Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which group of animals includes sea lions and seals?

Answer: Pinnipeds

Pinnipeds means pin footed and the only other animal in this group is the walrus. They are called this because they use their flippers like feet to walk on land.
2. What are the young of sealions and seals called?

Answer: Pups

Sealions and seals usually give birth to just one pup. True seal pups (those with fur) have to stay on land for the first few months until their waterproof fur has grown.
3. Seals and sealions prefer cool conditions.

Answer: True

They prefer cool nutrient rich waters with a temperature of under 20 degrees. Seals most often live in the Arctic ocean or off the coast of Antarctica. They like to make their homes on ice. Sealions and fur seals inhabit the northern Pacific and also live off the coasts of Australia, Africa and South America.
4. What is the largest species of seal?

Answer: Southern Elephant Seal

Male southern elephant seals can weigh up to 8,500lbs and the females weigh up to 2,000 lbs. The males are twice as long as the females and have a trunk like protuberance on their faces. This accounts for their name.
5. Which animal is the greatest predator of seals?

Answer: Man

Seals have been hunted exhaustively for their fur, meat and blubber. The Caribbean monk seal has been hunted to extinction. It is now internationally illegal to hunt pinnipeds, but illegal poaching still occurs.
6. Seals are noisier animals than sealions.

Answer: False

Sea lions constantly call to each other in loud squawks. Seals, on the other hand, just use low volume grunts to communicate.
7. Which is the largest type of sealion?

Answer: Steller

Steller sealions live in the North Pacific Ocean. They are declining in numbers and researchers have not yet been able to discover the reason for this.
8. For how long can seals stay underwater?

Answer: Up to two hours

Seals can dive for long periods because they have extra haemoglobin in their blood and myoglobin in their muscles. Both of these substances are oxygen carrying compounds so they can keep on swimming under water for much longer than you or I, without needing to come up for oxygen.
9. How deep can a sealion dive in pursuit of food?

Answer: Uo to 600 feet

Sealions can dive up to 600 feet and can stay under water for up to forty minutes before they need to come up for air. They can do this by closing their nostrils as they enter the water and not opening them again until they need to breathe.
10. What kind of food do seals and sealions usually eat?

Answer: Fish

Both seals and sealions like to eat fish with the occasional squid, lobster or octopus. However, leopard seals are known to eat penguins or smaller seals.
