Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fractured Words: Say the words out loud and guess the language. Error Big

Answer: Arabic

Dubai belongs to the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is made up of seven emirates and Dubai is the capital of the Emirate of Dubai. Arabic is the national language of the UAE.
2. Missing word: What word goes before each of these? - Gulf, - cat, - carpet

Answer: Persian

Dubai is located on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula and borders the Persian Gulf. The Persian Gulf is an extension of the Arabian sea and was a site of the 1980s Iran-Iraq War.

Persia itself is the former name of the country of Iran.
3. Homophone: Words that sound alike. This geographical feature sounds a bit like a sweet meal course.

Answer: Desert

Dubai lies within the Arabian desert that covers most of the Arabian peninsula. It is Asia's largest desert stretching from Yemen to Iraq. The Empty Quarter found within it is considered one of the largest continuous bodies of sand in the world.
4. Anagram: Rearrange the capitalized letters to form one of Dubai's neighbours. The pilot let out a MOAN of frustration when the flight had to be diverted due to a sandstorm.

Answer: Oman

The UAE shares land borders with Oman and Saudi Arabia, and maritime borders with Qatar and Iran. The Emirate of Dubai borders Oman to the southeast.
5. Missing vowels: Fill in vowels appropriately to get legal tender. DRHM

Answer: Dirham

The UAE Dirham is also known as the Emirati Dirham. The word dirham derives from the Greek word drachma. Interestingly, prior to 1966 all the seven emirates that later formed the UAE, used the Gulf Rupee as their currency. The Gulf Rupee was pegged to the Indian Rupee at parity.

In June 1966, India devalued the Gulf Rupee, a move that was rejected by the emirates. Instead each emirate opted to adopt various currencies used by the neighbouring Middle Eastern countries.
6. Rebus: Combine synonyms to form a geographical feature of the emirate. Short laughter + Pitcher

Answer: Hajar

Ha + Jar

The Hajar Mountains are located along the border of Dubai and Oman. Hajar translates to stone or rock in Arabic. In Oman, they are also known as the Al-Hajar mountains or Oman mountains. They form the highest mountain range in the eastern Arabian peninsula.
7. Wordwise: Say what you see and you may get a traditional sport. FALC RY

Answer: Falconry

FALC on RY

Falconry was earlier practiced as a form of hunting by the Bedouins who lived in the UAE region. This practice dates back to over 4,000 years. Given the strong links of falconry to the Emirati heritage, it is now preserved and honoured as a traditional sport.
8. Cryptic: Guess the answer from the cryptic clue. Initially, only in limited areas drilling was allowed.

Answer: Oil

While oil is not a significant contributor to the economy of Dubai in particular these days, it was instrumental in the development of the city and the UAE, as is the case with most countries in the Middle East. The UAE as a whole has the sixth largest oil reserves in the world.

The word initially in the clue is a hint to take the first letters of subsequent words to spell out the answer.
9. Add a Letter: Add a letter to the word indicated by the clue and anagram to get the answer. S + Post

Answer: Islam

S + Mail = Islam

Islam is the official religion of the UAE. Majority of the country's mosques are controlled by the government who direct the appointment of imams (teachers). Since Islam prohibits the consumption of alcohol, sale of alcohol while allowed, is closely managed.
10. Hidden words: Find the answer hidden in the sentence below. Ahmed wondered how the architects had designed the building to resemble a traditional boat.

Answer: Dhow

...wondereD HOW...

The dhow is a traditional sailing boat used in many parts of Asia and Africa, including Dubai. Even today, colourful dhows belonging to local fishermen are seen along the coast of Dubai.

The Burj Al Arab is a luxury hotel located in Dubai. It is designed in the shape of the dhow's sail, a tribute to the tradition of the region. Built on an artificial island off the coast of Jumeirah Beach, it is one of the tallest hotels in the world.
