Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the term used for psittacosis in birds other than parrots?

Answer: ornithosis

Ornithosis/Psittacosis is a disease transmissable from birds to humans or vice versa.
2. Which of these birds is supposedly the "newest" in terms of evolutionary standards?

Answer: Nutcrackers

The Corvidae, or crow family, is considered to be the the highest in evolution when it comes to birds, being extremely intelligent and curious. This family includes crows, ravens, jackdaws, rooks, magpies, jays, and nutcrackers.
3. What is another name for the blue-throated macaw?

Answer: caninde

Its Latin name is Ara caninde. This bird is uncommon and you'll probably find it more often named as the "caninde"
4. What is a Catalina macaw?

Answer: A hybrid between a scarlet and a blue-and-gold

Catalinas are beautiful. Since they're hybrids, they don't have a "fixed" color pattern and are variegated with yellows, blues, reds, greens, and other colors.
5. What is the maximum lifespan of the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus)?

Answer: 72+ yrs

Other long lived birds are the great eagle-owl (68+), blue-and-gold macaw (64), ostrich (62.5), and bataleur eagle (55).
6. How many toes does an ostrich have on each foot?

Answer: 2

7. Which bird doesn't belong?

Answer: Leadbeater's

The Leadbeater's is a type of cockatoo. All the others are types of Poicephalus parrots.
8. What is a lanner?

Answer: a type of falcon

9. Which of these birds belongs in the Podicipedidae?

Answer: grebe

The grebe's relative is the flamingo (Phoenicopteridae). For quite a while, grebes were considered to be a type of duck.
10. True or false- Some vultures are merely short-legged storks?

Answer: True

It's true! Ever noticed how similar a wood stork and a black vulture can look? The New World vultures (Turkey, black, California condor) were genetically proven to really be short-legged storks with only a slight resemblance to true raptors. For example- The majority of vultures (with the exception of the lappet-faced) cannot rip open a carcass, unlike an eagle or a hawk.
11. In falconry, is the male or the female falcon called a "falcon" as opposed to a "tiercel"?

Answer: Female

The larger and stronger female is preferred to hunt with. "Tiercel" means "third" as the male is roughly 2 thirds of a large female's size.
12. What sound will Canada geese within close range of each other make?

Answer: Quiet "moo, moop, moop" sounds

They do this to keep in touch of each other.
13. What is smarter, the goose or the owl?

Answer: Goose

Geese may look slow, but they are quite intelligent.
14. True or false: A pigeon can tell the difference between a van Gogh and a Chagall and they can prove it.

Answer: True

Just goes to show how smart birds really are! I know some PEOPLE who can't even do that!
The experiment was conducted by a Japanese research team; Shigeru Watanabe, Junko Sakamoto, and Masumi Wakita. The pigeons were trained by viewing paintings by van Gogh and Chagall for about a month. They were rewarded when pecking at a van Gogh, and received nothing when pecking at the latter artist's paintings. They could even discriminate in black in white at about 90% accuracy. Later on, the birds were also shown paintings by the artists that they had never seen before- 85% of the time.
15. Yes or no: A peacock's exquisite tail feathers are really specialized back feathers?

Answer: Yes

A peacock's REAl tail is brown and stiff. That's what holds the coverts up.
