurse it there as well.
8. EDNA CHI is a prickly creature She has spikes and four short little legs A most unusual character A mammal who lays eggs

Answer: Echidna

The echidna or spiny anteater is highly unusual in that it is a mammal that lays eggs. It shares this distinction with the platypus. Both are native to Australia.
9. ERICH RONSO is a burly gent And now he's becoming quite rare He's fooled everyone with the horn on his head Because it's not horn - it's hair

Answer: Rhinoceros

All species of rhinoceros are endangered. The rhino's horn is actually compressed hair and highly prized as an ingredient in anti-fever medication, making the animal a prime target for poachers.
10. ROY MADDER here - I've come to say For my workplace I'm very well bred I can close my nose, I have broad flat feet And for days I don't need to be fed

Answer: Dromedary

The dromedary or one humped camel is native to North Africa and the Middle East. Remarkably adapted to life in the desert, the camel can close its nose during sandstorms. Broad flat feet also help traverse the sand. The camel can go for long periods without food and water.

It is the only mammal with oval blood cells - allowing them to expand without rupturing when the camel drinks large amounts of water.
