Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister from 1979-1990, succeeding James Callaghan. She won three general elections, however her poll tax policy proved to be her undoing and she was challenged for the leadership of the Conservative party. She withdrew prior to the second round of voting and was succeeded by John Major.
